Monochrome Films in the Classroom : An Investigation of Black-and-white films in Swedish Junior High SchoolsIvansson, Dennis January 2014 (has links)
The focus of this essay is to investigate if old monochrome films can be beneficial to use in the classroom. The aim is to research how (if at all) old monochrome films can affect students’ possibilities of learning from film. To investigate this matter, three fields will be of interest: First, how students respond to films according to ideas of identity; secondly, how films teach students about history; third and finally, qualities of monochrome films and how students might understand and relate to them. The findings in this essay suggest that old monochrome films are viable to use in the classroom, as they can teach students about history and previous cultures by being created in history themselves. The essay also suggests that old black-and-white films and newer films are quite similar, suggesting that monochrome films are just as adequate material to use in the classroom as newer films.

Bien avant de pouvoir saisir le monde en couleurs, les photographes se sont, pendant un certain temps, employés à le capturer, dans sa réalité formelle et lumineuse en Noir & Blanc. Néanmoins, depuis les balbutiements de la photographie dans les années 1820, et au vu de ses avancées depuis, certains professionnels ou amateurs n’ont pas pour autant cessé d’utiliser le Noir & Blanc. Aujourd’hui encore, à l’ère du souffle numérique qui boit la couleur du monde sans modération, beaucoup de praticiens continuent à présenter des photographies monochromes. Ainsi, alors que la tendance est effectivement au réalisme de la couleur et que les moyens technologiques ne proposent plus que cela, pourquoi observe-t-on encore de nos jours une permanence du noir et blanc dans la photographie ? Notre thèse espère donc produire une synthèse sur cette question, forte d’une bibliographie sur le Noir & Blanc, et d’axes d’analyses et de théorisations bénéficiant d’une approche pluridisciplinaire, à la croisée des sciences de l’art et de l’image, de l’esthétique et de l’histoire de l’art. Elle bénéficiera également, des travaux pionniers des penseurs et spécialistes de la photographie tel que W. BENJAMIN, R. BATHES, S. SONTAG qui ont eu le mérite de débroussailler l’univers foisonnant de la photographie, avec des concepts opérants, éventuellement réaménagés pour la question spécifique du Noir & Blanc. / Long before being able to seize the world in color, photographers have worked, for a certain time, to catch it in its luminous formal Black and White reality. Nevertheless, since photography's early stages in the 1820s, and in view of its advances since then, some professionals or amateurs never stopped using Black and White. Even today, in the digital age which drinks world's colors without moderation, a lot of photographers still show monochrome photos. So, whereas color realism is very trendy and technological devices only offer this, why can we still observe a Black and White perennity in photography ? This thesis wants to produce a synthesis on this query, with a strong Black and White bibliography, and analysis axes and theorizations benefiting from a multidisciplinary approach, between art and picture sciences, aesthetic and art history. It also benefit from pioneering work of thinkers and photography specialists as W. BENJAMIN, R. BARTHES and S. SONTAG, who have the virtue to clear the photography abundant universe with effective concept, eventually reorganized for the specific Black and White question.

Racial and Geographic Differences among Callers to the Georgia Tobacco Quit Line, October, 2005- April, 2007Majeed, Ban A 14 November 2008 (has links)
The majority of smokers - regardless of race - wish to quit. Quitting tobacco use is a top national priority to improve the quality of life for all people. There is a wide range of effective tobacco addiction treatment strategies. Telephone counseling services or Tobacco Quit Lines (TQL) is one of the effective smoking cessation aids available to all people in the U.S. free of charge. This is a cross sectional analysis of data from Georgia Tobacco Quit Line (TQL). The study examined the differences in the utilization rates of the Georgia TQL by different smoking population. Analysis revealed that 2.9 per 1000 male smokers in Georgia called the TQL compared to 5.0 per 1000 females. Also, the rate of calling among black was significantly higher than that among white smokers. Television commercials promoting the use of the TQL were successful in reaching the Black smokers.

In 1948 and 1949, three doctoral students in sociology and anthropology conducted ethnographic fieldwork in York, SC (called Kent), a mill town. Through interviews, white town elites, black mill workers, and white mill workers revealed their lives to the scholars. What resulted were three remarkable studies on southern town life in the immediate post World War II period. Although segregation had begun to weaken in the face of postwar socioecomic change, it still held whites and blacks in its grip. The “thick description” of community life provided by the ethnographic interviews, as well as the authors’ analysis of life in York, makes these three books invaluable still to scholars of the history and sociology of the South.
