Vzdušná síla v současné strategii / Position of Airpower in Contemporary Strategy

Černý, Tomáš January 2013 (has links)
This thesis deals with the current role of airpower in contemporary warfare. In last 100 years, the aircraft became an indisputable part of today's armed conflict. The aim of this work is to determine the mechanics behind airpower's functions in conflicts and to critically assess airpower's performance. The analyzed conflicts - Persian Gulf 1991, Kosovo 1999, Afghanistan 2001 and U. S.-led counterinsurgency campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan - provide the diversity that is needed to reveal the position of airpower in contemporary strategy. The thesis is divided in three parts. The first part follows the evolution of airpower and its theory, providing context to further analysis of contemporary environment. The second part of the thesis identifies key theoretical concepts and modalities connected to airpower and analysis them on a general, theoretical basis. The third part of this thesis applies the concepts and modalities on the picked case studies in order to reach the suggested objectives by analyzing the conflicts and deriving empirical data. The conclusions of the thesis suggest that while slightly exaggerated, airpower grew to vital importance and became one of the key elements in today's conflicts.

Rakousko-uherské aktivity v Číně, 1894-1914 / Austro-Hungarian Activities in China, 1894-1914.

Kočvar, Jan January 2012 (has links)
Austro-Hungarian Activities in China, 1894-1914 PhDr. Jan Kočvar My Ph.D. thesis evaluates Austro-Hungarian activities in China between 1894 and 1914, especially their political aspects. I would like to explain the nature of Austro-Hungarian contacts with China and their significance for the Dual Monarchy. The main source for my thesis was constituted by the materials in Haus-, Hof- und Staatsarchiv in Vienna. Austria-Hungary concluded diplomatic relations with China in 1869, but her position in China remained weak. After the Sino-Japanese War, the Far East became a focus of interest of the Great Powers, and in 1896 was appointed the first Austro-Hungarian Minister to China. During the Scramble for Concessions in late nineties, Austro-Hungarian navy conducted survey of Chinese littoral and contemplated an establishment of a naval base in China, but finally rejected this idea. Austro-Hungarian trade and other interests in China were too insignificant to justify such an action. The peak of Austro-Hungarian presence is connected with the Boxer Uprising of 1900. Austria-Hungary didn't contribute to its genesis. During the uprising, Austro-Hungarian sailors were fighting in besieged Legation Quarter in Beijing, as well as in the metropolitan province of Zhili. Thereafter, Austro-Hungarian diplomacy took...

Obraz třídního nepřítele v 1. polovině 50. let 20. století / Presentation of the regime enemy in 1950s.

Hykešová, Marie January 2014 (has links)
1 ABSTRACT The main aim of my diploma work is to show the representation of the class fighting and the class enemy presented to inhabitants of the Czech Repub- lic in the first half of 1950's, particularly during the period of Stalinism. This reflection of the class fighting and the class enemy is a consequence of reading newspaper and poetry published in the defined period. This period is characterized by bipolar dividing of the world in two blocs: socialist and capitalist that declared different contradictory ideologies. This di- viding resulted from the Cold War and both blocs were mutually competing for the final victory of one regime. Socialist bloc described rivalrous capitalist bloc in an unsightly manner and it was knowingly spreading fear of its enemies either coming from the capitalist bloc or at least co-operating with it. So my work demonstrates describing the enemies of socialism and work- ing class and also features that were attributed and ascribed to them. The con- trast between these two blocs were often used for this description. The socialist bloc was the sphere of welfare and progress while the capitalist bloc was the sphere of evil and decay. There are also narrator's memories of the 1950's to sketch in the atmos- phere of the defined period. Selected narrators recall their lives in...

Řeka klidná, řeka divoká: Etnografický výzkum kolem řeky Otavy / Calm and wild river; An etnography study around the Otava river

Mottlová, Tereza January 2021 (has links)
In this diploma thesis I wanted to find out how people who live in a close relationship with the river deal with the extremes like are floods and drought. I wondered if local settlers and the city administration identified the threat of flood differently from people who did not live in contact with the river, and if their relationship with the river could be useful for others. I tried to find out if and how the locals reflect climate change through their lived experiences with floods and droughts. During my six-month research, based on ethnographic methods I spent time with gardeners who have been critically affected by drought in recent years, with settlers who regularly experience floods and with representatives of the city administration. Thanks to ethnography, I was able to understand the context of the relationships I studied. I found out that living in contact with floods is not as dramatic as it may seem to an observer. Thanks to many years od experience with floods and the river have the locals developed local knowledge, that can be very useful for whole city; If the city administration can combine expert and local knowledge, solving potential problems with high water can become much more effective and proportionate to reality. People living under the threat of floods do not need to be seen...

"Lepší Rudý než mrtvý!": Boj Amerických Indiánů za právo na svrchovanost v 60. a 70. letech 20. století / "Better Red than Dead": American Indians' Struggle for Sovereignty Rights in the 1960s and 1970s

Staňková, Olga January 2014 (has links)
In my thesis, I argue that the Native American activism of the 1960s and 1970s does not fall into the category of Civil Rights Movement because of its significantly different goals, and that the fundamentally different character of sovereignty rights also keeps the Indian struggle invisible in American understandings of U.S. political and social history. According to my analysis, the terms tribal sovereignty, self-determination, and treaty rights describe the ultimate goals of the Native American activists in the 1960s and 1970s the best. The decade between 1964 and 1974 witnessed the rise of radical Indian activism, which succeeded in reminding the general public and politicians that Indians are still present in the United States. Furthermore, it influenced a whole generation of Native Americans who found new pride in being Indian. However, this current of American activism is not known so well by the general U.S. public. This thesis will describe this state as "selective visibility" deriving from U.S. selective historical memory, only noticing and remembering those events and images concerning Native Americans that can be simply understood, somehow relate to the U.S. set of values, and fit in the national historical narrative.

Češi a Němci na Poličsku ve 20. století: regionální sonda do česko-německého soužití na území národnostně smíšeného okresu Polička / Czechs and Germans in the Polička's Region in the 20th Century: Regional Probe Into Czech-German Coexistence in the Ethnically Mixed District of Polička

Najbert, Jaroslav January 2011 (has links)
Using a method of regional probing, the diploma work seeks to map the evolution of relations between the Czech majority and the German minority that resided in the former political district of Policka. The analysis concentrates on the period of 1897-1946, with a concentration focusing on the culture of "remembering" and the ways in which both ethnic groups came to divergent interpretations of their mutually-shared history. The author strives to identify the factors that influneced the actions and positions of the local populace during the key political events of 1918, 1938 and 1945. He concentrates not only on the everday interactions between both ethnic groups, but also on the conditions that both groups found themelves in during the so-called "National Confrontation."
