The closure of Brandon Mental Health Centre: a case study and ten-year follow-up of individuals discharged from 1990-1998

Carr, Rachel 28 August 2012 (has links)
During the last 50 years, there has been a transfer of care for individuals living with mental disorders from predominately institutional settings to predominately community settings. The purpose of this research was to document the closure of Brandon Mental Health Centre (BMHC) and to look at long-term outcomes for discharged individuals. These objectives were met by interviewing key people involved in the closure and through analysis of administrative data. To support individuals after BMHC closed, new services were developed in four priority areas: adult inpatient and crisis response services, adult rehabilitation and consumer support services, psychogeriatric services, and child and adolescent services. Visits to a general practitioner for a mental disorder by individuals discharged from BMHC decreased significantly over the follow-up period while visits to a psychiatrist increased significantly. Mortality rates, physician visits, and hospital admissions were higher in former BMHC residents than in a matched cohort.

Improving America's Racial Climate by Decreasing the Use of the Race Card

Brown, Brandon 01 January 2012 (has links)
The goal of this paper is to explore the way the Race Card is used in the United States and how its use affects the racial climate of the country. The use of the Race Card in politics, courts, and sport is addressed. Research and examples show that the use of the Race Card in these areas has generally negative effects. In most cases the use of the Race Card in these areas not only reinforces stereotypes but also can racialize a situation, which can cause the actual issue to be ignored. Therefore, in order to improve America’s racial climate and ensure the root of issues are being addressed it is important to limit the use of the Race Card to anti-discrimination issues courts.

The Elements of Home: Towards Community and Privacy

Davis, Christopher Brandon 08 May 1999 (has links)
Today we live in a society where almost everything is or has been reduced to the quantitative state of being a commodity of some kind. We find ourselves searching for something within architecture that is not necessarily tangible or quantifiable. Searching for something more implicit to human experience This thesis is an attempt to explore and document the fundamental idea of dwelling. / Master of Architecture

Predictors of presence in virtual reality

Sollins, Brandon 01 May 2011 (has links)
The subjective experience of presence is considered to be important in the treatment of anxiety disorders using virtual reality. Presence can be defined as a psychological phenomenon through which one's cognitive processes are oriented towards another world. Most of the research on presence has focused on the roles of technological factors influencing presence, while the number of studies focusing on the personality and physiological predictors are far fewer. Thus, the present study examined the relationship between various personality variables and presence, along with physiological correlates of presence when engaged in a virtual environment. The Presence Questionnaire, to determine their experience of presence, and a small battery of personality-related questionnaires were administered to 70 young adults who participated in 3 different virtual reality scenarios. Participants' physiological responses were recorded in the form of heart rate, galvanic skin levels, and galvanic skin responses were assessed as were urges to drink (craving). Data analysis showed that expectations, levels of craving, and drinking history played a significant role in the experience of presence.

Take me to the river: an exploration of bringing the dead home

Tustin, Michelle 15 April 2016 (has links)
In contemporary North America, death is often responded to by means of geographical and social separation. Formally removed from the everyday lifeworld and boundaries of home and community, the cemetery landscape has depreciated greatly in its cultural significance and visible taking care. As changing death practices and perceptions towards mortality look to reintegrate the dead back into the living community, traditional ways of locating, memorializing and ritualizing the dead no longer reflect or express the meaning of death held by modern cultural ideals. This research looks to investigate how landscape architecture may re-imagine the cemetery landscape providing newfound cultural significance and presence within the modern everyday lifeworld. In the City of Brandon, Manitoba, the limited interment capacity of the current Municipal cemetery has established a need for expanded cemetery space. This practicum proposes rather, to relocate the cemetery within a place of meaningful significance to the community of Brandon. The design responds to the shifting ideals, and patterns of disposal and ritualization emerging within present western society. / May 2016

Värdegrundsarbete på fritidshemmet : En kvalitativ intervjustudie om fritidspedagogers arbete med värdegrundsarbetet / Developing a values system in after-school care education : A qualitative study of after school care teachers' work with fundamental values

Lane, Brandon January 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to gain a clearer picture of how after-school-care teachers’ work with fundamental values in after-school care, both practically and theoretically based on the curriculum Lgr 11. I wanted to acquire a broader understanding of the school's core values and what kinds of tools teachers used to cope with their task. I proceeded with two questions: How does after-school care proactively work with core values based on gender, ethnicity and class? How does the work on value issues at after-school care centers compare with Lgr 11? In my study, I used literature studies and a qualitative analysis of five interviews with afterschool care teachers. I came to the conclusion that the fundamental values were difficult to interpret and that the majority of the interviewed after-school care teachers adapted the core values after the schools "needs".
