The Maputaland Coastal Plain in Kwa Zulu-Natal is covered by aeolian sands . According to the
national wetland delineation manual delineating wetlands in this area is complex due to
problematic wetland soils. The aim of this study was to classify and describe the vegetation of
the different zones of the wetland systems to determine the main drivers of the plant
communities. The understanding of these complex ecosystems could assist in wetland
delineation. Twenty wetlands from five wetland systems were surveyed. The vegetation zones
of each wetland were sampled and basic environmental data were collected.
The results from this study indicate that different plant species assemblages are characteristic
for the wetland zones. However, zone delineation using vegetation composition varies between
the different wetland systems, and should be evaluated according to the system in question.
The major determinants of the vegetation communities in wetlands on the MCP are the

A plant ecological study and management plan for Mogale's Gate Biodiversity Centre, GautengTuckett, Alistair Sean 12 1900 (has links)
The Mogale’s Gate Biodiversity Centre is a 3 060 ha reserve located within the Gauteng
province. The area comprises grassland with woodland patches in valleys and lower-lying
areas. To develop a scientifically based management plan a detailed vegetation study was
undertaken to identify and describe the different ecosystems present. From a TWINSPAN
classification twelve plant communities, which can be grouped into nine major communities,
were identified. A classification and description of the plant communities, as well as, a
management plan are presented. The area comprises 80% grassland and 20% woodland
with 109 different plant families. The centre has a grazing capacity of 5.7 ha/LSU with a
moderate to good veld condition. From the results of this study it is clear that the area makes
a significant contribution towards carbon storage with a total of 0.520 tC/ha/yr stored in all

Doornrandje 386 JR, which are being incorporated into Gauteng Department of
Agriculture and Rural Development’s protected area expansion. This study provides

The vegetation of the Nooitgedacht section of the Loskop Dam Nature Reserve resembles
Bankenveld vegetation and differs from the other areas of the reserve. This study was
undertaken to identify, classify, and describe the plant communities present on this section,
and to determine their veld condition. The Braun-Blanquet approach was followed to classify
the different plant communities. A total number of 170 sample plots (100m2) were placed in
all homogeneous vegetation units in a randomly stratified basis. The Ecological Index
Method (EIM) was used to determine the veld condition. Data were collected using the steppoint
method and incorporated into the GRAZE model from where the veld condition was
calculated. A minimum of 400 step points were surveyed in each community with more
points in the larger communities. Plant community data was analysed using the JUICE
software program. A total of 11 plant communities were identified. The overall veld condition

The Blyde Canyon Nature reserve displays its natural beauty for most National and International visitors all over the World.
The region is renowned for its high rainfall and misty weather, which enhances the natural beauty of the area.
Because of the mist belt effect, the area is one of the largest commercial forestry areas in South Africa. Baboons also seek after the topography and vegetation type (Northeastern mountain sourveld) that is typical of this area and numerous baboon troops occur in this region. This combination is often the cause of conflict between baboons and humans.
The need arise for these baboons to be studied and managed as a component of this very important ecosystem.
The main aims of the study were firstly to identify a natural ranging baboon troop, to habituate them and gather data regarding home range sizes, troop sizes, densities and seasonal food selection and secondly to give a detailed habitat description and vegetation map of the troop's home range.
The baboon activity data was collected in 15-minute intervals over a one year period on a troop at Bourke's Luck. This included all activities such as walking, social, foraging, and resting. The food parts selected as well as the species foraged on was identified. Numerous statistical methods were used on the baboon data such as; the Shapiro Wilk test, Spearman rank-order correlation, ANOVA, and the Kolmogarov-Smirnov two sample test.
There was a positive correlation between home range areas and troop sizes and the baboons preferred certain habitats above others during different seasons.
To give a detailed habitat description of the troop's home range, 50 sample plots was stratified-randomly distributed in order to include all the different stratification units. a TWINSPAN classification, refined by Braun-Blanquet procedures was carried out on the Bourke's Luck section that included the baboons home range. 13 Plant communities, which can be grouped into 7 major community types were identified.

Behavioral-ecology of the white rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum) in the Willem Pretorius Game ReserveJordaan, Hermanus Lukas 06 1900 (has links)
The main aim of this study was to classify and describe the plant communities in the home range of
white rhinoceros in order to understand the animal seasonal foraging ecology. To provide a detailed
habitat description, forty sample plots were stratified randomly. A TWINSPAN classification,
refined by Braun-Blanquet procedures, was carried out on the Viewpoint section of the reserve. Ten
plant communities, grouped into five major community types, were identified. The veld condition
and ecological carrying capacity in these communities were measured, stating an abundance of food
on long grass while the short grass equal the number of short grass feeders. A number of behavioural
aspects such as activity data, home range utilization and dietary usage were examined. Statistical
methods such as the Spearman rank-order correlation, Wilcoxon sign test and Student T-test were
used on rhino data. The difference in usage of the home range during wet and dry seasons was

Vegetation ecology of Drakensberg foothill moist grassland on Hlogoma Mountain, Underberg, KwaZulu-NatalBerruti, Sharron Marion 11 1900 (has links)
Hlogoma Mountain is a small inselberg surrounded by farms and commercial forestry in the Underberg district (KwaZulu-Natal) within the Gs10 Drakensberg Foothill Moist Grassland. As little is known about the vegetation on Hlogoma, a survey was undertaken to classify, map and describe the plant communities occurring on the inselberg. A total of 100 (16 m2) randomly stratified sample plots were placed in homogeneous vegetation units within the 117 ha study area. A TWINSPAN classification, refined by Braun-Blanquet procedures, resulted in the identification of two major communities, five communities, 12 sub-communities and four variants. All communities were described and a vegetation map constructed. Ordinations identified key environmental variables that have an impact on the vegetation at the study site. A plant species checklist was created and analysed for floristic composition; rarity and threatened species; medicinal plants; endemism; phenology; flower colour and elevation range; species richness and plant community biodiversity. A total of 467 species were identified, represented by 271 genera and 87 families. Four Red Data species and a new Aspidoglossum species were discovered. Two near-endemic genera, two endemic species and 88 near-endemic species belonging to the Drakensberg Alpine Centre were found on Hlogoma. This study showed that Hlogoma Mountain is an inselberg with high plant species richness and endemism, and is a refuge of conservation importance for biodiversity. / Environmental Sciences / M.
