Please note: creative writing theses are permanently embargoed in OpenBU. No public access is forecasted for these. To request private access, please click on the lock icon and filled out the appropriate web form. / BEASTS is a character driven play that explores the chaos of American womanhood through the dark underbelly of a relationship between Fran, a pregnant suburbanite and her older sister Judy, an irreverent artist with a propensity for disruption. When Judy hears that Fran’s husband, Jim is on a business trip she decides to pay Fran a visit. The friction between these siblings is palpable and continues to intensify as Judy unearths confounding secrets and infringes upon the relationship that Fran has with her Doula, Amelia, an elitist earth mama who’s been Fran’s only female friend since relocating back East. The world of the play begins in realism and ends in magical realism; as their environment starts to mirror the anarchy of their psychological labyrinthine world: a giant tree falls in the middle of the living room, the walls of the house cave in, raging wolves howl in the distance. Form and logic disintegrate into another realm as Fran and Judy unwittingly fight through pain to arrive at a moment of love which is devitalized when Jim returns home. / 2999-01-01T00:00:00Z

Cissokho, Malick 28 May 2010 (has links) (PDF)

Change of whole-tree transpiration of mature Hevea brasiliensis under soil and atmospheric droughts: analyze in intermittent and seasonal droughts under the framework of the hydraulic limitation hypothesis

Isarangkool Na Ayutthaya, Supat 05 July 2010 (has links) (PDF)

Defending luck egalitarianism

Barry, Nicholas January 2007 (has links)
[Truncated abstract] In this thesis, I seek to determine whether luck egalitarianism is a compelling interpretation of egalitarian justice. In answering this question, I challenge existing interpretations and criticisms of luck egalitarianism, and highlight its radical consequences. I propose a revised theory of luck egalitarianism, and conclude that it does represent a compelling interpretation of egalitarian justice. In the first chapter, I trace the evolution of luck egalitarianism, highlighting the variety of theories that have been grouped under this label. In chapter 2, I defend the approach against an influential critique by Elizabeth Anderson, who argues that luck egalitarianism is inherently disrespectful, trapped in the distributive paradigm, and harsh in its approach towards the victims of bad option luck. I argue against these criticisms, pointing out that the harsh treatment problem will rarely arise because few inequalities result entirely from option luck, and that luck egalitarianism is not disrespectful to those it seeks to assist, nor trapped in the distributive paradigm. In chapter 3, I analyse the distinction between option luck and brute luck, which is crucial to luck egalitarianism. I argue that the option-brute distinction is inconsistent with the underlying impulse of luck egalitarianism because it allows morally arbitrary inequalities to go uncorrected and because it is insufficiently sensitive to the impact of background inequalities on individual choice. I propose a revised theory of luck egalitarianism that focuses on the extent to which a person's level of advantage has been genuinely chosen, rejecting the option-brute distinction. In chapter 4, I give a broader justification of this theory, analysing recent critiques by Susan Hurley and Samuel Scheffler, who have both questioned the moral foundations of luck egalitarianism. In chapter 5, I outline a conception of egalitarian advantage to work alongside the revised theory of luck egalitarianism. I support Cohen's claim that egalitarians should adopt a heterogeneous account of advantage, which includes resources, welfare, and midfare. ... In chapter 7, I highlight the counter-intuitive social policy applications of luck egalitarianism, arguing that the universal approach to social provision associated with the social democratic welfare state comes closer to achieving luck-egalitarian objectives than the residual and conditional provision of benefits and services that is associated with the liberal welfare state. I conclude that luck egalitarianism, in the revised form I outline in chapter 3, is a compelling interpretation of egalitarian justice.

Les petites exploitations agricoles françaises / Small french farms

Lecole, Pauline 07 December 2017 (has links)
Small farms (identified by statistical services as farms with a standard output of less than 25000€) are relatively unknown and condemned to disappear by French and European agricultural modernization policies. In the 2010 agricultural census, 178 000 farms are counted as small farms, representing more than 36% of metropolitan French farms. In the first chapter, we present a statistical description of small farms in comparison with medium and large farms. Small farms are mostly run by elderly farmers with low levels of education/training who work half-time on the farm and have little additional workforce. In the second chapter, we implement a typology of small farms using a mixed classification method. We obtain five different groups and deduce potential strategies developed by small farms. These strategies are partially confirmed by the study of different small farms trajectories between 2000 and 2010. We find farmers close to cessation of farming, as well as farmers in the setting-up stage and farmers who are not in a transition phase. This statistical analysis is completed in the third chapter by field surveys. The first survey is administered in less favored areas of the Baronnies of the Pyrénées, and the second one in the peri-urban area of Montpellier. These surveys are complemented by statistical data from the 2010 agricultural census to assess the environmental, social and economic contributions of small farms. The fourth chapter focuses on the Common Agricultural Policy. With the enlargement of the EU, small farms found a place in political discourse. We suggest ways of adapting the 2014-2020 CAP support schemes to small farms. We study the Small Farms Scheme and its advantages as a simplified scheme involving an unconditional flat-rate. We then review measures to favour employment in small farms and measures to facilitate setting-up and access to agricultural land.

Mapeamento de QTLs para teor de proteína em feijoeirocomum (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) / Mapping QTLs for protein content in common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)

LEÃO, Ariane Castro Mendes 15 December 2006 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2014-07-29T15:16:27Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 Ariane_Castro_Mendes_Leao[1].pdf: 899082 bytes, checksum: 0b19f24baa0e56f0caae9f29a959bb7a (MD5) Previous issue date: 2006-12-15 / The common bean besides being one of the basic meals of brazilian´s population, it is one of the main products that provide protein in the nutritional diet from the society share which is economically less favorable. The identification of molecular markers linked to controlling genes of the protein content in common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is a very important tool to help breeding programs, raising the efficiency and agility. This way, this work was made with two main goals: a) to map SSR and RAPD markers linked to loci (QTLs) that control protein content in two generations of a segregating population of common beans and b) to compare detection procedures of markers linked to QTLs using the ANOVA method and the process of interval mapping. For that reason, 94 families were taken from the F2 generation and 90 families from the F2:3 generation derived from the cross of genitors CNFC 7812 e CNFC 8056. Results indicated that there is the possibility of identifying molecular markers related to protein content in common beans, utilizing both detection procedures. The ANOVA method identified a greater number of QTLslinked markers than the process of interval mapping in both generations. There was coincidence between the identified loci obtained with the two methods for each generation. Loci that were associated with protein content were different for the F2 and F2:3 generations. However, there was a stable detection of a genomic region of the linkage group 4, indicating a possible role of this region of the common bean genome in the control of seed protein content. The proportion of the trait s phenotypic variation explained by QTLs varied from 5,5% to 9,5%, considering both generation.

Útok hrubou silou na přístupový systém s pomocí syntetických otisků prstů / Brute Force Attack on Access System Using Synthetic Fingerprints

Polehňa, Dominik January 2020 (has links)
The work deals with the resistance of the VeriFinger comparison algorithm to synthetic fingerprints. The basics of fingerprints, comparison algorithms and synthetic fingerprint generators are gradually analyzed. In total, three experiments were designed to test the resistance of the algorithm using synthetic fingerprints. An application using the VeriFinger algorithm was implemented to evaluate individual experiments. A total of 2 800 000 synthetic fingerprints were generated across all experiments. The first experiment showed that random fingerprint generation was not effective for real fingerprints, but was somewhat sufficient for synthetic fingerprints. The second experiment proved that comparison and the comparison score could be used to estimate the class of the identified fingerprint, and in the third experiment, by narrowing the generation to one class, it raised the total number of matched fingerprints. The results of individual experiments were written and their possible extension was suggested.

Metody ukládání uživatelských hesel v operačních systémech / Password deposition techniques in operating systems

Pavlík, Martin January 2009 (has links)
This master thesis deals with ways to store passwords in current operating systems. Specifically, this work focuses on Windows, Linux, BSD and OS X. These systems are examined for ways of hashing passwords and on resistance of resulting hashes against various attacks. First (theoretical) section describes the procedures and algorithms that are needed for user authentication. This part also describes methods of hash storing. At the end of the theoretical part are generally described some possible attacks against hash functions. In second (practical) part is described and tested tools for obtaining hashes of the investigated operating systems. Subsequently practical attacks were conducted against obtained hashes by using appropriate tools. Furthermore there are presented results of the attacks. In the conclusion of the work there is a comparison of tools and methods which were used to obtain plaintext passwords from operating systems.
