The stiffness properties of a short narrow rectangular beam as modified by a primary bending moment and shear stress distribution in the major plane are presented. The beam is a segment taken from a longer member the "structure." A distribution of bending stress is assumed over the beam segment length and its effect on the stiffness properties in lateral bending and torsion obtained. The stiffness matrix is used to obtain the critical value of load for a number of well known examples of narrow rectangular beams and the results are shown to be in good agreement. The results of an energy solution, which produces a symmetrical matrix, are presented. Comparison with classical examples shows accurate results with the added benefit that the symmetrical matrix lends itself much more readily to more complicated problems. / Applied Science, Faculty of / Civil Engineering, Department of / Graduate

This thesis presents a method for finding the lateral buckling load of a straight beam loaded perpendicular to its longitudinal axis with loads applied at any eccentricity. The beam can be restrained at any number of points along its length against deflections and rotations. The beam is divided into a number of segments and joints for which equations involving statics, elasticity, and continuity are written. The resulting group of nonlinear simultaneous equations is solved for several magnitudes of the loading pattern for which a buckling load is desired. A graph of the determinant of the structure matrix versus the load level yields the critical load. Included in the thesis is a complete listing of the computer program used in the solution technique. It was written for use on the IBM 7040 installation at the University of British Columbia. Included also are curves giving the lateral buckling stress of a beam simply supported at one end, and cantilevered over a flexible column at the other end, and whose top flange is laterally restrained. The beam carries a uniform load together with a concentrated load at the end of the cantilever. Elastic buckling solutions for thin-walled metal columns with perforation patterns

Presented are approximate finite strip methods for use in predicting elastic buckling strength of cold-formed steel columns. These methods were developed by examining elemental behavior of cross-sections in eigen-buckling analyses and validated using a large database of finite element rack-type columns with perforation patterns. The influence of perforations is accounted by reduced thicknesses related to the plate buckling coefficient and transverse web rotational stiffness in the prediction of local and distortional buckling respectively. Global buckling prediction including the influence of perforations uses critical elastic loads of an unperforated section multiplied by the ratio of weighted to gross cross-sectional moment of inertia for flexural buckling and the ratios of weighted to gross cross-sectional warping torsion constant and weighted to gross St. Venant torsional constant for flexural-torsional buckling. Concern for end-user was given and methods are presented in a way for incorporation into governing design standards.
