Previous issue date: 2010-10-20 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The present work aims the social-historical understanding of the Carlos Diegues movie Bye Bye Brazil, produced in 1979, from the axis of modernization in their historical particularities, namely a specific modernization which excluded the majority of accumulation processes. Thus the work verses about a period in which society has undergone changes in the life production - which led to changes in social relations, a fact that gives rise to key discussions that lead to understanding the paths taken by the Brazilian history. The research work looked toward the commencement of immanent analysis. We tried to capture the historicity of the film from the understanding of its interior, so that the issues which were addressed converged with our object (the modernization expression), such as the representation of Brazilian poverty, migration, national integration through the medias and the exacerbated glorification of foreign cultures. This analysis was marked by the understanding of determination and the social role of the movie. Thus, we tried to reflect on the universe of creation of the film, on the Carlos Diegues histories of life and artistics works, the production process of Bye Bye Brazil, the way it was seen, as well as its insertion in political and cultural debates that formed the environment in which the movie was produced. During the research it was found that Bye bye Brazil lends itself to laying bare the contradictions surrounding the modernization process under the aegis of the military dictatorship, which shows its intent: to put itself in favor of social awareness. We consider the understanding of these events, the social ground that inspired the author in which he sought to intervene, an important way to reflect and critically assess the Brazilian reality / Este trabalho objetiva a compreensão histórico-social da obra fílmica Bye bye Brasil, de Carlos Diegues, produzida em 1979, a partir do eixo da modernização, em suas particularidades históricas, a saber: uma específica modernização que excluía a maioria da população dos processos de acumulação.

Eudora Welty's Theatrical Sketches of 1948: Summer Diversion or Lost Potential? Bye-Bye Brevoort and Other SketchesGordon, Leslie H 15 December 2010 (has links)
Eudora Welty is well-known for her many works of fiction and non-fiction, but not known for her works for the theater. In the summer of 1948 Welty moved to New York and wrote, in collaboration with another writer, a musical revue entitled What Year Is This? Only one of the sketches, “Bye-Bye Brevoort,” was ever produced. This and other sketches in the unpublished manuscript deserve to be studied alongside Welty’s other work. These writings provide a window into her love of New York, her vast knowledge of the fine arts, and the evolution of her writing styles. In January of 2010, a reading was staged at the Balzer Theater at Herren’s, Atlanta, Georgia. Audience reaction indicates that these pieces, both songs and skits, deserve more attention.

"Die Mauer im Kopf": Aesthetic Resistance against West-German Take-OverPuteri, Arwen 17 March 2014 (has links)
Even 24 years after the Fall of the Berlin Wall, modern day Germans are still preoccupied with the contentious dynamics of the post-Wall unification process. Concern with geo-political fractiousness is deeply rooted in German history and the reason for Germany's desire to become a unified nation. The Fall of the Wall, and the subsequent rejection of socialism, was a chance to recover and unify what was perceived to be an "incomplete" nation. Yet, despite these actions, social unity between East and West Germans has never occurred and the Wall still persists as a metaphorical barrier in the minds of German citizens. Thus, the unification process should be critically evaluated so that the lingering (social) disunity between East and West Germans may be better understood and potentially remedied.
This thesis examines how two post-Wall films, Good Bye, Lenin! (2003) and Berlin is in Germany (2001) reveal patterns that explain the lingering disunity between East and West from an underrepresented lens: an East German perspective. I do so by investigating whether these films offer insights into the culture of the former GDR, which was ideologically, institutionally, and socio-economically divided from the West for over 40 years. This argument is supported by an analysis of how Good Bye, Lenin! and Berlin is in Germany confront the audience with a new (East German) hero who has to navigate a "foreign" terrain and is expected to adapt to and embrace this entirely new culture. Both films allude to the East German sentiment of longing for GDR culture and values as an attempt to maintain an East German identity while being threatened by overpowering "colonization" by the West.
