Examining Gender and Age as Predictors of Personal Development in a Summer Camp Setting as Mediated by Social Capital and Social Support

Youth require opportunities to master and demonstrate new skills, make independent choices, and form positive social relationships to encourage positive youth development. Camps provide a unique setting that fosters the development of new sources of social capital and social support. Current literature examining positive youth development in camps has been able to identify some demographic differences in camper experiences at camp, but has not yielded statistically significant relationships and no consensus as to the explanations for those relationships. Using a longitudinal dataset gathered in a camp setting, this study examined the relationships between gender and age and personal development. Social capital and social support were found to have significant roles as mediating variables in the development of personal development at camp. This study enhances the understanding of the benefits to children from attending camp, and why females and older children may benefit the most from these experiences.

Ore Petrology and Alteration of the West Ansil Volcanic-hosted Massive Sulphide Deposit of the Noranda Mining Camp, Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec

The West Ansil deposit was the first Cu discovery in 25 years in the Noranda Central Camp. It has a combined indicated and inferred resource of ~1.2 Mt. Grades for the indicated resource are 3.4% Cu, 0.4% Zn, 1.4 g/t Au and 9.2 g/t Ag. The bulk of the resource is located in three massive sulphide lenses (Upper, Middle and Lower) that are entirely within the Rusty Ridge Formation above the Lewis exhalite. The mineralization in all three ore lenses consists of massive pyrrhotite + chalcopyrite + magnetite. Semi-massive sphalerite is restricted to the upper and lower parts of the Middle lens. Massive magnetite occurs at the center of the Upper and Middle lenses, where it replaces massive pyrrhotite. A striking feature of West Ansil is the presence of abundant colloform and nodular pyrite (+marcasite) in the massive sulphides. Late-stage replacement of massive pyrrhotite by colloform pyrite and marcasite, occurs mostly along the upper and lower contacts of the lenses.

Camp Identities: Conrad Salinger and the Aesthetics of MGM Musicals

<p>This dissertation seeks to position the music of American arranger-orchestrator-composer Conrad Salinger (1901-62) as one of the key factors in creating the larger camp aesthetic movement in MGM film musicals of the 1940s and 1950s. The investigation primarily examines Salinger's arranging and orchestrating practices in transcriptions and conductor's scores of musical numbers from MGM films, though some scores from Broadway shows are also considered. Additionally, Salinger's style is frequently compared to other arrangers, so as to establish the unique qualities of his music that set it apart from his contemporaries from both a technical and an aesthetic standpoint and that made it desirable as an object of imitation. By inquiring into his musical practices' relationship to his subjectivity as a gay person in the era of "the closet," this analysis both proposes and confirms Salinger's importance to the MGM camp aesthetic. With the concept of "musical camp" thus established, the dissertation subsequently demonstrates its capacity to produce new readings of the politics of national belonging and gender that manifest in various musical numbers.</p> / Dissertation

Specialized Summer Camp for Children and Adolescents with Learning Disabilities: A Naturalistic Context for Enhancing Social Competence, Friendship, and Self-Concept

Social competence and positive self-concept are essential to future adaptive outcomes and overall well-being; but children and adolescents with learning disabilities (LD) frequently struggle in these domains. This dissertation examined changes in the social competence and self-concept of campers with learning disabilities (LD), within a specialized summer camp, with particular focus on friendship development. The dissertation is presented in two manuscripts, which will be submitted for publication. The objective of the first manuscript was to examine changes in campers’ social skills, social acceptance, self-worth, and self-esteem, within the context of summer camp, as reported by parents and campers. Parental reports indicated small gains in social skills, social acceptance, and self-worth from the beginning to the end of camp; with gains in social acceptance and self-worth maintained four to five months later. Campers did not report changes in any domains. Parents and campers reported declines in camper self-esteem at follow-up. In general, campers with LD+ADHD exhibited smaller gains in social competence and self-concept, than those with LD. Results are discussed in relation to theoretical frameworks and existing camp and LD research. The objective of the second manuscript was to investigate campers’ friendship development, within the summer camp context. Many campers reported having high-quality, reciprocal friendships at the beginning of camp. Campers reported more reciprocal friendships after camp, but these were not maintained at follow-up. Campers also reported having a best camp friend by the end of camp, and this relationship was maintained at follow-up. In terms of friendship quality, campers reported increased closeness by the end of camp and conflict ratings were low, overall. This study examined factors predicting changes in social competence. High-quality, reciprocal friendships predicted changes in campers’ social acceptance, according to parents. Similarly, reciprocal friendships predicted changes in camper reported social acceptance. These results highlight the inter-connections between friendship and aspects of social competence. Camp attendance was found to be a relevant factor in friendship development and quality. The concluding chapter discusses social competence, friendship, and self-concept outcomes for campers with LD within the context of a specialized summer camp. The implications of the findings for present theory and clinical practice are discussed, including specific recommendations for this camp’s structure and program evaluation procedures.

An Analysis of Thermoregulatory Sweating and Heat Balance in American Football Linemen and Backs

This thesis examined why NCAA Division 1 American football “linemen” experience greater heat strain than “backs” during summer training camps. In study #1, exercise at a heat production of 350 W/m2 in a hot environment (Tdb:32.4±1.0ºC; Twb:26.3±0.6ºC) resulted in greater local sweating on the upper body (head, arm, shoulder and chest; all <0.05) and a greater core temperature (P=0.033) in linemen despite a ~25% lower heat production per unit mass (L:6.0±0.5 W/kg; B:8.2±0.8 W/kg). In study #2, greater convective and evaporative heat transfer coefficients (P<0.05) were found in backs during live summer training camp drills, but these did not lead to a greater dry heat transfer or evaporative capacity. However, the maximum metabolic rate per unit mass was lower in linemen due to differences surface area-to-mass ratio. In conclusion, the greater heat strain previously reported in linemen likely arises, in part, from differences in sweating efficiency and body morphology.

Targeted knockdown of CREB1 in brain nuclei critically involved in drug-seeking behaviour

The purpose of this thesis was to characterise the contribution that a specific molecule, CREB1, plays in the many facets of a developing addiction phenotype. Indeed, CREB1 is known to contribute to long term learning and memory, and present an altered activation profile upon exposure to reinforcing substances, in brain regions implicated in addiction. Together, these observations provide a prima facie driver to investigate the specific involvement of CREB1 in brain regions implicated in reinforcement and drug-seeking. / Initially, I investigated Sprague Dawley rats whom had undergone behavioural sensitization to the repeated administration of the psychostimulant d-Amphetamine. Detailed in Chapter 3, the aims of this study were to determine the impact that environmental drug-context associations and psychostimulant sensitization makes upon expression of the activated or phosphorylated form of CREB1 (pCREB1). The data presented in the study reveals that many brain nuclei relevant to the behavioural effects of drug exposure show expression of pCREB1 subsequent to enduring amphetamine abuse, as well as upon return to an environment previously paired with amphetamine. The profile of pCREB1 expression within brains was unique to each pattern of drug dosing and context exposure, suggesting that unique sub-circuits underlie these different behavioural repertoires. / Using the impetus from this study, I determined to further investigate the contribution of CREB1 from specific brain regions, and the impact of its deletion upon behaviours characteristic of addiction. Indeed, the aims of this section of the project were to firstly employ relevant detection systems and current genetic-engineering technologies in creating appropriate expression animal lines, emphasising reward and reinforcement pathways. In addition, I aimed to understand the signalling systems and pathways which are activated by neurotransmitters, culminating in the phosphorylation of CREB and subsequently altered gene expression and long-term cellular and neuronal adaptation, induced by ongoing exposure to drugs of abuse. / Detailed in Chapter 4, I created a novel mutant mouse which was deficient in CREB1 within the dorsal telencephalon. Mice 'floxed' for the Creb1 gene expressed loxP DNA sequence around an exon critical to CREB1 function. These mice were interbred with mice expressing the enzyme Cre recombinase in dorsal telencephalic brain regions. Thus, mice expressing Cre recombinase and floxed for Creb1 demonstrated the deletion of CREB1 protein in these brain regions, which is demonstrated through experiments presented in Chapter 4. / Further in vitro characterisation of this mutant mouse was carried out and presented in Chapter 5. As CREB1 is important in synaptic plasticity and growth, it was necessary to evaluate any impact upon ontogeny through stereological analysis of cell number and volume, for relevant brain nuclei. The experiments demonstrate that mutant CREB1 mice were no different to control mice, however, it was possible that this lack of phenotype was partly contributed though changes in the level of other CREB/ATF-1/CREM bZIP family members. To this end, I determined to assay for transcript changes in these and related genes, finding confirmation of the deletion of the Creb1 transcript in the cortex and hippocampus, whilst observing a concomitant increase in Crem transcript. These data suggested that compensatory changes in brain regions receiving a recombination of Creb1 were apparent, contributing to the lack of an obvious phenotype in these mice. / Having confirmed the specific deletion of CREB1 in the appropriate brain nuclei, I then moved to examine the impact of the deletion behaviourally, both in terms of general ethology, and in regard to drug-induced phenotypes. Presented in Chapter 6, experiments assaying general ethology of the CREB1 mutant revealed a spontaneous hypoactivity when placed in a small open field environment. As CREB1 is involved in neural plasticity, I wished to assay for the impact on behavioural sensitization, a paradigm which reveals long-lived neural change. Experiments to this effect showed no perturbation of behavioural sensitization to the effects of cocaine in the mutant. In addition, mutant mice also showed a similar response to the rewarding effects cocaine as witnessed in the control mice, however, the CREB1 mutants demonstrated a perturbed drug-environment contextual memory, which was not retained in long-term place preference experiments. Operant conditioning studies for intravenous self administration of cocaine revealed that CREB1 mutants displayed a dose-specific diminished drive to self-administer cocaine, whereas in contrast, self administration of a natural reward was no different to control mice. These data suggest that there is a specific role for CREB1 in telencephalic glutamatergic neurons regulating the motivational and associative properties of cocaine. / Together, these data provide evidence that CREB1 functions as a key molecular substrate in long lived drug-context environment associations and neural change underlying the developing addicted state, warranting future investigation for its properties in producing drug related functional and behavioural change.
