Multi-scale and Complex Metallic Structure Networks for Novel Solar Energy Harvesting-Conversion Applications

Tian, Yi 05 1900 (has links)
The global consumption of fossil fuels continues to increase due to the rapid growth of energy demand, as a consequence of expanding population and human activities. Fast climate change is another inescapable issue caused by humans that need to be addressed. The development of solar energy conversion technologies is widely considered as one of the most promising solutions to sustainably maintain a modern lifestyle of the society and create a carbon-neutral social development operation mode. The solar energy is carried and delivered in the form of electromagnetic fields. Therefore, the efficiency of photon collection is the primary factor to create any solar energy conversion systems. Through the inspiration from nature, the functionalized disorder, with a specific design and engineering, can introduce unusual light-matter interaction behaviors, and thus offer a potential capability to achieve perfect light harvesting. In my thesis, we develop complex Epsilon-Near-Zero (ENZ) metamaterials that can be used either as light capturing networks or the photoactive media by turning the energy damping ratio between radiative and non-radiative channels. We successfully integrate it into thin-film photovoltaic modules with showing an excellent performance enhancement led by broadband light localization effect. Thanks to universal of such complex ENZ metamaterials, with combining a thin layer of dielectric, we further develop efficient hot-carriers driven plasmonic photo-catalysts for artificial green chemical fuel synthesis. The detailed theoretic analysis is presented in this work.

Reverzibilní imobilizace DNA na nově syntetizovaných magnetických nosičích / Reversible immobilisation of DNA on newly designed magnetic carriers

Kubisz, Petr January 2010 (has links)
The aim of work was an optimization of separation deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) with the use of nucleic acid reversible adsorption to the surface of magnetic particles coated by functional groups. Six carriers were verificated for DNA isolation: P (HEMA-co-GMA) ox, F-kol B 30 ox, F-kol 77 ox, F-kol B100 ox, F-kol 135 ox, coated with carboxyl groups and Perovskit 439 (coated by silicone). Bacterial DNA was isolated by phenol extraction procedure, first. DNA was reversibly bond to magnetis carrier in the presence of high concentration of NaCl ( 5 M) and poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG 6000). The final PEG and NaCl concentrations of 16.0 % (w/v) and 2.0 M, respectively, were used.DNA was eluted into TE buffer. The quality of extracted DNA was checked by PCR amplification. It was found out that although different quantities of DNA were isolated, the quality of isolated DNA was always compatible with PCR. Nanoparticles Perovskit 439 had the best separative characteristics in comparison to the other magnetic carriers because highest amounts of DNA was isolated. However, next optimisation of DNA separation procedure is required for the use of studied microspheres in real samples.

A preliminary study of the distribution of fleas in Utah known to be capable and potential vectors of plague

Allred, Dorald M. 01 June 1951 (has links)
Plague outbreaks in the past have been disastrous where domestic rats and their fleas of certain species were common. Plague has been known to occur in most parts of the world (Robertson 1923), and has occurred as human epidemics for many centuries (Dubos 1948).

The cat flea, Ctenocephalides Felis, as a potential vector of Trypanosoma Lewisi

Belihar, Robert Patrick 01 August 1968 (has links)
The first hemoflagellate was discovered by Valentine in 1841; two years later Gruby established the genus Trypanosoma for a flagel-late in the blood of frogs, and in 1879 Lewis in India described Try-panosoma lewisi Kent of the rat (Belding, 1965:141).

An investigation of in vitro percutaneous penetration enhancement of benzocaine by azone, dimethylsulfoxide, and 2-pyrrolidone

Benkorah, Amal Y. 01 January 1986 (has links) (PDF)
This research utilizing full thickness human abdominal skin was designed to assess the in vitro percutaneous penetration of benzocaine by 1-dodecylazacycloheptan-2-one (Azone) , dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) and 2-pyrrolidone (2-P) under conditions of constant thermodynamic activity in the vehicle. The solubilities of benzocaine in Azone and 80/20, 60/40 and 40/60 V/V DMSO/water systems were found to be 254.17, 533.00, 68.60 and 2.51 mg/ml respectively. All three adjuvants demonstrated a significant but concentration- dependent enhancement of benzocaine penetration. On the basis of comparative analysis of the steady-state fluxes, Azone was most effective at the level of 5% V/V when drug concentration was twice the saturation solubility _jn the 20/80 PG/water gel. At higher Azone levels, any penetration enhancement effects were strongly negated by a corresponding decrease in skin/vehicle partitioning. Azone appeared to enhance penetration of benzocaine molecules by directly reducing the barrier function of the stratum corneum. DMSO-induced enhancement of benzocaine penetration was observed over 40/80% V/V DMSO. Pretreatment studies strongly suggested that enhancement by DMSO is due to a significant but temporary effect on the epidermal barrier. The moderate enhancement of benzocaine penetration shown by 80% 2-P in water could be due to a decrease in diffusional resistance of stratum corneum brought on by a slow interaction between the stratum corneum and 2-P.

Study of the aspectional variations of siphonaptera associated with the nests of the Thomas wood rat Neotoma lepida lepida Thomas

Howell, J. Franklin 01 December 1954 (has links)
Much work has been done concerning those parasites found upon the host. Very little has been done concerning those parasites that are parasitic but are very rarely found upon the host. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine seasonal distribution of those fleas found in the nests of the desert wood rat (N. l. lepida). This paper shows that there is a seasonal variation of flea populations within a certain geographic area. It also shows that certain species of fleas are distributed seasonally; not all species being present in the same season. Three of the eleven species collected from the nests are plague implicated, being either potential or capable vectors. A number of other nest consortes were found to demonstrate seasonal variations to some extent. Collecting and laboratory methods for the collection and preparation of fleas are discussed.

The second-hand market for bulk carriers

Panagakos, George 12 June 2010 (has links)
The thesis attempts to explain the resale prices of bulk carriers. The effects of the physical characteristics of ships on second-hand values, along with those of the prevailing freight rates in the market, and those of ship operating costs are theoretically discussed. The results of previous studies on the subject are presented. The main hypothesis tested in the study is that a ship's resale price is the present value of the expected future cashflow generated by its operation. The expected future freight rates required for the analysis are obtained by assuming adaptive and rational expectations among others. Market expectations on freight rates, as measured by the price of freight futures contracts exchanged in BIFFEX, are also tested. The developed model is applied on recent ship sales with very encouraging results. / Master of Arts
