Interaction aube-carter : contribution de l’usure de l’abradable et de la thermomécanique sur la dynamique d’aube / Blade-casing interaction : contribution of the abradable wear and the thermomechanical behavior on the blade dynamics

Millecamps, Antoine 10 September 2010 (has links)
The issue for the turbojet engine designers is to make less polluting et more efficient engine. A solution is to reduce significantly the clearance between the rotating bladed disk and the casing. However, operating with a very tight clearance induces inevitably interactions which can lead to loses of blades. Many studies identifying the vibratory phenomena are appeared as insufficient to totally understand the problem of contact. To reach a milestone this work proposes the study of the influence of the local phenomena during a blade-casing rubbing contact: wear and thermomechanical behavior. At first, the results of a study of a blade-casing contact performed on an experimental compressor of a turbojet at a real scale are analyzed in order to clearly identify the wear of the casing and the heating at the contact.Numerical simulations are preformed to explain these experimental observations. A study of the blade dynamics can explain the wear pattern of the casing. Thermomechanical simulations highlight a significant influence of thermal expansions on the contact.A numerical study of the dynamics of a blade interacting with a casing is performed with the consideration of the wear induced by the contact and the heatings and thermal expansions occurring at the local contact. It clearly highlights the influence of these phenomena on the blade dynamics, notably the variations of vibratory behavior and the conditions which can lead to the divergence of the system.

The Statement that is Randolph Carter: Growth in a Nihilistic Universe

Karlsson, Ludwig January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this essay is to give a nuanced and problematized view of the notion that the literary universe of H.P. Lovecraft is purely nihilistic, in the most basic sense of the word, and instead try to show that it, in spite of this actually allows for both hope and growth for its characters. To do so, the essay will closely examine one of Lovecraft’s few recurring protagonists, Randolph Carter, who in relation to Lovecraft’s other characters, is much more on the outside of society than a part of it. To accomplish this, the essay will focus on those of Lovecraft’s texts which feature Carter and this one’s personal goals, philosophy and morals in relation to those of the society that surrounds him. Carter’s character and actions and ideals will throughout this be contrasted to the philosophical ideas of Friedrich Nietzsche to try to show that adherence to Nietzschean virtues can allow a character to actually transcend the supposed intrinsic nihilism and horror of Lovecraft’s universe. In examining Carter, central concepts will include, among other things: the search for beauty, the power of dreams as well as the power of passion, as well as Nietzschean concepts such as The Will to Power, Apollonian and Dionysian, The Eternal Return and Nihilism.

An analytical study of Elliott Carter's piano sonata

Perkyns, Jane E. Gormley January 1990 (has links)
This analytical study of Elliott Carter's Piano Sonata focuses on middleground structural aspects found in the work such as phrases, phrase groupings, cadences and note collections. These are examined under four main headings: The Articulation of Phrases looks at the division of large passages into phrases, showing the various ways in which new phrases are marked. These include sudden changes in texture and register, restatements of thematic material, and recurring characteristics that appear at important cadential points. The Unification of Extended Passages by Middleground Stepwise Motion focuses on the rising linear motion that connects the individual phrases of many of these larger passages. Correlations between thematic material and phrase contours are also explored. The Relationship of Vertical Intervals and Note Collections to the Character and Phrase Rhythm of Particular Passages further examines phrase articulation by means of changes in note collections, with distinctions among phrases arising from the correlation of consonant vertical intervals with passages of linear motion and dissonant vertical intervals with passages that are more static. Anticipation and Overlapping of Materials describes an important aspect of the Sonata's overall structure in which themes and motives, as well as characteristic intervals of these materials are used to link the two movements of the work by a network of anticipations and flashbacks. An examination of the final climactic Maestoso section of the first movement (mm. 252-264) provides a summary of the various compositional aspects described in this study. / Arts, Faculty of / Music, School of / Graduate

Lone Star Booster: The Life of Amon G. Carter

Cervantez, Brian 12 1900 (has links)
Abstract Though a very influential Texan during the first half of the twentieth century, Amon Carter has yet to receive a full scholarly treatment, a problem which this dissertation attempts to rectify by investigating the narrative of Carter’s life to see how and why he was able to rise from humble beginnings to become a powerful publisher who symbolized boosterish trends within Texas and the New South. Publisher of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, philanthropist, oilman, and aviation supporter, Carter used his power and influence to become a leading booster of his city and region seamlessly making the transition from being a business progressive to New Deal supporter to an Eisenhower Democrat. His connections with corporations like American Airlines and General Motors helped bring aviation and industry to his region, and his ability to work with public and private entities helped inspire his failed attempt to make the Trinity River navigable up to Fort Worth. His own success at building the Star-Telegram into the largest circulating newspaper in Texas encouraged him to expand his media empire into radio and television, while the wealth he gained from his oil activities enabled him to form a philanthropic foundation that would provide support for Fort Worth’s medical, cultural, and educational needs for the future. Possessing a life marked by both success and failure, it is clear throughout this dissertation that Carter embodied the idea of the New South civic booster, a figure who at once promoted his goals for his city and region while understanding how this fit within the larger national context.

Cáceres Valdovinos, José January 2016 (has links)
