A Dynamic User-Centric Mobile Context Model

Context-aware systems can dynamically adapt to user situations to provide smarter services. In general, context refers to the information that can be used to characterize these situations, and context models are deployed to specify contextual information described in context-aware systems. However, even though user context is highly dynamic, existing context models either focus on modeling static views of context or lack appropriate design abstractions to deal with dynamic aspects and interactions involving contextual elements such location, time, user roles, social relationships, and changing preferences. Moreover, virtual environments have not been modelled by most of the existing context models even though online interaction is very common and popular. This thesis presents a dynamic user-centric context model that can be used to model the aspects of context-aware systems that are subject to frequent change. Four case studies are proposed to illustrate the applicability of the approach taken by this thesis, and they are in the domains of mobile e-healthcare, mobile commerce, mobile tourism, and mobile augmented reality gaming. Benefits of the proposed model include avoiding the development of context-aware systems from scratch, enabling future use of model-driven approaches, and reducing implementation effort.

Optimization of contrast and signal homogeneity for high resolution 3D MRI of human brain at 1.5 Tesla

The inhomogeneous B1 field at higher main fields (B0) becomes more serious, leading to unsatisfactory MR image quality. To improve the signal homogeneity of routinely used T1-weighted image, usually acquired by a well-known sequence, Magnetization Prepared Rapid Acquisition Gradient Echo (MPRAGE), a new pulse sequence, Magnetization Prepared 2 Rapid Acquisition Gradient Echoes (MP2RAGE), was proposed in 2009. This technique acquires two sets of high-resolution three- dimentional images at different inversion times after a series of inversion pulses. After any of two simple calculations of the raw images (Ratio or MP2RAGE reconstruction), the output volume was obtained with dramatically reduced spatial inhomogenuity of MR signal. In this study, the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) optimation at 3 T was implemented independently to reproduce the previous results of other group. After that, the simulation of scanning parameters was done to optimize CNR of brain tissue at 1.5 T according to different encoding methods, different pulse sequences, and different reconstruction algorithms. Phantom and human experiments were carried on a 1.5 T scanner for further validation. The results of phantom experiment showed that both MP2RAGE and Ratio reconstructions can achiever better B1 homogeneity than MPRAGE, even with the vendor-equipped correction packages, SCIC and PURE. In addition, the agreement was made between simulation and in-vivo imaging that MP2RAGE provides higher CNR than Ratio when centric encoding also outduels linear encoding.

Merge in Transit, a distribution method in the industrial environment

<p>In a fast moving environment and in a globalized market, companies are searching efficient distribution methods that enable broad product assortment, lower level of inventories, shorter customer order fulfilment, lower transportation costs in order to achieve a more efficient procurement process and a improved customer service. This paper will focus on a new solution in supply chain design to solve these trade-offs between management cost cutting and higher customer level within markets characterized by an increasing globalisation. Merge in transit (MIT) distribution method allows companies to reduce inventory and transportation costs while guaranteeing a high customer perceived service level. It is a new technique in which goods shipped from several supply locations are consolidated into one final customer delivery. The company needs to coordinate shipments so that they arrive simultaneously and goods can be bundled and shipped immediately to the final customer for arrival on due date. Economical benefits and drawbacks will be investigated from a supply chain prospective.</p>

Aircraft Trajectory Optimization with Tactical Constraints

<p>Aircrafttrajectory optimization is traditionally used forminimizing fuel consumption or time when going from one flightstate to another. This thesis presents a possible approach toincorporate tactical constraints in aircraft trajectoryoptimization.</p><p>The stealth technology of today focuses on making thetactics already in use more effective. Since tactics andstealth are closely interrelated, new and better results may beobtained if both aspects are considered simultaneously. Simplyreducing the radar cross section area in some directionswithout considering tactical aspects may result in little, ifany, improvement.</p><p>Flight tests have been performed in cooperation withEricsson Microwave Systems and the Swedish Air Force FlightAcademy. The aircraft used was the subsonic jet trainer Saab105, designated SK60 by the Swedish Air Force. The results showa decrease of 40% in the time interval between the instant theaircraft was first detected until it could pass above the radarstation. This corresponds to a reduced radar cross section(RCS) in the direction from the aircraft to the radar of almost90%, if classical RCS reduction techniques would have beenapplied.</p><p>If a modern aircraft with stealth properties would be used,the proposed methodology is believed to increase the possibleimprovements further. This is because the variation of themagnitude of RCS in different directions is greater for a shapeoptimized aircraft, which is the property exploited by thedeveloped method.</p><p>The methods presented are indeed an approach utilizing theideas of the network centric warfare (NCW) concept. Themethodology presented depends on accurate information about theadversary, while also providing up-to-date information to theother users in the information network.</p><p>The thesis focuses on aircraft but the methods are generaland may be adapted for missiles, shipsor land vehicles. Theproposed methods are also economically viable since they areuseful for existing platforms without costly modifications. Themethods presented are not limited to radar threats only. Thereasons for using radar in this thesis are the availablenon-classified data and that radar is known to pose a majorthreat against aircraft.</p>

Collaborative information acquisition

Increasingly, predictive models are used to support routine business de- cisions and are integral to the strategic competitive business strategies for a wide range of industries. Most often, data-driven predictive models are in- duced from training data obtained through the businesss routine operations. However, recent research on policies for intelligent information acquisitions suggests that proactive acquisition of information can improve models at a lower cost. Most active information acquisition policies are accuracy centric; they aim to identify acquisitions of training data that are particularly benefi- cial for improving the predictive accuracy of a given model. In practice, however, inferences from a predictive model are often used along with inferences from other predictive models as well as constant factors to inform arbitrarily complex decisions. In this dissertation, I discuss how these settings motivate a new kind of collaborative information acquisition (CIA) policies that exploit knowledge of the decision to allow multiple predictive models to collaboratively prioritize the prospective information acquisitions, so as to best improve the decisions they inform jointly. I present a framework for CIA policies and two specific CIA policies: CIA for binary decisions (CIA-BD), and CIA for top-ranked opportu- nities in terms of expected revenue (CIA-TR). Extensive empirical evaluations of the policies on real-world data suggest that the notion of CIA policies is indeed a valuable one. In particular, I demonstrate that these two new poli- cies lead to superior decision-making performances as compared to those of alternative policies that are either decision-centric or do not allow multiple models to collaboratively prioritize acquisitions. The performance exhibited by the CIA policies suggest that these policies are able to effectively exploit knowledge of the decisions to avoid greedy improvements in accuracy of any individual model informing the decisions; instead, they promote improvements in any one or all of the models when such improvements are likely to benefit the decisions. / text

The intent of the "TENA-Enabled Range Roadmap" is to describe how TENA would be incorporated into PMRF's range infrastructure through both near-term upgrades and long-term system replacement. While details of this implementation plan are specific to PMRF, this roadmap can serve as a blueprint for TENA implementation at other ranges throughout the DoD.

Enabling information-centric networking : architecture, protocols, and applications

As the Internet is becoming information-centric, network services increasingly demand scalable and efficient communication of information between a multitude of information producers and large groups of interested information consumers. Such information-centric services are growing rapidly in use and deployment. Examples of deployed services that are information-centric include: IPTV, MMORPG, VoD, video conferencing, file sharing, software updates, RSS dissemination, online markets, and grid computing. To effectively support future information-centric services, the network infrastructure for multi-point communication has to address a number of significant challenges: (i) how to understand massive information-centric groups in a scalable manner, (ii) how to analyze and predict the evolution of those groups in an accurate and efficient way, and (iii) how to disseminate content from information producers to a vast number of groups with potentially long-lived membership and highly diverse, dynamic group activity levels? This dissertation proposes novel architecture and protocols that effectively address the above challenges in supporting multi-point communication for future information-centric network services. In doing so, we make the following three major contributions: (1) We develop a novel technique called Proximity Embedding (PE) that can approximate a family of path-ensembled based proximity measures for information-centric groups. We develop Clustered Spectral Graph Embedding (SCGE) that captures the essential structure of large graphs in a highly efficient and scalable manner. Our techniques help to explain the proximity (closeness) of users in information-centric groups, and can be applied to a variety of analysis tasks of complex network structures. (2) Based on SCGE, we develop new supervision based link prediction techniques called Clustered Spectral Learning and Clustered Polynomial Learning that enable us to predict the evolution of massive and complex network structures in an accurate and efficient way. By exploiting supervised information from past snapshots of network structures, our methods yield up to 20% improvement in link prediction accuracy when compared to existing state-of-the-art methods. (3) Finally, we develop a novel multicast infrastructure called Multicast with Adaptive Dual-state (MAD). MAD supports large number of group and group membership, and efficient content dissemination in a presence of dynamic group activity. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in extensive simulation, analysis, and emulation through the real system implementation. / text
