Note: / The object of this thesis is to see if the kenotic theory still gives the most meaningful Christology for today. This will be attempted by discussing and commentating on the views of a range of Twentieth Century theologians, comparing those who agree with those who are against kenosis. In an age when not only other religions are making themselves a real force in the world, but also when men are apt to make all sorts of differing statements about God, it seemed necessary to the writer to see just what is our Christian claim. Having completed the work of this thesis, the author feels as strongly as he did at the start as to what faith in Our Lord implies. Because of this faith, Chapter I was written and placed first though in a way it should logically be last. It endeavours to set belief that Jesus Christ is unique in a context which can relate to non-Christian men in the world. Chapter II gives a brief survey of the New Testament witness to Jesus. Chapter III gives the early concept of the kenosis theory. Chapter 17 is a review of the Christologies of some leading Twentieth Century theologians, criticising certain details. Chapter 7 concludes this thesis in a context of worship, saying that only a Christology and a conception of God which draw forth the highest devotion of man can be considered satisfactory. It is argued that only a kenotic Christology achieves this object.

In four pieces selected from the late Baroque repertoire, the "Allemanda" from Corelli's Sonata for Violin and Continuo, Opus 5, No. 8, the "Allemande" from Bach's Clavierubung, Partita, No. 1, the chorus, "Thy Right Hand, Oh Lord" from Handel's Israel in Egypt, and the aria duetto, "Mein Freund ist Mein" from Cantata No. 140, Wachet Auf, by Bach, harmonic, melodic and motivic parameters are analysed and graphed so that their integration in each work is readily observable. Then, in an attempt to establish more general formal models similar to those developed by Arnold Schoenberg, Erwin Ratz, and William E. Caplin for the classical style, recurring patterns of integration are noted. Of special significance is the prominence of acceleration processes in each piece and their diversity, both in the parameters involved, as well as in the structural levels on which these processes operate.

Roger Smith has noted that theology has been overlooked within studies looking at early modern contructions of personhood. This thesis looks at the Lutheran pastor Christian Scriver’s (1629-1693) Gottholds zufälliger Andachten (1667), a popular seventeenth-century devotional, in order to investigate the way in which the author utilized his understanding of theology in order to help the people under his spiritual care refashion a sense of both self and identity within the turbulent decades following the Thirty Years’ War. This study challenges current historiographies which either marginalize the place of theology within early modern discussions of personhood and identity, or which treat theology’s contribution as being nothing more than a fostering of a radical affective-interiority. It also complicates the received historiographical caricature of Scriver as an uncritical proponent of Arndtian spirituality. Scriver’s zufälliger Andachten illustrate a rich social and interpersonal conception of what it means to be human, built upon the foundations of a Lutheran theological anthropology. Combined with Scriver’s adaptation of medieval exemplarism, and set within Luther’s reformation of the medieval practice of devotional reading, Scriver’s Andachten offer a useful glimpse into the way in which early modern devotional writings contributed to the creation of confessional identities through a process of what Lance Lazar has called “devotional modeling.” At the same time, I argue for a more thorough engagement with theology among historians as a formative part of early modern cultural discourse.

The leather tanning industry of the mid-19th to early 20th Century plays an important role in our social and economic evolution. An abundance of information on the industry can be obtained from historical documentation. However, leather tanning is not well represented in the archaeological record. In order to grasp its cultural implications, the historic tanning industry must be studied within an archaeological context. Interpretations derived from the material culture gained from archaeological excavations can augment the known history of the industry. However, given the current lack of archaeological information, it is difficult to anticipate the types of features that are likely to be encountered on tannery sites. This thesis paper will present a synthesis of historical accounts with what we know from past archaeological investigations resulting in predictive model for future tannery excavations. The poems in The Observing Ape are arranged into three chapters: "Neighbors," "Making," and "Strangers." At their core, these poems trace the ways in which speakers internalize the exterior world. Although no single narrative unifies the collection, each poem records the consciousness of a speaker as the interior and the exterior intersect. Through persona poems and intensely perceived images, the collection strives to understand how humans learn, observe, and imagine. However, forays into visual art, primatology, and voyeurism color the poems with cultural referents, and these referents infuse the poems with a quirky reverence for a world that stretches beyond a strictly linguistic or personal experience. / Department of English
