Modélisation et conception d'un système de mesure de comportement électrique de cellules vivantes : application aux épithéliums intestinaux / Modeling and design of a voltage clamp used to measure electrical parameters of biological tissues : application to intestinal epitheliumsMathieu, Julien 13 November 2008 (has links)
With electrical parameters such as the short circuit current, the transepithelial voltage and the conductance it is possible to study electrogenic transport across biological barriers. These measurements can be useful for the study of a molecule on the basis of its crossing behavior and its action on the epithelium properties, its dose effect relationship and its comparison with known molecules. The purpose of this work was to achieve an automated device which can measure these three electrical parameters. The used measurement principle is based on the Ussing’s chamber. This principle consists in mounting a biological tissue between two half chambers in order to isolate its mucosal side from its serous side and to measure its electrical parameters using working electrodes and reference electrodes. The study led to the design of a modified Ussing’s chamber which improves the fluid flow and the electric current density through the biological tissue. Stainless steel electrodes have been also studied in order to demonstrate their potential use in the chamber. The measurement principle is based on a controller synthesized from a simplified transfer function model. A more accurate model of the interfaces with various tissues was carried out by impedance spectroscopy and was used for the controller’s simulation and calibration. The results were checked with a reference system and allow to consider the proposed method as an improvement of the Ussing’s chamber.

Mixed chamber music for trombone: an exploration of the genre through performance analyses of works by Roseman, Rush, and KurtágAllen, Jonathan Sayre 01 May 2011 (has links)
The essay: 1) Establishes that there is a tradition of employing trombone in mixed chamber works, 2) Shows that there is a large body of chamber music composed since 1978 and 2010 in which no more than one trombone is employed, 3) Discusses works composed between 1978 and 2010 and discusses performance practice issues and obstacles in order to provide a resource for trombonists in the development and presentation of these works, 4) Presents, as a list, a survey of available mixed chamber music written since 1978 that utilizes one trombone.

Musical Moments
abstract
The inspiration for this piece came largely from my encounters with Miles Davis’s composition “Flamenco Sketches” from his album “Kind of Blue”. Initially, I wanted to write a piece that would have a highly dramatic emotional content with some influences drawn from flamenco music. The only thing that I drew from flamenco is a progression of chords that loosely hint at Phrygian mode (often used in flamenco). Other elements of the music and the development of musical material are not
related to flamenco or to Davis’s “Flamenco Sketches”. “Musical Moments” presents four different moods: calm but anxious, joyous and assertive, indecisive and contemplative, restless and explosive. Each of these moods creates a separate section of the piece which when combined shape a single movement work.

The link between convection and crystallization in a sub-axial magma chamber and heat output in a seafloor hydrothermal systemLiu, Lei 10 July 2007 (has links)
In this thesis, I present a simple time-dependent model of heat transfer between a turbulently convecting and crystallizing magma body and the overlying hydrothermal circulation. Most of the known seafloor hydrothermal sites on faster-spreading ridges are dominated by basalt. The hydrothermal fields within parts of the Lau Basin in the Southwest Pacific are driven by andesitic magma. To determinate the different characteristics of magma-driven hydrothermal system, two types of magma material, basaltic and andesitic magma are considered. Two different crystallization scenarios are considered¡ªcrystals in suspension and crystals settling. In either case, I assume that large-scale convection within the magma chamber is homogenous. Also, the effect of crystallinity and water content-dependent magmatic viscosity is considered.
Based on the proposed models, the total heat output from the upper surface of the magma chamber and the temperature in hydrothermal system are derived numerically. The simulation results show that without magma replenishment, the heat output and hydrothermal temperature decay rapidly within about ten years. For two different crystallization distribution cases, such rapid decay is not consistent with observations.
The conflict between the simulation results and the field observations shows the need to develop more accurate magma convection models. Different from the existing modeling methods, I propose to model the magma convection with replenishment. The replenishment model can be classified into two categories in terms of status of magma chamber size. To replenish the magma system without changing the magma chamber size, the heat flux decaying rate is slowed down and hydrothermal system lifetime is extended for a little longer. Although this model is more accurate than existing ones in terms of slow decaying rate of heat flux, it does not achieve a steady state as is observed. This leads us to model replenishment with variant magma chamber size. I model the replenishment rate as a constant and exponential decay, respectively. Thus, I assume the magma chamber size is time-varying. Simulation results show that magma heat flux approaches a steady state over a time scale of decades. This result is consistent with the observations, which indicates the effectiveness of proposed modeling methods.

Development of a Long-term Operation DMFC Stack with no Performance DecayChen, Chien-ming 06 September 2010 (has links)
In this thesis, a long-term operation direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) stack with no performance decay is developed. In a passive DMFC, its performance will decay after a short period, if the weak methanol solution is supplied. Although the strong methanol solution may slightly increase the operating time, it tends to crossover leading to cathode Pt particle poisoned, and it is still unable to maintain long-term operation stably.
In our passive DMFC, there are two chambers in the anode. They are a pure methanol chamber and a 2~3M methanol solution chamber. By adjusting the diffusion gate outlet of the pure methanol chamber to control the diffusion rate of pure methanol, the appropriate pure methanol deliver to maintain methanol concentration in the anode reaction chamber stably.
If the anode reaction chamber is initially filled with 0.8 c.c., 3M methanol solution and without additional fuel supply, experimental results show that the performance of the DMFC begin decay after about 30 minutes. If the appropriate amount of methanol is supplied, the cell can maintain a long-term operation with no performance decay. The methanol concentration between 1.5 and 3M only has a little impact on the current output. Experimental results also show that the initial methanol concentration 2M is able to maintain a cell operation more stable than it in 3M. However, the initial methanol concentration and appropriate methanol supply is also important to maintain a DMFC for a long-term operation stably.
