Application of GENESIS: Modeling Long-Term Shorelines Changes

Yang, Tien-Wei 10 February 2003 (has links)
ABSTRACT Most sandy beaches around the world have been under the threat of being eroded in the past six decades, resulting in shoreline retreat; thus, calling for various shoreline protection devices to be constructed to preserve the well-being of coastal habitants. To achieve this purpose, research on shoreline changes and development of numerical or mathematical models for predicting shoreline changes would help attain the goal of sustainable use of coastal land. This thesis reports preliminary engineering applications of GENESIS that have become a popular tool for modeling long-term shoreline changes. The aim of this study is to predict the potential shoreline change in the light of different layouts of shoreline protection devices. The topics addressed in this report include the discussion on the parameters in GENESIS; shoreline changes in the lee and/or on the back of single groin and single detached breakwater with normal or oblique wave incidence; comparison on the efficiency of beach accretion as a function of gap width between structures and the sequence of their construction, as well as assessment on the restraint from the two different boundary conditions used in GENESIS. The results of modeling using GENESIS are then verified using the result based on the empirical parabolic bay shape equation and a physical scale model, in order to test the feasibility of applying GENESIS for practical engineering uses. From the results of this study, it can be stated that GENESIS is valuable reference tool for engineering design, despite some shortcomings in setting up boundary conditions and the invariant nature of and values which do not respond to the process of changing shoreline curvature. However, the GENESIS system would have a positive contribution to the modeling of shoreline changes upon the construction of protective devices on a coast.

A geographic information system (GIS) based determination of estuarine and marine wetland and shoreline changes in the Galveston Bay estuary from 1995 to 2002

Taylor, Christina Claudette 10 October 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to identify and quantify estuarine and marine wetland and shore changes circa Galveston Bay Estuary (GBE) from 1995 to 2002 by using aerial photography and GIS mapping techniques. Aerial photographs in digital format were acquired from Texas Natural Resource Information System (TNRIS) and the Houston Galveston Area Council (HGAC); these photographs were selected because the images were taken at the time period desired, existed in digital formats at resolutions of 1 m or greater, and were in coordinate systems that were already in or could be properly aligned and georeferenced. Maps for each of thirty quadrangles that include estuarine and/or marine habitats around the GBE were created, depicting wetlands and shorelines for the years 1995 and 2002 as well as changes between the two time periods. Polygons representing different habitats in 1995 were drawn while working at a scale of 1:4,000 or greater. Maps of habitats in 2002 and maps showing changes from 1995 to 2002 were produced by modifying individual 1995 polygons to document boundary shifts or habitat changes from 1995 to 2002. All resulting maps were constructed at 1:24,000 scale in UTM NAD 83 coordinate system to match USGS quad maps. Areas of each habitat in 1995 and 2002 and changes between the two years were calculated in acres and comparisons were made. There were four objectives developed to be examined by the creation of the new set of maps for GBE. They were to determine habitat changes during the time period in question, effectiveness of mapping technique, where differences in change occurred, and what type (i.e. erosion, development, accretion, etc.) of change occurred. My analyses of these maps indicated that there were 117,670 acres of estuarine wetlands and 21,983 acres of unconsolidated estuarine and marine shores present in 1995. In 2002, these values changed to 116,534 acres of estuarine wetlands and 21,630 acres of estuarine and marine shores. The rate of wetland loss was estimated as 162 acres per year or 0.1% of all wetlands annually from 1995 to 2002. This rate has slowed from the previous rate of 405 acres per year or 0.4% in 1979 and remained the same as the 161 acres per year or 0.1% reported in 1993 for the GBE. Further, the results of my analyses indicated that losses from direct human influences (e.g. development, dredging, and filling) were less than losses associated with natural processes like erosion and subsidence.

A Study of The System Changes of EPZ -from New Institutionalism viewpoint

Lee, Chang-an 28 January 2008 (has links)
After the Second World War, Export Processing Zone (EPZ) is the most concrete symbol which lead Taiwan¡¦s economy starting to blossom. EPZ is the main role who guided Taiwan entering the magnificent economical development. EPZ not only increases the domestic employment rate but also creates Taiwan economical miracle. Instead of moving towards the deterioration like other country¡¦s EPZ, Taiwan¡¦s EPZ constantly grows. Therefore it is worth to make a study of this special Institutional power which guides the Taiwan¡¦s EPZ to transform and develop. This research adopted Ostrom¡¦s system analysis model of "the rational choice Institutional theory¡¨ in New Institutionalism to describe the Institutional transformation process in EPZ for the recent 41 years. This study composed seven parts to describe the Institutional transformation process, such as ¡§event or property feature¡¨, ¡§character of community¡¨, ¡§institutional arrangement¡¨, " decision situation feature¡¨, ¡§actor feature¡¨, ¡§action, activity and strategy¡¨, and ¡§collective outcome¡¨. This research clearly described the Institutional development and transformation process of EZP. Through this research we can understand how nation, companies in EZP and association communicated with each other, braked Institutional structure constrain, changed old Institution, and helped EPZ continue to transform and grow. This research¡¦s contribution is using the Institutional economy viewpoint to analyze EZP¡¦s Institutional innovation and transformation which drive economical development of EPZ during these 41 years.

A Tunable Emission Prepared by Novel Photo-induced Color-Change Materials

Ting, Wei 31 January 2008 (has links)
In this thesis , we studied a green emitter (C545T) dopanted SU8. C545T is an organic dye. [10-(2-benzothiazolyl)-1,1,7,7-tetramethyl-2,3,6,7-tetrahydro-1H,5H,11Hbenzo[l]-pyrano[6,7,8-ij]quinolizin-11one(C545T)] . When the sample of C545T and SU8 with thin films were exposured to UV-light. We found that the thin film between with UV exposure (L1-Red) and without UV exposure (L2-Green) will show the different chemistry properties. We can achieve proper CIE coordinates and color by adjusting .The different concentrations of C545T dopanted in SU8 thin films. The L1 and L2 were close-kint blue back-light in order to achieve a tunable emission module . If we crafted meticulously optimization , we can find a exclusive white light. This is a optic thin film attach to Color-change materials

Value Change and Consumer Materialism in Taiwan: An Empirical Perspective

W. Bolton, Timothy 16 October 2009 (has links)
This study focuses on the personal and consumer values of Taiwanese students. Particular focus is placed on determining whether the materialism scales of Ronald Inglehart (1997), Richard Belk (1985), and Marsha Richins and Scott Dawson (1992) can be used interchangeably to measure materialism or whether they measure slightly different dimensions of respondents¡¦ personal values. The World Values Survey was used to allow the current sample to be compared to international results, as well as to past surveys of Taiwanese. Correlation analysis was utilized to determine the strength of relationships between the three materialism scales. The analysis phase showed that materialism as defined by Belk (1985) and Richins and Dawson (1992) were more strongly related to each other than to the materialism scale created by Inglehart. This study also finds that while the population of Taiwan is very similar to that of China based on the findings of the World Values Survey, the current sample of students is actually dissimilar to the general population of Taiwan. The current sample implies a mixture of materialist and postmaterialist values that more closely resembles the populations of Japan or the United States than the general population of Taiwan. These findings are consistent with literature suggesting that younger, more affluent sectors of a population will show stronger postmaterialist values than older, less affluent groups.

The Change Process: A Study of the Move to Block Scheduling in Five Pennsylvania High Schools

Lessel, Howard S. 08 August 2011 (has links)
The process of large-scale change is difficult in any organizational structure, and this is particularly true in the field of education. This qualitative study investigated the change process used by five high schools in eastern Pennsylvania while initiating, implementing and sustaining a large-scale change from traditional to block scheduling. This study looks at the entire large-scale change process from inception through evaluation. Through the lens of the large-scale change to block scheduling, the researcher analyzed change in five schools with similar demographics to determine whether similarities existed in the change process and whether school change can be linked to a specific model of change. This study, conducted using a three interview protocol (Seidman, 1998), was guided by one primary research question: What is the process used by high schools to plan, implement and sustain large-scale change? Three research sub-questions supported the primary question: 1) What was the impetus for change to block scheduling?; 2) What process was used by the district to plan and implement the change to block scheduling?; and 3) How has the change to block scheduling been sustained by the district? The participants interviewed included five superintendents, five high school principals and twenty classroom teachers who worked at the participating schools during the transition to block scheduling. Several common characteristics were identified which contributed to the successful implementation of a large-scale change initiative. These include the creation of a committee to plan and implement the change, involvement of stakeholders, and the use of professional development to support the change. A major implication of this study is the identification of the importance of effective leadership during the change process. It was found that the impetus for change involved an organizational leader with a vision for change. One interesting finding was that though all five schools were successful in implementing the change, very little has been done to help sustain the change. Contrary to the research in the literature, this study found that ongoing professional development is not essential to sustaining large-scale change. / Dr. George R.
