This research project attempted to investigate the Management of the School-Parent Relationships in a Primary School. The aims of this study were to determine to what extent parents participate in school activities and whether parental participation in school activities is being optimised. An important pre- condition in developing a positive relationship between schools and parents is the need to persuade school-based personnel that their professionalism includes recognising the integral role of parents in the educational enterprise. The key focus of this study was to determine the perceptions of school based personnel and parents of the learners of the school regarding the current state of the relationship between the school and the parents. The subjects of this study were the principal, two heads of department, the school-clerk, thirteen level one educators and a sample of eighty parents of the learners of the school. The study was conducted at a Primary School in the Chatsworth District. The overall aim was enhance the relationship between the school and the parents at the researched site. This study employed the quantitative approach in its methodology. Data were gathered from interviews and questionnaires The results of the study have revealed that there is potential to enhance the relationships with parents at the school. Efforts to improve the relationship includes, encouraging parents to identify with the aims of the school, providing some form of education, training and guidance for parents who do not fully understand their role in education, adopting a participative and consultative style management when interacting with the parents, identifying skills and competencies of parents, encouraging effective two-way communication with parents, accommodating parents with busy work schedules and acknowledging parents for their assistance. This research project has also proposed possible recommendations to assist the school based personnel and the School Governing Body to develop and sustain stronger and positive relationships with the parents. South African Indians and HIV/AIDS: contextual factors in the experiences of HIV/AIDS in Chatsworth, KwaZulu-Natal.

This study set out to examine contextual level drivers of HIV among the South African Indian community of Chatsworth. Very little is currently known about HIV/AIDS among South African Indians. It was from this starting point that I set out to research this largely unexplored study topic, to gain insight into and understanding of the non-biological factors that underlie the spread of HIV/AIDS among people in Chatsworth. In-depth interviews, informal discussions and participant observation were carried out among community members, including members who were HIV positive. Findings revealed that poverty, gender power relations and stigma were major social factors contributing to the growth of HIV/AIDS within the South African Indian community of Chatsworth. Poverty places many in vulnerable positions, having to choose between treatment and disability grants to buy food for example, and gender inequalities make women more susceptible to contracting HIV than men. Culture plays a role in placing women in high risk situations. Furthermore stigma, denial and discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS makes it very difficult for HIV positive people to disclose their status and to live their lives in the community. The importance of understanding the context in which the HIV/AIDS pandemic is occurring and the various cultural factors that play a role in the experience of HIV/AIDS in people?s lives, is argued to be vital to the development of successful strategies to prevent and manage the disease. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2010.

The Queen of Aquatics:The 1849 Display of the Victoria regia Water Lily as Imperial Theatre

The Victoria regia was discovered in British Guiana in 1837, and for over ten years explorers and scientists tried different methods to transport viable seeds back to England. When the seeds were finally on British soil, no one could grow them successfully except Joseph Paxton, the head gardener for the Duke of Devonshire. Paxton built a special glass house at Chatsworth estate to mimic the tropical climate the Amazonian lily required, and created an innovative tank that was heated with coal and fitted with an apparatus to gently keep the water moving, replicating freshwater rivers. The œvegetable wonder, as it came to be known, had floating leaves measuring up to 6 feet in diameter and was considered truly magnificent. To reveal the successful growth of the œqueen of aquatics to the public, Paxton dressed his seven-year-old daughter Annie in a fairy costume, dimmed the lights, and set her on the largest of the floating leaves. She stood there and created a theatrical tableau that transfixed all who saw it. This performance, which I am calling a œbotanical-theatrical event, is the site of my examination. Drawing on ecocritical perspectives and performance studies, I argue that this presentation was coded with social and political messaging that reinforced English national identity and imperial intentions. The lily was a signifier of the exotic, while the child was a signifier of the domestic. This botanical-theatrical event was deeply significant because it embodied the social and political views of the time, acting out the British Empire being œon top of, and supported by, the œuncivilized world. The water lily had been taken from its natural habitat, transported across the ocean and grown in a manipulated environment. It became a specimen/spectacle. The little girl had been taken out of her natural habitat, dressed as another creature and displayed on the floating leaf. She also became a specimen/spectacle. The interaction between these two organisms in this theatrical exhibition synthesized a physical representation of Imperialism that was powerful to the people of the time because of the social and political system in which they lived.

One of the Governments strategic objectives, as reflected in the white paper on National Transport Policy, is to promote the use of public transport with the goal of achieving a ratio of 80:20 between public transport and private car usage, as a long term vision. This is no easy task and in order to achieve this goal, an in depth analysis of the current transport situation is required. The structure and land-use patterns of most of the South African cities have forced the residents to be predominantly dependent on private transport, resulting in high car ownerships. Over the years, this has caused the traffic on the major links connecting the suburban areas leading to the city centres to be very high and some of them have already approached forced flow conditions during morning and evening peak periods / D

Perceptions of young Indian adolescents in Chatsworth, towards HIV and AIDS

Text in English / Aim: The aim of this study was to explore the perceptions’ of young Indian adolescents in Chatsworth, towards HIV and AIDS. Methods: An interpretative phenomenological analysis design was used. The participants were selected using judgemental purposive sampling. Nine participants were interviewed. The sample size was determined by data saturation. Data was collected through individual interviews guided by an interview schedule. The interpretative phenomenological analysis framework for data analysis was used for data analysis. Results: The study revealed that participants were well informed about HIV and AIDS. Participants reported disinterest in HIV prevention programmes due to inundation with repetitive information; disinterested attitudes of facilitators of these programme as well as fear of social stigmatisation. The misconceptions that were highlighted were related to very little personal contact with people living with HIV and AIDS. Conclusions and Recommendations: These findings have revealed that there is a need for a revision in HIV/AIDS prevention programme. The HIV/AIDS school programmes should be contextual relevant to learners from diverse backgrounds and communities. / Health Studies / M.A. (Nursing Science)
