The role of the department of correctional services in the rehabilitation of child molesters

Jonker, Dina Carolina 11 1900 (has links)
This report is the result of a literature study and questionnaire which gave insight on the role of Department of Correctional Services in the rehabilitation of child molesters. Correctional Services has adopted a new approach, where offenders need to change their negative behavior and be rehabilitated. Corrections have a societal responsibility towards the community to guide the offender on his rehabilitation path. This study was conducted to give a better understanding of rehabilitation to child molesters. It seems that child molesters will re-offend if they are not included in a thorough treatment programme. The purpose of this research is to determine if the Department of Correctional Services delivers on its legal and social responsibility towards the rehabilitation of child molesters. It is evaluated against international benchmarks. In this study the researcher gathered information on the profile of a child molester, the programmes currently available in Correctional Services, and also the involvement of the community in this process. Corrections cannot work alone, and needs the help of the community and leaders in the community to assist it in this process. Correctional Services faces many challenges in order to succeed in the rehabilitation of offenders. Currently there is a shortage of social workers and psychologists in the Department of Correctional Services, and the Department cannot, therefore, fully succeed in its rehabilitative role. Another aspect is that treatment is voluntary, and offenders can decide if they want to become involved or not. Only if the judge decides that the offender must be included in therapy, can he be forced to do so. / Penology / M.A. (Penology)

L'apport des personnages virtuels simulant différentes dispositions affectives à l'évaluation des intérêts sexuels

Dennis, Elissa 04 1900 (has links)
Penile plethysmography is considered the most objective method to assess adult men's sexual interests. However, a growing number of researchers underline the poor correspondence between the stimuli used during this type of assessment and reality. It is proposed to try to overcome this issue by using computer generated virtual characters that present a variety of affective dispositions during plethysmographic assessments. These stimuli have never been used in the assessment of child molesters' sexual interests. This thesis is composed of two articles that aim at supporting the use of this type of stimuli during plethysmographic assessments. In order to reach this goal, men who have or not engaged in sexual contact with children were recruited so that they could be compared. A first empirical study is bipartite. On one hand, it aims to determine in a student sample whether the affective dispositions simulated by the virtual characters represent what was intended. Its second goal is to determine the ability of the charcarters to generate a sexual arousal profile representative of non-deviant men. The second experimental study focuses on comparing profiles of erectile responses recorded to the virtual characters and determining their ability to discriminate individuals according to their group membership. Overall, results support the use of these stimuli during plethysmographic assessments. They demonstrate that the virtual characters simulate intended affective dispositions as well as their ability to generate profiles of sexual arousal and deviance differentials representative of group membership. This research project presents the advantages of using virtual characters that simulate varying affective dispositions in the assessment of child molesters' sexual interests and proposes interesting avenues in terms of assessment and treatment with this population.

Mental health service provision in South Africa and women’s sexual violations against children

Papakyriakou, Beba 11 1900 (has links)
Mental health services in South Africa and the field of psychology are not keeping up with the changed landscape of child sexual abuse that includes women who perpetrate these violations. New laws have not made a massive impact on out of control behaviours, while the paucity of mental health services for women who sexually violate children is a significant failing in mental health service provision. Exploratory, descriptive research approached the topic from the perspective of the psychology of healing rather than the psychology of wrongdoing. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with 38 professionals in relevant fields, purposefully selected in four provinces in South Africa that revealed a lack of knowledge, resources, and funding, as well as gaps in curricula. Some practitioners were willing to work with women who sexually violate children, while others were either unwilling or reluctant to do so for various reasons. Women who sexually violate children are typically not mentally ill but could have mental disorders and lives dominated by dysfunction and trauma. Data were analysed utilising Attride- Stirling’s (2001) thematic networks, while Gannon, Rose, and Ward’s (2008) descriptive model of female sexual offending (DMFSO) provided the theoretical framework. Recommendations include establishing online services to aid perpetrator disclosure and therapeutic interventions, providing individual psychotherapeutic interventions to uncover more than recent trauma, directing donor funding to sex offender programmes, networking among service providers including government agencies, and training those within the mental health services environment and the criminal justice system. Furthermore, mental health and relevant medical practitioners need to ensure comfort with their sexuality and to resolve their psychological blind spots before offering psychotherapeutic interventions to women who sexually violate children. / Psychology / Ph. Understanding why male juveniles perpetrate: An exploratory study

O'Sullivan, Debbie Lee 01 January 2005 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of why social workers believe a male juvenile would commit a sexual abuse act toward another child and how this juvenile should be understood within the social services system and society. Social workers believe interventions are needed once the abuse has occurred.

Trottier, Dominique 09 1900 (has links)
Penile plethysmography is considered to be the most rigorous method for sexual interest assessment. The instrument could however benefit from improvements in terms of its ecological validity and vulnerability to faking attempts. This tool also faces ethical and legal constraints related to the presentation of stimuli depicting human subjects to entice sexual arousal. This doctoral thesis seeks to address penile plethysmography’s shortcomings by combining it with computer-generated stimuli presented in virtual immersion as well as eye-tracking devices. A first empirical study was conducted to determine whether the presentation of computer-generated stimuli in virtual immersion is preferable to the auditory modality currently being used. Erectile responses from child molesters and men without sexual deviances were recorded and the ability of both modalities to generate sexual arousal profiles and deviance differentials indicative of sexual interests were compared. In a second experimental study, eye-movements were explored in an attempt to identify the presence of cognitive strategies responsible for erectile inhibition during the plethysmographic procedure. Erectile responses and eye-movements of men without criminal records were recorded when viewing stimuli under three different conditions, including an erectile inhibition task. Overall, results show that the presentation of computer-generated stimuli in virtual immersion generates sexual arousal profiles and deviance differentials, which allow significantly higher classification accuracy and discriminant performance than the auditory modality. Results also highlight the possibility, through eye-movement analyses, to identify an ocular signature specific to the use of cognitive strategies for erectile inhibition, which is characterized by a partial avoidance of the sexual content and a general deceleration of the visual exploration process. This project exposes the benefits inherent to the presentation of computer-generated stimuli in virtual immersion and the use of eye-tracking devices for penile plethysmography assessments and supports the progressive implementation of this modality in clinical settings.
