The child welfare response to domestic violence : exploring the concurrence between the literature, best practice guidelines and worker perception in the Ministry for Children and Family Development

DeGeer, Ian G. 05 1900 (has links)
Increasingly; child welfare authorities have become involved with families where domestic violence is an issue. This has been the result of improved understanding of the impact of witnessing domestic violence on children. However, child welfare has been criticized for the oppressive nature of the interventions with families where domestic violence has occurred. Critics have argued that an absence of understanding about domestic violence by social workers in child welfare has resulted in oppressive practice towards women and children. This study explored the perceptions of social workers in British Columbia's Ministry for Children and Family Development - South Fraser Region about the barriers to best practice in cases of domestic violence. An extensive literature review revealed eight barriers to best practice that contradict current best practice guidelines for cases of domestic violence. The findings of this study revealed that social workers identified that similar barriers to best practice exist in the South Fraser Region, thereby confirming the concerns in the literature. The use of factor analysis revealed that social workers are attempting to work with non-offending parents in amore supportive manner, but there continue to be systemic problems associated with child welfare services that impede workers ability to practice in a non-oppressive manner. Recommendations for improvement of service provision are outlined and discussed.

Specialized worker training related to child sexual abuse custodyaccess investigations

Gentile, Sonia. January 2000 (has links)
In this paper the researcher discusses the importance of specialized training for workers in child welfare who are responding to allegations of child sexual abuse in the context of custody/access disputes. The researcher has implemented an experimental design involving two matched groups of staff, equally sized, from an Ontario child welfare agency. Participants were requested to complete a pre-test and post-test which measured the priority assigned to a set of fictitious scenarios developed for the project. A training session was offered to the experimental group prior to the post-test. / The outcome data suggests that the training affected the coding which members of the experimental group applied to scenarios. The experimental group tended to consider dynamics related to the issue of custody/access when assessing the priority of response time given to a referral. The control group evidenced no consideration of such dynamics. / The researcher has included a number of recommendations within the analysis section so that future applications of similar studies may be improved. The conclusion of this study clearly states that adequate worker training is essential in order that objective, reliable, and competent service is available to child welfare clients.

Statutory interventions of social workers in the Amathole District

Kobese, Nozodwa January 2016 (has links)
The issues about child protection have become a global concern. With the increase in cases of child abuse, neglect and mal-treatment, this study sought to address such issues in the South African context. The government through the Department of Social Development introduced various statutory requirements to ensure the protection of vulnerable children in South Africa. Through the use of a qualitative approach, this study investigated the duties of social workers working within statutory interventions to ensure the safety of abused and neglected children in two distinct areas in Amathole District, Eastern Cape. Semi-structured interviews from the study indicated that, social workers play major roles to ensure that vulnerable children are catered for. Their duties which are guided by law have seen so many abused children being removed from their place of abuse to better places of safety. However, despite the vigorous work done by social workers, statutory interventions still faces many challenges which make them ineffective.

Organisering as bestuurstaak van die koshuisopvoeder in kindersorgskole

Boshoff, Gerhardt Marius 16 July 2014 (has links)
M.Ed. / The education of pedagogically neglected children in a residential situation, as found at child care schools, implies a particular educational task. It must be carried out in a conscientious professional manner it any virtuous accomplishment can be expected. All children in child care schools are cared for residentially. These children are removed from their homes or other torms of care without any choice and are then placed in the total care ot the child care school. The hostel in the child care school forms the core ot the school and is therefore the "home" ot these neglected children. As manager ot the child care school hostel the hostel educator has a comprehensive and complex task. This is realized when he has to lead and accompany pupils pedagogically towards adulthood in the child care school hostel environment. As professional leader the senior hostel educator must accomodate managerial tasks such as planning, organizing, guidance and control. In this research the importance ot organizing as the major management task ot the hostel educator in a child care school is stressed. Aspects that are connected with organizing are also stressed as they create structure on the micro level in the child care school hostel. In addition to this there is a normal relationship within the structure that adds to the achieving ot preset goals in the hostel. This research furthermore, stresses the managerial tasks which are expected of the hostel educator, namely to implement an inviting climate in the hostel, to develop a system of leadership and to create inviting discipline through effective organizing. This research is underpinned by the fact that the author was in the unique position of approaching the subject trilaterally : being in a hostel as a schoolboy for a number of years; as a hostel educator (presently as member of the managerial team of a child care school he is responsible for a hostel) and as a professional educator. (The personal experience and scientific facts melt together into a unit that gives one an intimate look into the daily life of the hostel educator and his particular challenges) . The importance of organizing as managerial task of the hostel educator as leader in the child care school hostel must be seen in the light of the need for well-equipped, able and diligent hostel educators.
