An investigation of the relationship between Christian religious ideology and identity achievement in selected university studentsParker, Carl Edward 28 April 1978 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine whether there is a
relationship between identity achievement and Christian religious
ideology in selected university students attending Oregon State
University.
The sample consisted of two hundred and forty-nine students
enrolled during the winter quarter 1978 in Psychology and Education
courses. The respondents were given a Self Descriptive Inventory
consisting of a religious scale (devised by the investigator), the
Henry-Sims Identity Scale and Rosenberg's self-esteem scale. Each
student was given a questionnaire (consisting of ninety-one responses
to complete. The responses were scored and put on keypunched
cards and analyzed on Cyber #3 Network Operating System (NOS) for
the statistical package for the social sciences.
Six hypotheses related to identity achievement and Christian
religious ideology were tested, using a step wise multiple regression
analysis (which yields a correlation coefficient), analysis of variance
and Newman Keuls for comparisons which were made between sex,
age, religious affiliations and academic majors. The .05 level of
confidence was chosen for all statistical analysis.
The following null hypotheses were examined:
1. There is no significant relationship between identity achievement
and Christian religious ideology. (Rejected)
2. There is no significant relationship between ego career and
Christian religious ideology. (Rejected)
3. There is no significant relationship between ego group and
Christian religious ideology. (Rejected)
4. There is no significant relationship between ego self and
Christian religious ideology. (Retained)
5. There is no significant relationship between ego effect and
Christian religious ideology. (Retained)
6. There is no significant relationship between self esteem and
Christian religious ideology. (Retained)
The author concluded that there is a relationship between certain
aspects of Christian religious ideology and identity achievement
and two of its subfactors. This conclusion was made as a result of
rejecting three null hypotheses: practice, experience and intrinsic
dimensions correlated significantly (P < . 05) with identity achievement;
ego career was correlated significantly (P < . 05) with knowledge
and practice; and ego group correlated significantly with experience
(P < . 05), practice (P < . 05), and belief (P < . 05).
The author recommended a replication of this study using a
personal interview in conjunction with the instruments in this study
for analysis and comparison. Another important recommendation is
the usage of an open-ended religious questionnaire which would include
diverse religious groups. These two recommendations were made
with the thought that they might prove helpful in further understanding
the impact of a religious ideology in the life of the young person.
This study must be considered with the following limitations:
1. The extent to which the instruments used accurately measure
what they purport to measure may have a limiting influence on
the study.
2. The study is limited to students who identify themselves as
Christians.
3. Uncontrolled variables as motivation, interest, present emotional
state, and other extraneous variables.
4. Limited to Oregon State University's students enrolled in
Psychology courses 201, 202, and 314 and Education 309A,
311A and 311C classes.
5. Limited to students who are from 17 to 24 years of age. / Graduation date: 1978

This work is an investigation of the influence of academic philosophy on non-academics in the Early Modern period (the 16th and 17th centuries). The first chapter will use Craig’s Similarity Thesis to examine Early Modern philosophy in general, Philosophy of Science and Theology and how they interacted to elevate human reason to the level of divine certainty. The second chapter will draw on Dear’s description of the changing status of mathematics in academia in the Early Modern period. This second chapter will draw the importance and divine relevance of rationality as developed in the first chapter into the discussion to further explore the relationships between science, metaphysics, mathematics and the divine. Contemporary philosophers, wary of the vaulted metaphysical systems proposed by Enlightenment thinkers, have explored alternative avenues of doing philosophy. Unfortunately, these "new" philosophical systems often neglect their roots in ancient philosophical practice. The purpose of this thesis is to textually ascertain the ancient concept of philosophy as a way of life in the contemporary philosophical work of Simone Weil. This connection is demonstrated in two distinct yet related ways. The practical
pedagogy demonstrated through biographical work and student lecture notes provide a distinct vision of her life's bent toward practical philosophy. In addition, her Notebooks, read in light of Pierre Hadot's interpretation of Marcus Aurelius' Meditations, demonstrate the pervasiveness of this way of life in her personal textual engagement. In Weil, therefore, we find an important contemporary instance of continuing and reinterpreting the ancient philosophical practice where she finds her philosophical origin.

He made enormous contributions to the discussion of theism, including particularly neoclassical theism, which not only has a great influence on the research upon the fields of theology and philosophy of religion, but also attracts the attention from some scholars who have participated in Christian-Confucian dialogue. / Hartshorne does not believe that God and nature are entirely separate. On the contrary, he claims that there are various relationships between them. Inevitably, his theism and cosmology have certain implications on how to rigorously understand the moral action. We can thus systematically elucidate the significance of his thoughts based on his theism and cosmology for ethics. / The dialogues between process thought and Confucianism by far mainly focus on ontology and cosmology. A systematic study of Hartshorne's ethics may further help us to review critically and explore constructively the ethical aspect of the dialogue between process thought and Confucianism. This dialogical study of the ethics of Hartshorne and Confucianism will primarily focus on two topics. First, Hartshorne has his own ideas on ecological ethics, which is an important branch of process theology as well as an area which a dialogical study of Hartshorne and Confucianism is feasible and called for. The present study will show that research on Hartshorne’s ethics may shed light on the construction of Confucian-ecological ethics, and the dialogue between the ethics of Hartshorne and of Confucianism may facilitate the development of ecological ethics. Second, the recent debate in Chinese academia about "father and son concealing each other" reflects to a certain extent the limitation within the "hierarchical love" of Confucian ethics in modern life. Hartshorne may provide a helpful and promising approach to avoid or overcome some of the drawbacks on the "hierarchical love" in Confucian ethics.
