Estudo do efeito do não preenchimento das juntas verticais e eficiência do graute na resistência da alvenaria estrutural de blocos cerâmicos / Study of the effect of unfilled vertical joints and efficiency of grout in the strength of structural masonry of clay bricks

Larissa de Almeida Miranda 31 October 2012 (has links)
In the context of growth of structural masonry construction process, it highlight the use of the ceramic block consolidated with the creation of its specific standard of design, execution and control, the NBR 15812, Parts 1 and 2 (ABNT, 2010). Since the propagation of structural masonry, changes have occurred in the construction techniques, such as don\'t fill the vertical joints of the masonry wall. Another technique that has been used is the grouted masonry. However, it is not yet established if the unfilled vertical joints compromise the performance of masonry or which strength is necessary to the grout to increase the strength of the masonry. Therewith, the paper aims to contribute to the study of unfilled vertical joints by analyzing its effect on compressive strength and shear strength of small walls and also investigate the influence of grout in prisms and small walls under compression. With the analysis of the results we can conclude that do not fill the vertical joints had no influence on the values of compressive strength and elastic modulus of the small walls tested. However, it significantly affects the results of the diagonal compression test to evaluate shear strength, despite the shear elastic modulus being considered equivalent. The results of the preliminary study in prisms showed that the average of the compressive strength in relation to the gross area of the grouted prism using the Grout A and the Grout C were equivalent to the average of hollow prism. Thus, small walls and prisms with the Grout A were made. It can be concluded with the results of grouted small walls that there was a significant increase in compressive strength with respect to the gross area, but in relation to the net area, were similar to the hollow small wall. Therefore the increase in the compressive strength in a small wall is proportional to the gain of the area given by the grout, unlike the behavior observed in the prisms.

The mixtures were obtained using the technique of fractional factorial design 33-1 for the design and analysis of experiments. For each factor, three levels were selected: CBW content (10, 20 and 30 wt. % of cement), water-to-cement ratio of 0.37, 0.45 and 0.55, and aggregate-to-cement ratio of 2.36, 3.64 and 4.70. The waste was characterized to evaluate their potential as a pozzolana. Fresh properties (consistency) and hardened (compressive strength at various ages, voids index, water absorption and density) were measured. Characterizations of microstructure and thermal using SEM / EDS and DTA / TG were performed to correlate the effect of waste content on the microstructure and properties of the hardened concrete. The waste presents properties adequate to be used as a pozzolan material. Consistency index decreases with the incorporation of the CBW, but is still possible to obtain concrete with adequate workability. For properties in the hardened concrete, the results show that the compressive strength increases with the increase of CBW content as an addition for concretes of Portland cement. Microstructural characterization reveals that the waste contributes to develop a more homogeneous microstructure with fewer pores and cracks when compared to concretes without waste. There is evidences that metakaolin contained in the waste contributes with the hydration reactions, consuming calcium hydroxide and producing more calcium silicate gel and hydrated phases, which keeps the aggregates more cohesive in the concrete microstructure. These microstructural characteristics improve the mechanical properties and durability of concrete.

Otherwise, because its making process characteristic, the Ceramic Industry can tolerate the presence of this wastes as raw material. This study has as object to confirm the use of the sewage sluge in the Ceramic Industry like a sustentable alternative for its disposal. Futhermore, this study quests to evaluate the maximum proportion for incorporation of sludge wich result in technically and enviromentally suitable bricks. For found this proportion, the research consisted of (1) making of bricks in full scale, adde up 0%, 5%,10%, 15%, 20%, 25%,30%, 35% e 40% sludge, with size 220x105x45 mm, hand-molded by rammer and baked by industrial kiln; and (2) tecnical and enviromental evaluation of this bricks, according to Brazilian norms. The raw material uses were two distinct clays come from Goianinha/RN and sewage comes from a septic system tank and pumped into tank vehicle, of Natal/RN. The technical evaluation allowed to conclude the addiotion of the sludge brings about signifcant lost of mass and the water absorption grew up according to increase of sludge: every sludge-amended clay bricks absorved more water than control group. Thus, the compressive strength was signicantly decreased because the increase of sludge: bricks with 5% sludge added lost 45% of strength achieved at control group; the bricks made with 10 and 20% lost almost 70% of bigger strength. With up to 25% sludge added to the bricks, the streght decreased over 90%. Concerning heavy metal leaching, the two maximum proportion wich have tecnical approval, it means bricks sludge added with 15 and 20%, can say there is no risk of enviromental contamination using those bricks. This way, in this work context, it can to conclude the maximum proportion atends the technical and enviromental criterion is 20% / A disposi??o final adequada do lodo de esgoto constitui um problema crescente enfrentado pelos prestadores de servi?os de saneamento.

Etude des caractéristiques d'un porogène d'origine biosourcée et mécanismes mis en oeuvre pour l'obtention d'une brique de construction micro-poreuse à haute performance thermique et mécanique / Study of the characteristics of a biosourced porous material and mechanisms used to obtain a micro porous building brick with high thermal and mechanical properties

Bories, Cécile 29 January 2015 (has links)
The objective of this work is to develop new clay bricks with biobased pore-forming agents in order to obtain materials with high thermal performance. The raw materials, clay and biomass, were first characterized individually. The use of agricultural by-products (wheat straw, sunflower seed cake and olive stone flour) as pore-forming agents for the production of porous clay bricks was then studied. The benefits of the addition of biobased components that increase the porosity and the thermal resistance was demonstrated even if it results in a decrease of mechanical properties. However, problems of plasticity causing trouble during the extrusion of samples were identified. After optimizing the sand rate, the impact of the particle size of the biomass and the rate of incorporation were assessed. A maximum porosity of 34.4%, made up of macropores was obtained under optimal experimental conditions, leading to a thermal conductivity of 0.45 W/m.K, representing a decrease of 15 % compared to the reference brick without additive. In order to improve the properties of the resulting material, it was considered to create microporosity, thanks to the chemical modification of the vegetable materials that will be degraded during the firing process. For this, the agricultural by-products were modified either by direct impregnation of carbonates or by grafting of new chemical moieties (carbonate or ester). These modified matters were then incorporated into the clay formulation and the properties of the obtained bricks were measured (physical, mechanical and thermal ones). Finally, the potential environmental impact of the modified samples containing additives was studied through a Life Cycle Assessment. Different scenarios, simple (with one pore-forming agent) or combined (with a crude vegetable agent and a synthesized one) were compared with the ReCiPe method. The steps from the process with the most significant impacts were highlighted. It was also shown that the choice of the functional unit could radically alter the conclusions of the study.

In this sense, given the need to preserve the environment and natural resources for future generations, the industry needs to improve the environmental performance of its operations chain. In order to achieve effective improvements by the actions developed by the sector, these actions need to be based on information about the environmental performance that are objective and verifiable. One of the methods that allow the collection of environmental information is Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), which is one of the main tools of environmental impact assessment for the lifecycle of products and systems. The LCA allows to evaluate the impacts of raw material extraction, manufacturing process, use and disposalt. In this context, a study of the manufacturing process of structural ceramic blocks (cradle to factory gate) was conducted, aiming to analyze its main impacts and processes that contribute most to these environmental impacts. To conduct this study data collection was performed in two plants located in the State of São Paulo. Based on data collected locally and on the international database Ecoinvent®, the life cycle inventory (LCI) was drawn up with the necessary adaptations to represent the local context. Life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) was carried out using the following methods: CML 2002, Edip 97, USEtox and IPCC 2013. Based on the LCIA results, it was possible to identify the processes that contributed to each of the impacy categories analyzed, with the electricity being the process that most contributed to all categories. But the fuel used in the burning of the blocks, in turn, did not generate significant environmental impacts due to factories studied using biomass. Therefore, this study allowed to evaluate the magnitude and importance of the environmental impacts generated by the manufacture of ceramic bricks and also to characterize the environmental performance of ceramic bricks based on LCA.

Behaviour Of FRP Strengthened Masonry In Compression And Shear

Pavan, G S 03 1900 (has links) (PDF)
Masonry structures constitute a significant portion of building stock worldwide. Seismic performance of unreinforced masonry has been far from satisfactory. Masonry is purported to be a major source of hazard during earthquakes by reconnaissance surveys conducted aftermath of an earthquake. Reasons for the poor performance of masonry structures are more than one namely lack of deformational capacity, poor tensile strength & lack of earthquake resistance features coupled with poor quality control and large variation in strength of materials employed. Fibre Reinforced Plastic (FRP) composites have emerged as an efficient strengthening technique for reinforced concrete structures over the past two decades. Present thesis is focused towards analysing the behaviour of Fibre Reinforced Plastic (FRP) strengthened masonry under axial compression and in-plane shear loading. Determination of in-planes hear resistance of large masonry panels requires tremendous effort in terms of cost, labour and time. Masonry assemblages like prisms and triplets that represent the state of stress present in masonry walls and masonry in-fills when under the action of in-planes hear forces present an alternative option for research and analysis purposes. Hence, present research is focused towards analysing the performance of FRP strengthened masonry assemblages and unreinforced masonry assemblages. Chapter1 provides a brief review on the behaviour of masonry shear walls and masonry in-fills under the action of in-plane shear forces in addition to the performance of masonry structures during past earthquakes. Review of available literature on FRP confinement of masonry prisms with bed joints inclined from 00 to 900 to the loading axis under axial compression, analytical models available for FRP confined concrete, shear strength of masonry triplets attached with FRP is presented. Chapter 2 primarily focuses on determining the various properties of the materials involved in this research investigation. Test procedure and results of the tests conducted to determine the mechanical and related properties of the materials involved are presented. Elastic properties and stress-strain response of burnt clay brick, mortar and FRP laminates are presented. Studies conducted on behaviour of GFRP confined masonry prisms under monotonic axial compression are included in Chapter 3. The study comprised of testing masonry prisms, both unconfined and FRP confined masonry prisms under axial compression. Stretcher bond and English bond prisms, with bed joints normal and parallel to loading axis are included in this study. Two grades of GFRP,360g/m2 and 600 g/m2 are employed to confine masonry prisms. The experimental program involved masonry prism types that accounted for variations in masonry bonding pattern, bed joint inclination to the loading axis and grade of GFRP. Review of the available analytical models predicting compressive strength of FRP confined masonry prism is presented. Available models for FRP confinement of masonry are re-calibrated using the present experimental data generating new coefficients for the already existing model to develop new expression for predicting the compressive strength of FRP confined prisms. In addition to the prism types mentioned earlier, behaviour of unconfined and GFRP confined stretcher bond prisms with bed joints inclined at 300, 450 & 600 to the loading axis are further investigated. Chapter 4 primarily deals with the shear strength and deformational capacity of masonry triplets that represent joint shear failure in masonry. An experimental program involving masonry triplets attached with different types of FRP(GFRP and CFRP), grade of FRP, percentage area covered by FRP and reinforcement pattern is executed. This exercise determined the influence of these parameters over the enhancement achieved in terms of shear strength and ultimate displacement. Results of tests conducted on stretcher bond prisms presented in chapter 3 and results of tests on shear triplets presented in this chapter are combined to study the interaction between shear and normal stresses acting along the masonry bed joint at different angles of inclination. The thesis culminated with chapter 5 as concluding remarks highlighting the salient Information pertaining to the behaviour of FRP strengthened masonry under axial compression and in-plane shear loading obtained as an outcome of the research conducted as a part of this thesis.
