M.A. (Sociology) / The increasing deployment of clothing factories in the border industrial areas, has resulted in an increase in the demand for black female labour in this industry. This need, together with a sharp decline in the number of black male employees in the clothing industry, traditionally employed in all functional levels, forced employees to invest in black female labour on a large scale. It is practice to select first level supervisory staff from the higher operator levels, but a shortage of male workers in these positions created opportunities for black female operators to fulfil the need for supervisory staff. This however resulted in complications for both black women and employers, since factors emerged that could affect the black woman's achievement orientation. The objective of this research is to determine a job profile for the black woman in terms of her achievement orientation and also to investigate other variables that relate to her job profile and achievement orientation. Research conducted in this field on the European woman's achievement orientation, provided a framework for an explorative and qualitative research study on the achievement orientation of 15 non-supervisory and 15 supervisory black women. In order to gather sufficient information, interview guides were developed as an aid to conducting personal interviews with the sample group. A similar method was applied in investigating the attitude towards black female supervision, of 15 black male supervisors and 4 employers. From the case studies, three job profiles were distinguished namely a high achievement/high economical, a moderate achievement/moderate economical and a non-achievement/low economical orientated profile. For purposes of analysis the three profiles were reduced to two, namely an achievement/economical and a non-achievement/low economical orientated profile.

Argumentamos que os processos que explicam essa inserção, suas relações de trabalho e as próprias oficinas de costura nas quais trabalham os migrantes bolivianos e bolivianas não são os mesmos nos quais se inserem as costureiras brasileiras e argentinas. A pesquisa baseou-se em narrativas de vida desses migrantes sobre os seus percursos sócio espaciais e laborais anteriores e sua experiência social na indústria de confecção das cidades de destino. As entrevistas foram realizadas nos municípios de São Paulo, no Brasil, e Cochabamba, Escoma, La Paz e El Alto, na Bolívia, com bolivianos e bolivianas que, em algum momento de suas vidas, trabalharam na indústria de confecção das cidades de São Paulo e/ou Buenos Aires. A partir das narrativas, ao invés da imagem, comumente associada a essa inserção laboral, de migrantes empobrecidos que saem de suas regiões de origem sem perspectivas e, na cidade de destino, inserem-se no mercado de trabalho das oficinas de costura, encontramos trabalhadores que saem da Bolívia com um trabalho garantido na cidade de destino, que pode ser São Paulo ou Buenos Aires. Nesse sentido, invés de projetos migratórios que culminam com a inserção na indústria de confecção, encontramos "projetos costura" cuja migração, em geral, financiada (como um adiantamento) em parte ou completamente por seus futuros contratadores, é parte de um acordo de inserção laboral estabelecido na Bolívia / Abstract: In this thesis, we address the Bolivian insertion in São Paulo and Buenos Aires clothing industry from the hypothesis of ethnic economy. We argue that the social process that explain this insertion, and both the work relations and the work place in which Bolivian immigrants work are not the same of the Brazilian and Argentinean sewers. The empirical research is based on life narratives of Bolivian immigrants about, on one hand, their socio-spatial pathways and previous working life, and, on another hand, their social experience in the clothing industry of their host cities. The interviews were held in the cities of São Paulo, in Brazil, and Cochabamba, La Paz, El Alto and Escoma (rural municipality of the Andean highlands) with Bolivians that, at some point in their lives, worked on São Paulo or Buenos Aires clothing industry. Instead of the image commonly associated with this labor insertion, of impoverished migrants who leave their home regions and, at the host societies, fit into de labor market of sewing workshops, we have found immigrants that leave their homes at Bolivia with a guaranteed work at São Paulo or Buenos Aires. In this sense, rather migration projects culminating in the clothing industry, we have found "sewing projects", with migration as part of a work agreement held in Bolívia / Doutorado / Sociologia / Doutora em Sociologia

El Sindicato de las Costureras 19 de Septiembre : the impact of the 1985 Mexico City earthquake on social process

The paper traces out the relationships between three sets of actors--workers, factory owners, and government--before, during and after the 1985 Mexico City earthquake, and places those relationships in the broader context of Mexico's political and economic development, as well as the spatial structure of Mexico City and the garment district. The paper concludes that although victims respond to the crisis by attempting to restore and repair previous social and physical conditions, as social theory predicts, disasters have different effects on different classes of people, who respond according to their needs, vulnerabilities, perceptions, values, and their socially prescribed powers. Where there is no consensus among social classes as to what the normal or desirable social system is or ought to be, conflict between sectors of the population, which was embedded in the social and spatial system, takes a new form as a result of new conditions caused by the disaster.

An outcomes evaluation study of the South African clothing and textile workers union bursary programme

Thesis (MDF)--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / In 1997, SACTWU established the SACTWU Educational Trust, which includes the SACTWU bursary programme in aid of tertiary education. In honour of the launch of the trust, the union released a statement, which clarifies the intentions of the organisational decision to focus its resources on education. The General Secretary of SACTWU at the time, Jabo Ngcobo, emphasised the union’s acknowledgement of education as the only tool that can arm people with the required knowledge to make independent decisions. In so doing, education empowers ordinary citizens from the lowest economic ranks, to become confident citizens who are prepared to access the opportunities present in the democratic South Africa. SACTWU remains committed to the priority of the organisation, which is to uplift the working class members of the clothing and textile industry. Hence, in their pursuit of this goal, they decided to extend their network of support to the families of their members. An interview with the National Bursary Officer, Ms. Lizzy Chetty, reveals that the focus of the union is primarily on tertiary education as this is the logical route to ensure that the union makes a direct contribution to the national economy in the short term. This is achieved through empowering previously disadvantaged citizens to become active participants in the economy. In addition, individual members of the union can be acknowledged and supported directly in this viable and easy manner. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the outcomes of the SACTWU bursary programme. The detailed analysis of the information outlined in Chapter 4 follows in Chapter 5 in order to reach a conclusion about the overall progress of the union’s programme (based on this study’s limited focus on the relevant years i.e. 2004, 2005 & 2006 and regions which include the Eastern Cape, Gauteng, Kwazulu-Natal and Western Cape).
