The three-in-one and the many: a study of Colin Gunton's trinitarian theology of modernity and post-modernity

Yu, Wen 20 November 2013 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to explore Gunton’s Trinitarian theology and its understanding of modernity and post-modernity. It will analyze the general characteristics and the model of relationship of Gunton’s theory of the Trinity, discuss the possibility of Gunton’s Trinitarian theology as a solution of the problems caused by modernity and post-modernity, and try to figure out the value and the difficulties of his thought, especially in the context of the modern and post-modern Chinese academic world in Mainland China. It contains six main chapters: Chapter 1 gives a brief definition of two important concepts: modernity/post-modernity and Trinity, and delimits the scope of the main topics of this thesis. Chapter 2 gives a detailed examination of Gunton’s analysis of modern cultural problems according to the following structure: modernity’s disengagement, the disappearance of the other, and the sickness of relatedness and the rootless will (the loss of meaning and truth). Chapter 3 moves in a different direction and discusses the three persons of the Trinity and analyzes the Trinitarian model in Gunton’s theological system. As a continuation of Chapter 2, Chapter 4 discusses how the Trinitarian theology can (and at what level it can) overcome the crises in modern and post-modern culture. Chapter 5 provides an overall evaluation of Gunton’s Trinitarian theology. Finally, chapter 6 provides some theological insights for the Chinese academic world which is concerned with the evaluation of modern and post-modern culture. In that chapter Trinitarian theology is able to be constructively involved in the reflection on and the transformation of the process of cultural life, and realizes a genuine dialogue between the ideas/faith of Christianity and the culture of modernity. Therefore, it is very significant to introduce Gunton's Trinitarian theology to the Mainland Chinese academics, and so it would be helpful to make a comprehensive and in-depth theological study which this dissertation seeks to accomplish

Reclaiming the Ungentlemanly Arts: The Global Origins of SOE and OSS

Linderman, Aaron 2012 May 1900 (has links)
Sir Colin McV. Gubbins, former director of Britain's Special Operations Executive (SOE), explained in 1966 to a Danish audience that it is much easier to pronounce a new organization than to actually create it. This dissertation examines the processes whereby SOE was created, including how its doctrine was formulated and subsequently disseminated, both to its own agents and to its American counterpart, the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). Traditional narratives, which imply that SOE had no precedents, fail to appreciate that Gubbins and his colleagues consciously looked to past and contemporary examples for inspiration. This dissertation follows Gubbins's career, examining his experience of unconventional warfare in the Allied Intervention in Russia, in Ireland during the Irish Revolution, and in India. To personal experience was added the experience of colleagues and the knowledge he gained by study of several other historical and contemporary conflicts. Pragmatically synthesizing this information, Gubbins authored two brief guides in 1939: the Art of Guerilla Warfare and the Partisan Leader's Handbook. In 1940 Gubbins joined the new SOE and was given charge of both operations and training, allowing his ideas to shape SOE's agents and form their thinking. Even before the entry of the United States into the Second World War, OSS turned to Britain for training in intelligence and sabotage. SOE played a substantial role in this process, propagating Gubbins's ideas even further. Although the Americans drew upon their own sources of inspiration as well, SOE and Gubbins's doctrines were significant, arguably central, to American thinking.

_______________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This dissertation is a critical investigation of the use of probabilistic methods to analyze scientific reasoning as proposed by Colin Howson and Peter Urbach in the book Scientific Reasoning – the Bayesian approach. In addition to the Bayesian approach of the two authors, both the criticisms addressed by them and the criticisms they have not taken into consideration are also presented. In order to allow a better understanding of the Bayesian approach, a contrast with the alternative theoretical approach elaborated by Deborah Mayo and known as error statistics is made. The dissertation contends that Bayesianism is still an important approach to investigate scientific reasoning, notwithstanding the fact that some criticisms still lack a coherent Bayesian response.

The London Novels of Colin MacInnes

Greene, Sarah Lee 05 1900 (has links)
The novels that compose Colin MacInnes's London trilogy, City_ of Spades, Absolute Beginners, and Mr. Love and Justice, are concerned with British society as it has evolved since World War II. By depicting certain "outsiders," MacInnes illustrates a basic cause of social unrest: the average Britisher is blind to societal changes resulting from the war. Most citizens mistreat the African immigrants, allow their children to be exploited by the few adults who realize the buying power of the postwar youth, and remain oblivious to crime, even among their own police force. Though the novels are social documentaries, they are also valuable as literature. MacInnes's exceptional powers of description, together with his facility with language in general, contribute to the trilogy's merit as a compelling exploration of the human condition.
