Municipal Solid Waste Collection Route Optimization Using Geospatial Techniques: A Case Study of Two Metropolitan Cities of Pakistan

Hina, Syeda January 2016 (has links)
The population growth in many urban cities and its activities in developing countries have resulted in an increased solid waste generation rate and waste management has become a global environmental issue. Routing of solid waste collection vehicles in developing countries like Pakistan poses a challenging task. In the process of solid waste management, collection and transportation play a leading role in waste collection and disposal, in which collection activities contributed the most to total cost for solid waste collection activities. Therefore, this study describes an attempt to design and develop an appropriate collection, transportation and disposal plan for the twin cities of Pakistan by using Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) techniques to determine the minimum cost/distance/time efficient collection paths for the transportation of the solid wastes to the landfill sites. In addition to this, identification of solid waste disposal sites and appropriately managing them is a challenging task to many developing countries and Pakistan is no exception to that. The existing landfill sites for the twin cities are not technically viable and environmentally acceptable and are thus damaging to the environment due to their location and the type of waste dumped. Therefore, the second aim of our study was to find out the suitable landfill sites for the twin cities and the study employed Multi-Criteria Evaluation (MCE) methods to combine necessary factors considered for landfill site selection for the twin cities. Hence, our present study has proved that GIS is a tool that can be used in integration with other techniques such as MCE for a identifying new landfill sites and it can help decision makers deal with real-world developmental and management issues. Finally, the study has developed a Wed-Based Decision Support System (DSS) via Application Programming Interface (API) which will help decision-makers to search for cost-effective alternatives and it can be operated by people who don’t have knowledge of GIS. The proposed study can be used as a decision support tool by the municipalities of the twin cities for efficient management and transportation of solid wastes to landfill sites, managing work schedules for workers, etc.

Experiences of research assistants in the administration of culturally tailored psychometric data-collection instruments in the Kgolo Mmogo project

Grobler, Andria 27 July 2010 (has links)
The adaptation of existing psychometric data data-collection instruments are is often utilized utilised in cross-cultural research as an alternative to the development of a new data data-collection instrument for a particular population, as the latter may not always be a viable option. However, given the relative novelty of this practice, several authors call for further research in this practicefield. The research assistants’ subjective experience in the administration of culturally tailored psychometric data data-collection instruments in a South African context was identified as a silence gap in the body of literature under review. The purpose of the study was to explore and describe the experience of research assistants during the administration of culturally tailored psychometric data data-collection instruments in order to broadly inform the practice of psychometric data data-collection instrument adaptation and cross-cultural assessment broadly. This study adhered to the meta-theoretical paradigm of Constructivism, while the methodological paradigm of qualitative research was adopted. Furthermore, a qualitative content analysis research design was employed, with document analysis of two focus focus-group discussions as a data data-collection strategy. The data was analysed by means of a theme analysis of the datea. The study found that the research assistants of the Kgolo Mmogo project experienced difficulty with regard to the language and comprehension of certain items of the culturally tailored psychometric data data-collection instruments. Their experiences also indicated the presence of culturally inappropriate questions, the presence of contradicting responses during the administration of the instruments, as well as the phenomenon of participants providing what they perceived to be the ‘correct’ response. Furthermore, the findings from this study suggested that the research assistants experienced the culturally tailored psychometric data data-collection instrument to have an informative and educational value. It seemed to informthat mothers felt informed about their children’s development, while it also served as a tool for HIV/AIDS education. Finally, the findings of this study suggested that the research assistants sometimes experienced that the assessment to placed an emotional strain on them. Their experience of emotional strain was related to difficulty with regard to role definition, as well as dealing with the often unrealistic expectations of the participants. The research assistants furthermore seemed to experience difficulty in relating to the interview-participant relationship. However, it seemed as if the research assistants’ experience of the participants’ spirituality rendered provided some relieve relief from the emotional strain they experienced during the assessments. Environmental Study Of Solid Waste Collection

Maimoun, Mousa Awad 01 January 2011 (has links)
The growing municipal solid waste generation rates have necessitated more efficient, optimized waste collection facilities. The majority of the US collection fleet is composed of diesel-fueled vehicles which contribute significant atmospheric emissions including greenhouse gases. In order to reduce emissions to the atmosphere, more collection agencies are investigating alternative fuel technologies such as natural gas, biofuels (bio-gas and bio-diesel), and hybrid electric technology. This research is an in-depth environmental analysis of potential alternative fuel technologies for waste collection vehicles. This study will evaluate the use of alternative fuels by waste collection vehicles. Lifecycle emissions, cost, fuel and energy consumption were evaluated for a wide range of fossil and bio-fuel technologies. Moreover, the energy consumption and the tail-pipe emissions of dieselfueled waste collection vehicles were estimated using MOVES 2010a software. Emission factors were calculated for a typical waste collection driving cycle as well as constant speed. Finally, the selection of fuel type by the waste collection industry requires consideration of environmental, security, financial, operational, and safety issues. In this study, a qualitative comparison between alternative fuels was performed; a multifactorial assessment of these factors was conducted taking into account the opinion of the waste collection industry of the importance of each factor. Liquid-petroleum fuels have higher life-cycle emissions compared to natural gas; however landfill natural gas has the lowest life-cycle emissions compared to all other fuel categories. Compressed natural gas waste collection vehicles have the lowest fuel cost per collection vehicle mile travel compared to other fuel categories. Moreover, the actual driving cycle of waste collection vehicles consists of repetitive stops and starts during waste collection; iv this generates more emissions than constant speed driving. Finally, the multifactorial assessment indicates that natural gas and landfill gas have better environmental, economical, and energy security performance than current liquid-petroleum fuels.

Adhoc routing based data collection application in wireless sensor networks

Pinjala, Mallikarjuna Rao January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Computing and Information Sciences / Gurdip Singh / Ad hoc based routing protocol is a reactive protocol to route messages between mobile nodes. It allows nodes to pass messages through their neighbors to nodes which they cannot directly communicate. It uses Route Request (RREQ) and Route Reply (RREP) messages for communication. Wireless sensor networks consist of tiny sensor motes with capabilities of sensing, computation and wireless communication. This project aims to implement data collector application to collect the temperature data from the set of wireless sensor devices located within a building, which will help in gathering the information by finding the route with minimum number of hops to reach destination and generates low message traffic by not encouraging the duplicate message within the network. Using this application, wireless devices can communicate effectively to provide the network information to the user. This system consists of a mobile wireless sensor device called base station which is connected to a PC to communicate and is the root of the network. It also consists of set of client sensor devices which are present in different parts of the building. This project has been evaluated by determining how well the ad hoc protocol performs by measuring the number of messages and time consumed in learning about the complete topology. This application will eventually find the path with minimum number of hops. Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is also used to monitor the sensor nodes remotely. This project was developed using nesC and C programming languages with TinyOS and UNIX based operating systems. It has been tested with a sufficient number of motes and evaluated based on the number of messages generated and number of hops traveled for each route request.

Design of a microcomputer "time interval board" for time interval statistical analysis of nuclear systems

Shuma, Mercy Violet, 1957- January 1988 (has links)
A microcomputer based hardware, the Time Interval Board, was designed and the software interface control program was developed. The board measures time intervals between consecutive pulses from a discriminator output. The data is stored in on-board 16K x 16 memory. The microcomputer empties and processes the data when the on-board memory is filled. Data collection continues until the preset collection period is finished or a forced end is initiated. During this period, control is passed between the hardware and the microcomputer via the interface circuit. The designed hardware is IBM PC compatible.

Development of sample collection methods and preliminary identifications of aphid salivary proteins

Lamabadusuriya, Manuja R. January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Chemistry / Christopher T. Culbertson / The study of aphid salivary secretome has practical importance on understanding interactions of aphids and their host plants. Around 250 species of aphids out of the identified 4000 aphid species are considered as serious pests. The experiments were performed with pea aphids (Acyrthosiphon pisum) that were feeding on bean plants (Vivia fabe). Pea aphids feed on plant phloem sap by probing their stylet into the sieve elements of the plant and secreting saliva for external digestion. In order to collect aphid salivary proteins from the secreted saliva, small scale and large scale sample collection methods were carried out. The small scale sample method was performed in microfluidic devices using 10-25 aphids. Aphids were able to feed on the artificial diet by probing through a stretched ParafilmTM and survived for 2-3 days in the microfluidic devices. The experiments proved that the aphid survival and feeding rate could be improved with the factors such as ventilation, light intensity and increasing diet volume. However it was difficult to collect sufficient amounts of aphid saliva for detection using small scale devices. The large scale sample collection method was performed by feeding 8000 aphids in large screened chamber for 24/48h. The collected salivary samples after undergone a concentration process was capable of collecting detectable aphid salivary secretions. The experimental conditions were adjusted to obtain optimized HPLC separations. Finally, LC/MS/MS followed by peptide sequence database searching were able to identify potential aphid salivary proteins.
