Perceptions of Sex Offenders on College Campuses

Harvey, Dayanne 01 August 2013 (has links)
As previous research has indicated, it is not a common societal norm that sex offenders generally have a negative connotation associated with them. These types of perceptions are held without considering the varying types of sexual offenders and sexual offenses. The legislation concerning sex offenders is broad, and therefore encompasses a lot of different offenses and people. Notification of these types of offenders varies by state, but all states require sex offenders to register. A number of colleges also require sex offenders to register before attending classes. This research focuses on student's perception of sex offenders on college campuses. That is, it questions how a student's awareness of sex offender legislation and presence affect their attitudes and perceptions about sex offenders. This thesis was intended to research the UCF student's awareness of sex offenders (legislation and presence) in relation how it effects their perception of sex offenders. Students were surveyed and asked questions based on their knowledge, awareness, and opinion of sex offenders in general and at the college level. Results collected suggested that informing students does make them more aware of sex offenders. However, the heightened awareness does not improve the negative perception student's held about sex offenders. After conducting the study, it is my hope that it will aid in better understanding student perceptions of sex offenders in terms of how effective notification and awareness are.

Environmental Sustainability On College Campuses: A Case Study of Claremont McKenna College

Patterson, Megan 01 January 2017 (has links)
This thesis observes sustainability on college campuses, specifically examining Claremont Mckenna College (CMC) as a case study. The question that this research paper explores is: how can we apply an integrative approach, one that integrates biophysical, economic, and social factors, to sustainability at CMC? The objectives of this paper are to (1) outline the history of sustainability on college campuses in the U.S. and define an integrative approach through a review of current literature; (2) explore CMC’s past and current sustainability initiatives from policies, reports, events, and interviews; (3) capture various community members’ perspectives on campus sustainability through surveys and interviews with students, faculty, and staff members; and (4) discuss the barriers and areas that need work at CMC and how an integrative approach can be applied as a solution. Thus, this thesis will track CMC’s progress in sustainability and give feedback as to the areas of success and areas that require work according to a working integrative framework.

Navigating Sex in College: A qualitative exploration of college students’ views on hookup culture and sexual assault

Duncan, Brittany January 2016 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Paul Gray / The prevalence of sexual assaults on college campuses has been gaining more attention in recent years. Through 16 undergraduate interviews with both male and female students, college students’ attitudes about hookup culture, the role of sexual consent, and issues that they see surrounding college campus sexual assault were explored. Students felt as though they were not responsible for their own decisions; failed to empathize with, and often objectified, fellow students; expressed a problematic distinction between sexual assault and rape; and voiced a pressure to act in accordance with traditional gender norms. There needs to be a shift in the way college students are introduced to college including frank conversation among students about the impact their actions can have on their peers and themselves. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2016. / Submitted to: Boston College. Jorge Machado Moreira e o Projeto da Cidade Universitária da Universidade do Brasil : 1949 - 1952

Postingher, Debora Carla January 2012 (has links)
Brazil was the pioneer in the consolidation of a school of modern architecture a style that that spread through a group of architects, among them Jorge Machado Moreira, who has appropriated the concepts of modernist Le Corbusier, translating them into work and seeking synthesis between the modern and local conditions. Finally, delves into three case studies designed by Jorge Machado Moreira on the island: the University Stadium (not running), the University Hospital and Center for Technology. Due to today’s topic, the study of University City University of Brazil represents an exemplary precedent in the latin american context, along with the City University of Venezuela and Mexico. This opens up the way for the research that follows, in view of the ideal “campus as synthesis and “testing of modern urbanism.

Effectiveness of an Educational Intervention on the Intimate Partner Violence Screening Behaviors of College-Based Health Care Providers

Hill, Sarah K 01 August 2016 (has links)
Over one million women in the United States are physically, sexually, or emotionally abused by a partner or former partner every year. Women between the ages of 18 and 34 are the most likely to experience intimate partner violence (IPV), with prevalence rates for that group double the overall national average. Although the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has recommended universal screening for all women of child-bearing age, compliance with this recommendation remains low. The present study examined the effectiveness of an asynchronous educational intervention to increase perceived knowledge, actual knowledge, and screening behaviors among 44 college-based health care providers. Data were collected using the Physician Readiness to Manage Intimate Partner Violence Survey (PREMIS). Results indicated that participation in the educational intervention did not have a significant effect on provider knowledge or screening behaviors. A positive trend was observed for perceived knowledge and knowledge regardless of treatment condition, but not for screening behaviors. The lack of significant findings may have been related to insufficient sample size and low power. Recruitment was challenging, despite multiple strategies and the offer of one free continuing education credit for all participants. Future research should explore how college health care providers prefer to engage in clinically informed research and whether IPV screening is viewed as an important clinical practice.
