NPAC FM Color Halftoning for the Indigo Press: Challenges and Solutions

FM halftoning is increasingly popular with traditional analog offset lithographic printing processes. There is a desire to offer this capability with digital presses based on electrophotographic printing (EP) technologies. However, the inherent instability of the EP process challenges the achievement of satisfactory print quality with dispersed-dot, aperiodic halftoning. The direct binary search (DBS) algorithm is widely considered to represent the gold standard of dispersed-dot, aperiodic halftone image quality. In this paper, we continue our previous efforts to adapt DBS to use with the Indigo liquid EP printing technology. We describe a complete color management pipeline for halftoning with a PARAWACS matrix designed using DBS. For the first time, we show actual printed patches obtained using our process. Our gamut mapping is performed in the YyCxCz color space, and is image-dependent. It incorporates several stages of alignment between the input and output spaces, as well as several stages of compression. After the gamut mapping, we tessellate the output color space into six global tetrahedra that each share the neutral axis, as an edge. Then, we determine the Neugebauer Primary Area Coverage (NPAC) for each pixel in the image to be printed by tetrahedral interpolation from the four nearest neighbors in the inverse printer mapping table. These four nearest neighbors are chosen so that only four Neugebauer primaries are used to render each pixel.

Utvärdering av ICC-profiler och profil-inställningar för HP Indigo Press 1000

Det nystartade digitaltryckeriet Digaloo planerar att inom en snar framtid införa ICC-hantering i sittarbetsflöde. Med anledning av detta har en studie utförts där antalet erfordrade ICC-profiler undersöktssamt vilka akromatiska inställningar som bäst lämpar sig för tryckeriets HP Indigo Press 1000.Testtryckning utfördes på sex av Digaloos mest använda papperskvaliteter. Genom inläsning av testkartorhar de olika papperskvaliteternas reproducerbara färgrymder åskådliggjorts. Grundat på resultatetfrån denna testtryckning framställdes ICC-profiler för valda papperskvaliteter. Dessa genereradesmed olika inställningar för akromatisk repro och TIC (Total Ink Coverage). Vid en andra testtryckninganvändes dessa ICC-profiler för konvertering av mellanton-, natt- och snöbilder, vilka trycktespå olika papperskvaliteter.Resultatet från den första testtryckningen visar att HP Indigo Press 1000 återger störst förgrymd påpapperskvaliteten Silverblade Silk, tätt följd av Silverblade Art. De minsta färgrymderna reproduceraspå Lessebo Linné Gultonat och Lessebo Linné Naturvit.Vid perceptuell bedömning av de olika bilderna blev resultatet att bäst tryckresultat uppnås medpappersspecifika ICC-profiler. Detta gäller dock endast i två av tre fall. Vid bedömning av bäst lämpadTIC ansågs den idag på Digaloo använda nivån som mycket dålig. Genom att antingen sänka eller höjadenna nivå bedömdes tryckresultatet öka i kvalitet.Slutligen visar studien även att akromatik i form av UCR ger bäst bildåtergivning i mellanton- ochnattbilder på de valda papperskvaliteterna. De olika graderna av GCR i snöbilder anses dock passaolika bra beroende på vilken papperskvalitet som används.

É possível perceber mudanças que associadas à descrição petrográfica e às características tecnológicas, orientarão uma escolha consciente e precisa do material pétreo e a monitoração do seu uso. Com a diversidade de tipos de rocha ofertados hoje no mercado, percebe-se a necessidade de preparo de profissionais para identificar a rocha mais adequada para um determinado uso. Outrossim, as características e efeitos dos produtos de limpeza precisam ser sistematicamente acompanhados, de modo que a percepção estética deve ir além da beleza momentânea, inclusive servir de referência para perceber e prever suas mudanças e respectivos desdobramentos sobre propriedades mecânicas do material no decorrer do tempo e do uso estimado e, naturalmente, sua durabilidade otimizada. A permanência da estética e preservação dos parâmetros físicos e mecânicos da rocha passam a depender do aprofundamento teórico para prever a finalidade da indicação da rocha. Os estudos realizados, neste trabalho, abordam a aplicação da espectrometria e luminosidade até a implementação prática do gerenciamento de cores e do brilho, passando pela análise conceitual da cor, sistema visual humano, fontes de luz, temperatura de cor, modelos de cores, espectro eletromagnético, espectrometria, espectro-radiométria, dispositivo para aferir a cor, além de analises petrográfica e tecnológicas do material estudado. A fim de implementar o gerenciamento de cores, foi necessário equipamento de medição, cartelas de referência para calibração e software para ler os dados captados pelo equipamento de medição. Para a implementação do sistema, em caráter experimental, foram utilizadas amostras no material pétreo Preto São Marcos, e os resultados obtidos, mostram que houve alteração do índice colorimétrico e do brilho entre o material original e o sujeito a ataque químico, embora não fossem percebidas a olho nu, devido à composição mineral da rocha. / This work aims to demonstrate that through aesthetic standards it is possible to verify changes associated to petrographic description and technological features, resulted in a conscious and accurate choice of the stone material and its use. With the diversity of lithological offered in trade today, it is possible to verify the lack of professionals prepared to identify the stone most suitable for a particular use. The aesthetic perception must go beyond the momentary beauty, it is needed to understand and predict the aesthetic and mechanical changes and the properties of the material over time and its estimate use. The permanence of the aesthetics and mechanics of the rock becomes dependent on the theoretical development that provides an indication of the rock. The studies conducted in this work, address the principle, the formation of light to the practical implementation of color management and shine, through conceptual analysis of color, human visual system, light sources, color temperature, color models, electromagnetic spectrum, spectrometry, spectroradiometry, device to measure the color, and petrographic analysis of the technological material studied. In order to implement color management, measurement equipment was necessary, reference cards for calibration and Softwaer to read the data captured by the measuring equipment. To implement the system, as experimental phase, it was used samples in a stone material Preto São Marcos and the results show that there was a change in the colorimetric index and brightness between the original material and the material exposed to chemical attack, most were not perceived with the naked eye due to mineragilogica composition of the rock.

Briefly analyzes important elements of ICC profile. In second part two java applications were designed and programmed. First one evaluates visible spectrum and graphically demonstrate procedure for obtaining trichromacy information from this spectrum. Second application analyzes ICC profile and derives gamut of described device.

Tryckeribranschen är en ekonomiskt pressad bransch som söker nya besparingsmetoder. En av metoderna är att minska insatsvaran tryckfärg med färgreduceringsprogramvara. Rapporten undersöker möjligheterna med färgreduceringssystem. Detta genom att studera hur man använder sig av färgreducering och hur det påverkar trycket. Studien avser besvara: • Hur stor färgminskning kan man använda sig av utan negativa konsekvenser på bildkvalitén? • Hur går man tillväga för att skapa den färgminskningen? • Överensstämmer total färgförändring och visuell bedömning av tryck? För att få svar på dessa frågor togs en testform fram med nödvändiga bilder och färgfält som sedan genomgick en rad färgreduktioner. Testformen utvärderades digitalt med avseende på TAC och total färgförändring. Därefter trycktes testformen och utvärderades visuellt av en testgrupp och uppmättes för att visa färgförändring efter tryck. Resultatet av undersökningen visar att det går att färgreducera tryck utan avsevärda negativa konsekvenser på bildkvalitén. En reducering från 300 % TAC till en TAC mellan 240 % och 210 % är fullt möjlig för att få en besparing och vara inom standard för total färgförändring. Detta går att göra väldigt lätt med en programvara som Alwan CMYK Optimizer ECO, med enbart förvalda inställningar och en inställd Total Ink Limit mellan 240 % och 210 %. Resultatet visade även en stark korrelation mellan den visuella bedömningen och den totala färgförändring, som tyder att både metoder är lämpliga för bedömning av tryck.

Algoritmy přepočtů gamutů ve správě barev / Gamut mapping algorithms in color management

The thesis deals with colors - their representation in digital devices and how to provide the best color preservation accross different devices. In the first part of the work, the knowledge of colors and human vision is briefly summarized. Then color models and color spaces are elaborated, mainly those device independent. Spectrum of colors viewable or printable on a device - the gamut - is different for every device and there's a need of precise reproduction or record of color. That's why the system of color management is described further and especially the gamut mapping approaches and algorithms are mentioned. In the second part of the work, the implementation of how two algorithms of color gamut mapping (HPMINDE, SCLIP) can be implemented in MATLAB is described. In the third and last part of the work, the results of implemented algorithms are presented and discussed. These results are compared to results of commonly used color gamut mapping technique (Adobe Photoshop).
