The extended acculturation model for locals : validation, outcomes, and antecedents

Lefringhausen, Katharina January 2015 (has links)
Previous scholarship has highlighted the validity and reliability of a bidimensional acculturation model for migrants, allowing for simultaneous endorsement of one’s heritage and national culture. So far, however, no empirical research has explored whether the bidimensional acculturation model can be extended from migrants to members of the mainstream society (i.e., locals). Thus, the broad aims of this dissertation were threefold: (a) to validate a new framework, termed the Extended Acculturation Model for Locals (EAML), which consists of two dimensions (i.e., national culture maintenance and multicultural adaptation), and (b) to examine the outcomes as well as (c) antecedents of these dimensions. In this dissertation, the General Introduction outlines the growth of multiculturalism across societies, followed by a review of existing acculturation research on migrants and the analogous work on locals. It is noted that migrants’ acculturation process implies individual-level changes, whilst locals’ acculturation process implies attitudes and behaviours which hinder or foster migrants’ individual-level changes. The Study Overview outlines the dimensionality of locals’ acculturation process, their adjustment outcomes and antecedents. Using a modified Vancouver Index of Acculturation (Multi-VIA), Study 1 found support for a bidimensional acculturation model for locals consisting of two reliable and valid subscales indicating national culture maintenance and multicultural adaptation. Study 2 buttresses the validity and reliability of the Multi-VIA across cultures as well as demonstrates the ability of national culture maintenance and multicultural adaptation to predict locals’ sociocultural and psychological adjustment outcomes. Study 3 explains why the correlation between locals’ national culture maintenance and multicultural adaptation is either orthogonal or positive oblique; more specifically, the correlation is moderated by locals’ degree of multicultural exposure, their likeliness to compartmentalize or blend their multicultural identity as well as through high or low self-construal endorsement. Study 4 demonstrates that national culture maintenance and multicultural adaptation predict local employees’ organizational behaviour in multinational corporations. Study 5 revealed that cultural values endorsed at the individual-level predicted locals’ national culture maintenance and multicultural adaptation. Moreover, these individual-level value-outcome associations were moderated by compatible societal-level pro-diversity messages. The General Discussion reviews all of the study findings as well as discusses their implications. The General Limitations and Future Directions describes the theoretical and methodological shortcomings of the Extended Acculturation Model for Locals whilst setting future directions for research. Last, the Final Remarks stresses the overall strengths of the present dissertation – that is, it fills the present research gap on locals’ acculturation towards multiculturalism, and in turn, provides a new route towards harmonious intergroup relations and social cohesion in mixing societies.

Analýza metod pro detekci odlehlých hodnot / Analysis of Outlier Detection Methods

Labaš, Dominik January 2021 (has links)
The topic of this thesis is analysis of methods for detection of outliers. Firstly, a description of outliers and various methods for their detection is provided. Then a description of selected data sets for testing of methods for detection of outliers is given. Next, an application design for the analysis of the described methods is presented. Then, technologies are presented, which provide models for described methods of detection of outliers. The implementation is then described in more detail. Subsequently, the results of experiments are presented, which represent the main part of this thesis. The results are evaluated and the individual models are compared with each other. Lastly, a method for accelerating outlier detection is demonstrated.

Savitakio ir vakuuminio nuotakyno palyginamoji analizė / Gravity and vacuum sewer system comparison analysis

Navickas, Marius 14 January 2009 (has links)
Magistro studijų baigiamasis darbas, 58 puslapiai, 46 paveikslai, 10 lentelės, 32 literatūros šaltiniai, 9 lietuvių kalba ir 23 už sienio kalba Tyrimo objektas – Vakuuminis ir savitakinis nuotakynas. Darbo tikslas – atlikti vakuuminio ir savitakinio nuotakyno palyginamąją analizę. Uždaviniai: 1. Išanalizuoti sistemų privalumus ir trūkumus; 2. Suprojektuoti savitakinį ir vakuuminį tinklą pasirinktai gyvenvietei; 3. Atlikti suprojektuotų tinklų ekonominė analizė Tyrimo metodai – lietuvių ir už sienio mokslinės literatūros lyginamoji analizė, scheminio vaizdavimo metodas, projektavimas. Išstudijavus Lietuvių ir užsienio literatūrą apie vakuuminį bei savitakinį nuotakyną, apžvelgta dabartinė nuotakynų būklė Lietuvoje, atlikta palyginamoji analizė, nustatyti pagrindiniai sistemų privalumai bei trūkumai, apžvelgtos vakuuminės sistemos pritaikymo sritys. Vilniaus raj. Sakališkių gyvenvietei suprojektuoto vakuuminio bei savitakinio tinklo analizė parodė, kad vakuuminio nuotakyno statybos kaštai yra beveik dvigubai mažesni negu savitakinio. Atlikta analizė parodė, kad vakuuminiai nuotakynai yra perspektyvūs tam tikromis sąlygomis, tačiau Lietuvoje nepagristai nenaudojami. Vakuuminiai nuotakynai yra nepakeičiami projektuojant lygiose, retai apgyvendintose kaimiškose vietovėse. Priimant sprendimą dėl gyvenvietės nuotekų sistemos pasirinkimo, turi būti atliktas bent dviejų skirtingų sistemų variantų palyginimas. / Master degree final work consists of 58 pages, 46 pictures, 10 tables and 32 literatures. Test object – Vacuum and gravity system. Work purpose is to perform vacuum and gravity sewer system’s comparison analysis. Main tasks: 1. Analyze systems advantages and disadvantages; 2. Project gravity and vacuum systems for chosen village; 3. Perform economical analysis for projected systems; Test methods are Lithuanian and foreign scientific literatures comparison analysis, schematic representation method, planning. Overviewed Lithuanian and foreign scientific literature about vacuum and gravity sewer system was overlooked now days sewer situation in Lithuania, completed systems comparison analysis, identified the main systems advantages and disadvantages, overlooked vacuum sewer systems appliances areas, for Sakaliskes village was projected vacuum and gravity systems. Accomplished analysis showed that vacuum sewers are perspective under certain conditions, but in Lithuania interfere unused. Vacuum sewers are unchangeable in flat territories and in rural areas. Before project starts, there should be completed comparison of vacuum, gravity and pressure sever systems.

W. Morrisovo dílo The Story of Sigurd the Volsung and the Fall of the Niblungs ve srovnání s J. R. R. Tolkienovým The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrún / A Comparison of William Morris' The Story of Sigurd the Volsung and the Fall of the Niblungs and J. R. R. Tolkien's The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrún

Hlavatá, Barbora January 2018 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the formal and stylistic analysis and comparison of two works written by English authors, namely William Morris' poem The Story of Sigurd the Volsung and the Fall of the Niblungs (1876) and J. R. R. Tolkien's poetic work The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrún (published posthumously in 2009) with respect to how each of these works deals with the original Old Norse motives which they are based on. Both Sigurd the Volsung and The Legend of Sigurd and Gudrún can be described as poetic adaptations of the Old Norse tale of Sigurd Fafnisbani, which is recounted in the Saga of the Volsungs and in a cycle of poems found in the Poetic Edda. Both Morris and Tolkien borrowed this story to use it in their own works, yet each of them treats it in a different manner. Therefore, not only do both of the works differ from the original Old Norse texts on multiple levels, but they also differ one from another. The differences between them can be traced in the metrical properties of the individual poems, for instance, or in the use of specific stylistic elements. From this, it can be inferred that although it was the goal of both authors to evoke the atmosphere of the legendary heroic past where Sigurd's story takes place, each of them attempts to do so in a different way. This is probably caused by...
