SIMD and GPU-Accelerated Rendering of Implicit ModelsShirazian, Pourya 20 January 2015 (has links)
Implicit models inherently support automatic blending and trivial collision detection which makes them an effective tool for designing complex organic shapes with many applications in various areas of research including surgical simulation systems. However, slow rendering speeds can adversely affect the performance of simulation and modelling systems. In addition, when the models are incorporated in a surgical simulation system, interactive and smooth cutting becomes a required feature for many procedures.
In this research, we propose a comprehensive framework for high-performance rendering and physically-based animation of tissues modelled using implicit surfaces. Our goal is to address performance and scalability issues that arise in rendering complex implicit models as well as in dynamic interactions between surgical tool and models.
Complex models can be created with implicit primitives, blending operators, affine transformations, deformations and constructive solid geometry in a design environment that organizes all these in a scene graph data structure called the BlobTree. We show that the BlobTree modelling approach provides a very compact data structure which supports the requirements above, as well as incremental changes and trivial collision detection. A GPU-assisted surface extraction algorithm is proposed to support interactive modelling of complex BlobTree models.
Using a finite element approach we discretize those models for accurate physically-based animation. Our system provides an interactive cutting ability using smooth intersection surfaces. The research on pastoral counseling of persons struggling with complex trauma was undertaken with the
aim of designing a practice-orientated model for pastoral counseling in order to guide such persons to
emotional healing, stability and spiritual growth.
An exegetical study throws light on the role of prayer and trust in God. One can entrust to God one's
problems and one's supplication for help in the firm belief that He will provide a way out. An
investigation into counseling perspectives in the Scriptures and in the literature on Christian counseling
brought to light that pastoral counseling, which is a mandate given to believers, affords a unique
opportunity for lovingly encouraging and consoling people with complex trauma. Contributions by
psychiatry and psychology emphasise the phase approach. They stress security and stability, the
processing of the traumatic memory and mourning, as well as a renewed commitment to new
relationships.
The core of the findings is that persons with complex trauma - which is an intricate syndrome relating to
a spectrum of post-traumatic disturbances following intense, protracted and repeated trauma - can be
guided by pastoral counseling to emotional healing, stability and spiritual growth. Specific reference is
made to victims of prolonged family violence and/or physical and/or emotional and/or sexual abuse and/or
protracted physical and/or emotional neglect in family context.
The empirical research confirmed that the children of the Abraham Krielkinderhuis, Potchefstroom, who
were subjected to these traumatic experiences in their parental homes exhibit the typical symptomatology
of complex trauma. These entail emotional disturbances like anger and self-injury, disturbances of
consciousness like dissociation, disturbances of self-image like stigma, guilt and shame, disturbances in
the image of the perpetrator, like unrealistic expectations and finally disturbances in relationships like
distrust and loss of faith. The principles and outcome of the empirical research are eventually applicable
to all persons struggling with complex trauma.
A practice-orientated counseling model was designed which focuses on stabilisation and security, the
processing of the traumatic memory and mourning, as well as a renewed commitment to life in
abundance and new relationships. In this therapeutic relationship of faith the distress narrative and the
narrative of the past are central. God allows everything to turn out for the best for those who trust in

The study of ruthenium(II) half-sandwich phosphido complexes containing pentamethylcyclopentadienyl (Cp*) ligandYang, Jin 20 December 2016 (has links)
Previous work in the Rosenberg group showed that the half-sandwich complexes Ru(η5-indenyl)Cl(PR2H)(PPh3) (2i), where R = cyclohexyl (Cy), isopropyl (Pri), phenyl (Ph), para-tolyl (Tolp), react with the strong, bulky base KOBut to give highly reactive complexes Ru(η5-indenyl)(PR2)(PPh3) (6i) containing a ruthenium-phosphorus double bond, Ru=PR2. The reactions of these phosphido complexes 6i with some reagents, such as alkenes, carbon monoxide and dihydrogen, illustrate their rich and varied reactivity. To better understand the mechanisms of these reactions (whether the indenyl effect is necessary), synthesis of analogous secondary phosphine complexes containing the pentamethylcyclopentadienyl (Cp*) ligand, Ru(η5-Cp*)Cl(PPh3)(PR2H) (2) were prepared via ligand substitution at Ru(η5-Cp*)Cl(PPh3)2 (1). Cp* phosphido complexes Ru(η5-Cp*)(PR2)(PPh3) (6) were generated in situ and their reactivity was investigated to see if they behaved similarly to the indenyl complexes. Experimental evidence in this thesis suggests that variable hapticity is not necessary in our indenyl system. In addition, these experimental evidence highlights enhanced lability of ligand at the bulky Cp*Ru fragment and higher Bronsted basicity of the phosphido ligand (PR2-) in Cp* phosphido 6 relative to the indenyl analogues 6i. / Graduate / 2017-12-11 / 0488 / yangjin@uvic.ca
