Local resident's perceptions of the impacts of the confederations cup 2009 within the City of Tshwane

Manjule, AF, Herman, UP, Coetzee, WJL 20 December 2013 (has links)
Recent decades have witnessed a substantial growth in mega and major sporting events paralleled by an equally dramatic competition amongst countries, towns, cities and stages that eager to host the events (Bull & Lovell, 2007:229). According to Darkey and Horn (2009:77), the hosting of international mega or major sport events in particular and their related tourism activities, presents the host country and its region with a unique opportunity to boost economic growth and social development. South Africa has been the world’s stage in hosting major and mega sports events that drew the world’s attention to this developing country of Southern Africa. The legacy of the Rugby World Cup 1995, the first mega event after the democracy in South Africa in 1994, the Cricket World Cup in 2003, the FIFA Confederations Cup 2009 and the latest FIFA World Cup 2010 are few examples of the opportunities provided by major and mega events (Jago et al., 2010:221). This study was aimed at determining the local residents’ perceptions of the impacts of the Confederations Cup 2009 within the city of Tshwane, as a host city. The data collection took place two (2) months prior to the event in 2009 and it covered nine (9) areas within Tshwane. The data was analysed using descriptive statistics and ANOVA, and the findings indicated that in general the respondents had a neutral perception of the impacts of the Confederations Cup 2009. This study provides future event planners and managers with insight into the hosting of mega and major events in terms of local resident’s support and participation in the event.

Construction Of &quot / new Worker&quot / In The Post 1980 Turkey: An Analysis Of Discourse Of Turk-is, Hak-is And Disk

Deli, Volkan 01 September 2010 (has links) (PDF)
This study aims at understanding the discursiveness of T&uuml / rk-Is, Hak-Is and DISK against the neoliberal policies textually and discursively shaped by the governments and employers in the years between 1980 and 2003 in Turkey. In this sense, Norman Fairclough&#039 / s critical discourse analysis and Laclau and Mouffe&#039 / s discourse theory constitute the theoretical framework of this study. In this theoretical perspective, this study analyzes discourses of the labor confederations in four historical moments called January 24 measures (1980 coup), 1994 crisis, February 28 process and 2001 crisis. In each historical moment, governments and Turkish bourgeoisie have produced new hegemonic discourses and texts in order to construct the actors and circumstances of working life under the influence of the global neoliberal order since 1980. Against this neoliberal construction of working life, texts and counter-discourses of these labor confederations become important in order to understand their hegemonic capacities. In this context, this study portrays the relation among governments, employers and the labor confederations in a hegemonic relation and argues that the hegemonic capacities of these labor confederations could not prevent construction of &#039 / new worker&#039 / as a prototype in the individualization and flexibilization of working life in the post 1980 Turkey.

An Analysis Of The Positions Of Turkish Trade Union Confederations Towards Social Dialogue

Aklar, Zeynep Ekin 01 January 2009 (has links) (PDF)
As part of her membership negotiations with the EU, Turkey is expected to adopt the &ldquo / acquis communataire&rdquo / , which requires her to adjust her administrative structures to European standards in a variety of policy spheres, including the social policy and social dialogue. Within this context, this thesis aims to analyze the approaches of the Turkish trade union confederations towards the practices of social dialogue at the European level, as well as their experiences of social dialogue mechanisms in Turkey through the data gathered from in depth interviews with the officials of the three trade union confederations, TURK-IS, DISK, HAK-IS, and some of their member unions. While all Turkish trade union confederations find social dialogue mechanisms fairly operational at the EU level, in relation to Turkey they all agree that such mechanisms are far from meeting their expectations. Beyond this common point the conceptualizations of social dialogue, interpretations over its structure, functions, and features, as well as the evaluations accounting for its underdevelopment in the Turkish context, show considerable variation across the three confederations.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Clarice Morales.pdf: 2316090 bytes, checksum: a0c2331b9f3a67e12c59f0393173b20f (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-03-25 / This study investigates the influence of Brazilian National Sports Laws in the governance of Olympic Sports Confederations and Federations, between 1941 and 2013. These organizations have demonstrated management difficulties according to governance principles, such as transparency, social responsibility, ethics and accountability, receiving criticism from diverse sport’s stakeholders. The Brazilian national sport system was implemented by the Decree-Law n. 3199 of 14/08/1941, which created and regulated national and state sports organizations until the 80’s. With the new Constitution of 1988, sports became law definitive and, according to the Law no. 9.615 of 1998, high performance sports continued to be monitored and regulated by the government. The central question of this study was: how the Brazilian national sports laws have influenced in the governance of Confederations and Federations of Olympic Sports between 1941 and 2013? The methodology employed is qualitative, exploratory, descriptive, documental and bibliographic; two confederations and two federations were taken as case studies. The triangulation of documentary evidence, semi-structured interviews and theories corporate governance and management in the Third Sector brought important results and expanded the discussion towards a more complex view. As contributions this study chronologically presents the concepts, functions and the legal and management control of the state over the governance of sports organizations, from 1941 until 2013. It also studies the characteristics of sports organizations, as the Third Sector and the applicability of the concepts and governance principles for understanding of management needs, proposing some practices. Based on documentary studies, the theoretical framework and interviews concluded that the laws influenced and influence the governance of sports organizations.
