The effects of in-service workshops on computer anxiety in elementary teachers

The computer education literature documents computer anxiety as a problem common to classroom teachers without prior computer training. This study was an investigation of the effectiveness of workshops designed to reduce such anxiety. The treatment comprised of instruction based upon principles derived from the literature was administered to 80 teachers in a Treatment group and 57 teachers in a Quasi-control group. Pre-test measurements included a Computer Background Information survey, Part II of the Minnesota Computer Literacy and Awareness Assessment and the Trait section of the Spielberger State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). Post-test measures were the State section of the State Trait Anxiety Inventory, Part I of the Minnesota Computer Literacy and Awareness Assessment and a LOGO quiz. Statistical treatment of the data included T-test comparisons between Treatment and Quasi-control groups on tests of computer Knowledge; Chi-square test of independence between groups on descriptive characteristics and a one-way analysis of variance testing the relationship between test anxiety and achievement. Findings confirm an inverse relationship between computer knowledge and computer anxiety. The workshop treatment derived from the literature on in-service training and computer anxiety was an effective vehicle for increasing teacher knowledge and reducing computer anxiety. Study results show that teachers exposed to the treatment workshops reported an increase in positive attitudes toward computer use. Comparisons of pre- and post-workshop State anxiety measurements yielded evidence of significant computer anxiety reduction. / Ed. D.

The effects of impurities in corrosive media causing stress corrosion cracking in aisi 304 stainless steel

The influence of impurities in magnesium chloride upon the rate of attack of stress corrosion cracking in AISI 304 stainless steel has been investigated. Previous investigations in this laboratory indicated that different batches of technical grade magnesium chloride produced poor reproducibility of results. These inconsistencies were attributed to the presence of varying amounts of impurities which are commonly found in technical grade magnesium chloride. In this investigation, certified grade magnesium chloride was used with impurities intentionally added in order to determine how each affected the constants M and C in the following equation, which relates the maximum crack depth D, to the time of exposure to the corrosive medium, t: log t • D/M + log C The constant C represents the time of exposure to the corrosive media to nucleate cracking, and M is a function of the rate at which cracks propagate. It was determined that the impurity ions most commonly found in magnesium chloride were nitrate, sulfate, and calcium. A significant difference in the constants V and M was found to exist with the presence of each impurity. It was not determined, however, if a change in pH resulted from the addition of the impurity compounds. Hence, a further study is required in order to determine the pH of the corrosive media and the effects of its changes. / Master of Science

Exodus and black theology : an investigation

Black Theology uses the Exodus episode as its locus classicus for its view of God' s preferential option for the poor and the oppressed. The purpose of the dissertation is to determine to what extent Black Theology is scripturally justified in doing so. The investigation concludes that - i) the use of a praxis 'claimed to be Christian' in the hermeneutic of Black Theology, becomes questionable and unconvincing in that there is an illogical vacillation between a self-determined praxis-horizon and a text-horizon and that, ii ) when some aspects of Black Theology are measured using constraint criteria suggested by Kelsey, Black Theology exceeds the limits of acceptability by taking the exodus event as the locus classicus for the slogan that God is always on the side of the poor and the oppressed. While for some Black theology is indeed an important new stage in theologizing it must however be remembered that liberation theology, in Africa at least, is still in its infancy. / Biblical and Ancient Studies / Th.M. Portable science: podcasting as an outreach tool for a large academic science and engineering library

INTRODUCTION While the concept is widely defined and interpreted, all Web 2.0 tools have certain characteristics in common; they are collaborative in nature, interactive, and dynamic. The Science and Engineering librarians at the University of British Columbia are collaborating with their liaison departments to record science and engineering podcasts, host them and share them with a wider audience. OBJECTIVES In this session, we discuss the use of podcasting as an outreach tool that connects a large academic science and engineering library with its users and raises users’ awareness of additional library services. Functionality, usability and practical applications of podcasting tools are reviewed. OUTCOMES At the end of this session, we will have demonstrated: 1) Overall usability of podcasting academic science and engineering content; tips and tricks when creating and tailoring podcasts to your community needs; 2) Use of podcasting as an outreach and community engagement tool in academic libraries and as a supplement for the traditional academic information resources. DISCUSSION The strength of podcasting, to allow content to be created by the users for the users, makes it an appealing addition to the academic librarians’ toolbox. Podcasting is a service that many of our users might not expect from their library, which makes it a unique and attractive offering. It requires few resources, and the end result might exceed librarians’ expectations. We found podcasting to be a robust outreach tool and a service that raises the profile of the library and as such creates an opportunity for users to find additional library resources. Nevertheless, it is necessary for academic librarians to critically evaluate the continuous innovations of Web 2.0 technologies on an ongoing basis so that they are best prepared to put them into the appropriate context amongst other relevant and important information.

Johannesburg, August 2015. / Burials within the Western Cape provide a valuable opportunity to understand past social practices during the Later Stone Age. The aim of this dissertation is to specifically study Western Cape LSA burials in such a way as to understand the social and cognitive processes of hunter-gatherers in that region. In order to do this the burials will be approached and studied from a social and cultural perspective. This will include applying a theoretical approach which lends itself to materiality. Certain techniques will be employed to aid the study of this research question, such as a temporal, spatial and structural analysis of the Western Cape burials. Once the temporal analysis is done, certain sections within time can more closely be studied and analysed. The spatial analysis will examine the sites on a regional scale. The interpretative discussion will concentrate on specific patterns and structural aspects of the burials. The above may illuminate a possible array of questions to be asked surrounding the Western Cape burials. This in turn will help in aiding a discussion surrounding the cognitive and social processes of hunter-gatherers in the Western Cape.
