The Development of Selected Rubral Connections in the North American Opossum

We have employed axonal transport and degeneration techniques to study the development of selected rubral connections in the North American opossum. Opossums were chosen for study because they are born in an immature state, 12 days after conception, and have a lengthy postnatal development. The results of our studies suggest that: (1) the red nucleus innervates the spinal cord early in development, but not as early as some areas of the brainstem; (2) rubrospinal development occurs postnatally in the opossum; (3) rubrospinal axons do not grow synchronously into the spinal cord, but are added over time; (4) rubrospinal development follows rough rostral to caudal and lateral to medial gradients; (5) the red nucleus is innervated by the cerebellum well before it receives projections from the cerebral cortex; and (6) cortical axons do not grow into the red nucleus until after rubrospinal axons have reached most of their adult targets.

Griffin??s capitol: it??s place in the design of Canberra and the connection with the ideas of Louis Sullivan

This thesis argues that Walter Burley Griffin's Capitol as a place of popular congregation on a prominent city site had a critical place in his design for Australia's Federal Capital It offers an intensive and critical reflection on the nature, origin and cultural implications of the Capitol in the context of Canberra's subsequent planning and development. The Capitol represented the essential idea from which he constructed an organic design, integrated with the site conditions and following Sullivan's famous dictum Form follows function. It signified organic democracy, 'a grass roots view' which Griffin shared with Sullivan, rather than the 'top down view' of the mandated power of Government. In order to provide an understanding of how these principles informed Griffin's design, Sullivan's and Griffin's published and unpublished writings are critically reviewed for evidence of the convergence of ideas and agreement on fundamental principles. Resonance with these principles was found in the Competition Drawings and the Original Report entered in the Competition by Griffin. The analysis also drew upon an extensive critical review of sources such as Marion Mahony Griffin's Magic of America, parliamentary papers, archival records, personal papers, and the published literature of Australian and American scholars on Sullivan and Griffin. Sources pertaining to historical movements in architecture and town planning and narratives on architecture for government also formed part of this critical review. The conclusion is that when the desires of the Commonwealth Government were focused by its chief architect on Griffin's Capitol site as the place which should be occupied by Parliament House, the nadir was reached for Griffin's original concept. The vision supplanted, the unravelling of Griffin's organic city plan, with its connections with the ideas of Louis Sullivan, began. Other ideologies began to be introduced with other relationships of form and function, and cost to the organism which was Griffin's city .

Prototype Development and Experimental Verification of a Cast Modular Connector for Seismic-Resistant Steel Frames

A cast modular connector (MC) has been developed for use in seismic-resistant steel moment frames. The MC is a field bolted beam flange connection intended to serve as the frame's special energy-dissipating detail. The connector is specifically configured for optimal seismic performance through a casting process. The MC possesses inherent ductility through variable-section arms that minimize plastic strain demand and a reliable yet economical fastening method through a base end-region that virtually eliminates prying forces on bolts.The dissertation presents three journal papers. The first paper describes the portion of the analytical research focused on establishing the optimum geometry for the energy dissipating arm elements. Key parameters were evaluated through parametric studies using nonlinear (material and geometry) finite element analysis and supported by basic theoretical models. The outcome was a set of optimum geometric ratios covering width reduction, length to thickness, aspect ratio, and fillet radius.The second paper describes the development process of the isolated connector rather than full-connection behavior. Designs were alternately evaluated for structural performance and castability through the electronic exchange of solid model files with steel foundry industry partners. The analytical results indicate the potential for excellent ductility and energy dissipation characteristics in the MC Beta prototype.The third paper focuses on the prototyping and experimental verification of the MC Beta prototype. Steel foundry industry partners cast the MC Beta prototype at approximately half-scale. The scaled MC Beta prototype was tested in isolated fashion under monotonic and cyclic loading. The experimental results confirmed the performance of the analytically-based designs. The MC Beta prototype exhibited exceptional performance in terms of stable energy dissipation, far exceeding qualifying rotational ductility capacities. In direct comparisons to a WT section of similar stiffness and strength, the MC Beta prototype possessed greatly enhanced ductility and energy dissipation characteristics.With the MC Beta prototype developed and experimentally verified under isolated conditions, an experimental verification of beam-to-column joints containing the scaled MCs were performed using accepted testing protocols. The preliminary test results indicate that the connection exceeded qualifying rotational ductility capacities and showed promise as a special energy-dissipating detail in seismic-resistant steel moment frames.

Connection point : the intersection of organization and community

This inquiry explores the notion of how an urban grocery store might improve its connection to the local community. Through interviews with four subject matter experts, sessions with the store management team, and an online customer survey, I assess the characteristics that allow the store to form a stronger connection to the community. Contributors were actual customers, allowing me to provide very specific feedback to the sponsor. My findings show that there is a strong link between positive one-on-one interactions that affect recurrence for grocery shoppers; cleanliness has significant interaction with high quality, fair prices, and good selection; and sporting team jerseys worn by the staff reflect positively towards the customer's view of the store being a good community citizen. I conclude that organizations cannot connect directly with communities; however, staff can connect with individual shoppers, thereby contributing to the store's association to the community.
