The coastal region of southern Brazil is inserted into the Pampa biome and its natural vegetation presents a mosaic of formations, including areas of grasslands used for cattle grazing. The coastal grasslands represent one of the Pampa biome physiognomies most converted to other uses. In this region a few floristic isolated studies were recently conducted, while ecological studies about the interaction of vegetation with environmental and spatial variables are even rarer. We aimed to realize a broad descriptive and ecological study of the vegetation of the coastal sandy grasslands along 536 km in southern Brazil. We sampled 16 areas distributed along the coastal plain, with 15 plots of 1 m² per area. The species were classified according to their growth forms, origin and degree of threat. Also climate, soil characteristics and geographic coordinates for each area were observed. By using multivariate analyzes (ordination and variation partitioning) we verified the relative contribution of environment and space for variation in species composition between areas. We found 221 species, from which 14 were exotic and two threatened. Axonopus aff. affinis, Paspalum notatum and Paspalum pumilum were some of the most important species characterizing the areas. Most of the vegetation cover is by prostrate species of grasses, which is related to the presence of grazing in all areas. The change in community composition between areas is mostly related, to changing in climatic variables, as well as to space, since both vary together. We observed that despite the homogeneity in the soil conditions, in fine scale we could observe the influence of the soil in community variation. The coastal grasslands have a unique physiognomy, but the remnant areas are vulnerable, mainly by landscape fragmentation. Management practices, especially livestock, should consider the fragility of the soil of this region, adopting lower stocking levels to contribute to the preservation of the last fragments of this formation.

Shoreline Erosion at Mad Island Marsh Preserve, Matagorda County, TexasMangham, Webster 08 1900 (has links)
The Nature Conservancy of Texas (TNC) is concerned with the amount of shoreline erosion taking place at its Mad Island Marsh Preserve (MIMP), located in Matagorda Bay, Texas. The MIMP is a 7,100 acre nature preserve that borders the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway and is eroded by waves generated by barge traffic. TNC is concerned that erosion will shorten Mad Island Bayou which may increase the salinity of Mad Island Lake; with detrimental effects on lake and marsh habitats. This study uses GPS technology to map the current shoreline and GIS to determine ten year erosion rates (1995 - 2005). Results show that erosion is occurring at various rates along the shoreline as well as along the oxbow bend in Mad Island Bayou.

The Use of Community-Based Conservation in Natural Resource Management: Case Studies from The Nature Conservancy of VirginiaBabylon, Ruth G. 20 November 2003 (has links)
In March 2002, The Nature Conservancy purchased a 9,000-acre tract of land on and near Warm Springs Mountain in Bath County, Virginia. The purpose of this paper is to examine community-based conservation strategies utilized by The Nature Conservancy in two well-established Virginia reserves to determine the effectiveness of those strategies in the protection of Warm Springs Mountain. The Conservancy's previous work on Virginia's Eastern Shore and in the Clinch Valley of southwest Virginia reveals the organization's transition from a strategy of mere land acquisition to the use of community-based conservation in an effort to involve local citizens and promote a proper balance between economics and the environment.
The community-based conservation model developed by TNC on the Eastern Shore and utilized further in the Clinch Valley works well for ecoregions that fit a particular typology. The paper discusses the differences between that typology and the factors affecting the protection of Warm Springs Mountain. In addition, the paper outlines the lessons TNC learned from both positive and negative experiences in the two earlier preserves and proposes how these lessons can be applied to the Warm Springs Mountain Preserve. / Master of Urban and Regional Planning

Analyse der Landschaftszerschneidung in SachsenTröger, Martina 21 January 2013 (has links)

Integrating Electrochromic Glazing Technology into Conservation-Focused Lighting Design for Museum CollectionsStapleton, Adrian January 2022 (has links)
Museums, art galleries, and historical sites house items of important cultural value. They must provide sufficient lighting to allow for the public viewing of these items, but are also responsible for conservation of them, which requires strict control of the light levels on delicate materials. Windows provide many benefits to building occupants, but for light control, museums restrict the use of daylight. Electrochromic (EC) glazing changes opacity based on electrical charge, so it is possible to vary the amount of daylight admitted through windows. EC glazing can be integrated with museum lighting through a building management system, which can modulate light levels based on a variety of inputs. The Renwick Gallery is used as a case study for the potential application of EC glazing in a museum space. Because of other requirements for the management of environmental conditions, the use of EC glazing will not show a significant reduction in energy consumption. However, the benefits of access to windows, daylight, and views justify its use. EC technology is advancing rapidly. Due to its current limitations and the logistics of application into a historic structure, the Renwick Gallery may best be served by future advancements.
