The communication of West Nile virus risk: a newspaper analysis

Watts, Dorian E. 01 September 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this research was to understand how the risks associated with West Nile virus (WNV) were presented by the Winnipeg Free Press. A detailed content analysis was completed on all Winnipeg Free Press articles and Manitoba Health news releases, between 1999 and 2008, containing information related to West Nile. Additional data included interviews with government and media representatives. Several recurring frames, including blame, controversy, rights and fairness, risk, and uncertainty were found in the newspaper data. Over time there was a decrease in both the coverage and prominence of WNV-related issues by the Winnipeg Free Press. In terms of the use of sources by media, the provincial government was found to be the most commonly used source in this context. Reporting of WNV-related issues by the Winnipeg Free Press has been relatively clear and balanced despite some initial alarmist coverage surrounding the uncertainty of the arrival of WNV.

Emotionally-laden words used by counselling and clinical psychologists to describe clients : a content analytic study

Kasnakian, Caroline January 1995 (has links)
The present study examined the influence personological variables have on therapists' style of conceptualising a hypothetical client's presenting problem. More specifically, the effects of clinical experience (novice vs. expert) and clinical affiliation (counseling psychologist vs. clinical psychologist) on therapists' style of conceptualizing a client's presenting problem was assessed. The emotional content of the therapists' verbal behaviour during a think-aloud diagnostic task, was analyzed. The Feeling Lexicon indexing procedure was used to assess the emotional content of therapists' discourse during the diagnostic task. Eighteen clinical psychologists and eighteen counselling psychologists were selected to fulfill the criteria for having either novice or expert clinical experience. The findings indicated that: (a) counseling psychologists verbalize more words that connote an emotional content than clinical psychologists and, (b) novice therapists express higher levels of emotionality than expert therapists. Implications for training and clinical practice are discussed.

Islam i skolan : En studie om framställningen av muslimer i läromedel

Gustafsson, Annie, Torstensson, Elias January 2013 (has links)
This essay is a study of  textbooks in religious education for middle school. Textbooks are for many, the first contact with religion and they contain a shorter description of different religions. The study is supported by theories of 'Islamofobi' by Mattias Gardell as well as oriental studies by Edward W. Said. The purpose of the study is to examine how textbooks describe islam and muslims' situation in Sweden. Four textbooks from 1992 until 2011 have been used in the examination. The purpose is also to investigate the differences and/or similarities between these texts. The survey was made by a qualitative content analysis. The result shows that confusing facts emerges regarding islam and muslims' situation in Sweden, as well as muslims' tend to be described as a homogeneous group. In more modern textbooks you will find that muslims' are described as a homogenous group less than before, but there are still parts of the texts which are very generalising.

北京奧運與中國大陸在《時代》週刊與《經濟學人》雜誌所呈現之形象 / Beijing Olympics and the Images of China in Time and The Economist

郭孟霖, Kuo, Meng lin Unknown Date (has links)
none / This thesis explores whether hosting the Beijing Olympic Games has helped promote China’s images as measured by quantitative and qualitative analysis of news coverage on China in Time and The Economist. Content analysis showed that coverage on China in both magazines increased as the Beijing Olympic Games neared. Both Time and The Economist paid the most attention to China’s “politics,” “economics,” and “society,” while “education” and “health” received the least coverage. The newsmagazines covered China more negatively than positively; however, Time demonstrated a friendlier stance towards China than The Economist. In terms of length of article, both magazines spent the most number of pages covering “general,” or articles that cover more than one subject, followed by “health” and “economics” in Time and “environment” and “economics” in The Economist. Discourse analysis showed the frames used to cover China in the newsmagazines were, China as a country that suppresses its people’s rights, China as a country full of chances yet beware of risks and uncertainties, China as a country working on environmental protection, China as a country short of resources, the Internet as a medium changing Chinese youth’s way of living, China as an unstable and unequal developing country, China as a country with flowering creativity amid low acceptance, China’s problematic education system yet willing to make changes, China lags in healthcare, disease surveillance and control. Manheim and Albritton (1994) argue that a nation’s image is boosted when positive coverage increases, while negative coverage decreases. This study found that hosting the Olympic Games helped promote China’s images in Time more significantly than in The Economist, particularly in “economics,” “environment,” “technology,” and “culture and leisure”.
