Conversion in Great Expectations : An analysis of Charles Dickens's Great Expectations from a conversion narrative perspective

Ryrberg, Sophie January 2014 (has links)
This essay will analyse Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations from a conversion narrative perspective. It will show that the journey of the protagonist Pip have resemblances to the journey of Dante in Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy. The reason for this is that Great Expectations is an equally clear example of a conversion narrative as The Divine Comedy. Both Pip and Dante meet sinners along their way, but the focus is on how the protagonists deal with their own sins. Pip goes through a typical conversion, where he goes from an avaricious, prodigal and proud person, to a man who values working hard for a sufficient living and being with the ones he love.

Un avatar de la conversion : les enjeux du discours identitaire dans Les Inventés de Jean-Pierre Girard / An avatar of the conversion : what is at stake in the identity discourse of Jean Pierre Girard’s novel Les Inventés

Clough, Christianne 27 October 2010 (has links)
This thesis analyses the pattern of the secular conversion in the Jean-Pierre Girard’s novel Les Inventés (1999), novel which shows both the Quebec contemporary creativity in literature and, in its own way, a generation confronted to an identity crisis. Dedicated to the conceptual apparatus, the first part justifies the use of the tools that the thesis borrows to the literary semiotic. Moreover this part aims at highlighting the main characteristics of the conversion throughout its different means of expression in a narrative context, on the basis of St-Paul and St-Augustin’s models. The second part, which studies the cognitive dimension, analyses the novel itself and starts with a discussion about the notion of quest. This part develops the hypothesis of two concepts : the escape and the spiritual waiting. Those are essential for the evolution of the subject when he needs to survive or to open his mind to otherness. This second part leads to the study of the « external principles », secondary or decisive, that is to say figures whose role is more or less determining in the process of conversion, depending on the case. The third part is devoted to the study of the « passional dimension » of François’ journey, starting with his painful past, emphasized by a spread of pathemes, especially the hatred, resent and rage. Then the relations between wrath and hope will be specified. Finally, the study of the pre-conversion and the character’s conversion enables to highlight the passion of generosity and its different ethical implications, as well as the nature of a renewed subject.

Choosing the Church: My Story of Conversion and Faith

McCoy, Marina, 1968- Unknown Date (has links)
In the Agape Latte series for undergraduates, Dr. Marina McCoy shared her conversion to Catholicism. She noted that the rituals and practices of Catholicism are intriguing to newcomers. "Converts get excited about rituals," she said. She stressed the idea of freedom that comes with the act of conversion. "Conversion is a lifelong experience of God bringing us closer to Him. It is a greater expression of freedom," she said. / with Dr. Marina Mc Coy / Hillside Cafe

Transforming Desire: The Relation of Religious Conversion and Moral Conversion in the Later Writings of Bernard Lonergan

Cone, Steven Douglas January 2009 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Frederick Lawrence / This work argues that religious conversion sublates moral conversion and also, de facto, serves as a necessary foundation for moral conversion. Religious conversion acts this way by transforming the religiously converted subject's feelings. Through this radical change in the subject's motivation, and the consequent change in the kinds of meanings that constitute the subject, religious conversion also transforms the nature of the human good of which the subject is a part. It thereby provides the basis for the right ordering of the human good toward transcendent value and a supernatural end. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2009. / Submitted to: Boston College. A study of the conversion of 2,2',4,4',6,6'-hexanitrobibenzyl to 2,2',4,4',6,6'-hexanitrostilbene

Jayaweera-Bandara, A. M. January 1985 (has links)
The main aim of this project was to optimize the conversion of 2,2', 4,4', 6,6' - hexanitrobibenzal (DPE) into 2,2', 4,4',6,6' - hexanitrostilbene (HNS). This was acheived in that conversions of greater than 90% were obtained when using salts of carboxylic acids as bases and oxygen as oxidant in dymethylsulphoxide solution. During the course of the work, studies of n.m.r spectra, reaction kinetics and electrochemistry provided convincing evidence that reaction proceeds via oxidation of the DPE monoanion which is in equilibrium with the more stable dianion and the substrate. It was also found possible to produce the DPE dianion by electrolytic reduction of HNS. In order to obtain more general information pertaining to the dehydrogenation of compounds of this type, a number of variously nitrosubstituted bibenzyls including naphthalene analogues, were prepared and their base induced dehydrogenations, in the presence of oxygen, studied. In general it was found that the substitution of nitro groups in ortho positions was disadvantageous except in the case of DPE itself. P,P' - Dinitrobibenzyl and 1,2-di-(4-nitro-1-naphthyl)ethane were found to be readily prepared and dehydrogenated in good yield using t-butoxide anion in dimethylsulphoxide solution under oxygen. In the former case, kinetic evidence was obtained which suggests that reaction proceeds via the dianion in contrast to the DPE.
