A pre-employment core skills programme for young adultsCoetzee, Heidemarie Edelgard January 2014 (has links)
This study focussed on the development and pilot testing of a research based preemployment
core skills programme for young adults in order to equip them for the
open labour market, to improve the young adults’ knowledge and application of
employment core skills, which in turn could increase the likelihood of securing
employment. This programme can also help to alleviate unemployment and poverty
by contributing to the social development of young adults, enhancing human capital
development, increasing opportunities to reach full educational potential, enhancing
economic development and increasing the opportunity to be self-sufficient and
raising the quality of life.
The motivation for this study is based on the high unemployment amongst young
adults, the lack of intervention programmes that address core skills for employment
for young adults that are making the transition from school to work in South Africa
and the apparent lack of core skills support for young adults at places of
employment. The study was conducted from an ecological systems perspective
which is relevant for the social work profession and to the “help professional” who
engages with young adults. The applied research was used and a quantitative research approach was
undertaken by using self-administered and group-administered questionnaires to
collect data in a standardised way under controlled circumstances with procedures
planned prior to the commencement of the study in order to test a hypothesis. The
study was conducted in two phases namely (A) an exploration of core employment
skills needed by young adults by using a quantitative descriptive survey research
design and (B) the development and pilot testing of a pre-employment core skills
programme for young adults by using a one-group pretest-posttest design to assess
the change in knowledge of core skills of young adults through the deployment of an
intervention of the programme.
The discussion of young adulthood as a life phase highlighted the nature of human
development. The discussion of the different development theories gave a good
indication of what development tasks are of importance during young adulthood and
especially in terms of preparation for entering into the labour market (career).
Unemployment has various impacts on the young adult who in turn has an effect on
the social system and the economy of South Africa.
From the empirical findings of phase A and combining the literature study it became
apparent that young adults who can communicate well, solve problems and work
with others are more employable as they can assume an active, adaptive and
responsible role in the workplace and society. This information was used to develop
a pre-employment core skills programme for young adults. The conceptual
programme model, the experiential learning approach and problem-based learning
were used for the basis of the core skills programme. The aim of the core skills
programme was to enhance the young adults’ knowledge and application of core
skills necessary for employment and their employment opportunities. The findings
from phase B indicate that the developed programme did enhance the young adults’
knowledge of core skills necessary for employment and that the developed
programme can be implemented with young adults between the ages of 18-25 years. / Dissertation (MSW)--University of Pretoria, 2014. / tm2015 / Social Work and Criminology / MSW / Unrestricted

High Frequency Magnetic Core Loss StudyMu, Mingkai 22 March 2013 (has links)
The core used to build power inductors and transformers are soft magnetic materials. When there is alternating external field, the magnetic moments rotate and consume energy, which is the core loss. The core loss depends on the AC flux frequency, amplitude, waveform, DC bias and temperature. These dependences are nonlinear and difficult to predict. How to measure, model and analyze the core loss is a challenge for decades.
In this dissertation, two new core loss measurement methods are introduced first. These two methods use the reactive cancellation concept to reduce the sensitivity to phase discrepancy, which will destroy the accuracy in classic two-winding method for high frequency high quality factor sample measurements. By using the new measurement techniques the accuracy can be improved by several orders. The first is for sinusoidal waveforms, and the second is for non-sinusoidal wave. The new methods enable high frequency core loss characterization capability, which will help scientists and engineers on material research and inductor/transformer design. Measurement examples, considerations and error analysis are demonstrated and discussed in detail.
With the measurement techniques, the core loss under rectangular AC voltage and DC bias current are investigated. A new core loss model named rectangular extension Steinmetz equation (RESE) is proposed based on the measurement results. The new model is shown to be more accurate than the existing core loss models. Several commercially available MnZn ferrites are characterized and modeled.
Other than conventional MnZn ferrite materials, three commercial LTCC ferrite materials are characterized for integrated power supply applications. Based on characterized properties of these LTCCs, a group of new LTCC ferrites are fabricated and tested. The new LTCC is fabricated by laminating commercial LTCC tapes and co-firing. The new LTCC is demonstrated to have over 50% more inductance over the commercial LTCC materials. This work indicates that the power electronics engineers should work with material engineers to get the optimum material for a given application.
In the last part, the core loss of the partially saturated lateral flux planar inductor is analyzed. The challenge of the analysis is the complexity of the distribution of bias field and flux density in a highly biased planar inductor. Each point in the core is working at different excitation and bias condition, and the core loss density is very non-uniform. The proposed method combines the characterization tested in previous chapters and the commercial finite element tool. Experiments verified that the calculation errors are within about 10%.
In conclusion, the research in this dissertation proposed a complete solution to measure, model and analyze the high frequency core loss. This solution will not only facilitate fundamental research on physics understanding and material innovation, but also development of power electronics and RF applications. / Ph. D.

Mineralisering, omvandling och ursprungliga bergarter av borrkärnor från Renströmområdet, Skelleftefältet / Mineralization, alteration and protolith of drill cores from the Renström area, Skellefte districtDahl, Gustav January 2018 (has links)
Mining of economically important resources is a process happening all over the world and have been increasing in effectiveness during the last century. Increased mining of the resources means that the easily accessed bodies of these minerals is exhausted. Prospecting methods to find new bodies in the ground is then needed. One of these methods is core logging. The goal of the project was to locate potential valuable mineralization. Two different cores were logged and evaluated with a hand held XRF during the project. The effectiveness of core logging as an exploration method was evaluated.Ore body containing large amounts of Zn as well as Pb, Cu and Fe were identified in both drill cores. pXRF and logging gave the same size and grades of the ore body. Protoliths and its composition were identified.Exploration methods like core logging is useful when summary information of the drill core is necessary and the information needs to be given fast. The method is therefore effective in the field at the drill stations to give continuously information about the drill cores being drilled. The method is most effective when combined with other methods like geochemical or geophysical methods.

Effect of Surface Stability on Core Muscle Activity During Dynamic Resistance ExercisesThompson, Brennan J. 01 May 2009 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to compare core muscle activity during resistance exercises performed on stable ground versus an unstable surface and to examine whether lifting at different relative intensities affects core muscle activity levels. Twelve trained men performed four different movements including the deadlift, back squat, military press, and curl. Surface electromyography (EMG) was utilized to assess the activity of the rectus abdominis, external oblique, transversus abdominis, and erector spinae muscles. Participants performed each movement under three separate conditions including standing on stable ground with 50% of their one repetition maximum (1-RM), standing on a BOSU balance trainer with 50% of their 1-RM and, standing on stable ground with 75% of their 1-RM. The following muscles exhibited greater activity during the 75% 1-RM condition than all other conditions: the transversus abdominis (TA) and external oblique (EO) muscles during the deadlift; the rectus abdominis (RA) during the squat; the TA, RA, and EO during the press, and TA and erector spinae (ES) during the curl. The ES muscle during the press movement and EO during the squat movement were more active during the BOSU 50% 1-RM condition than the stable 50% 1-RM condition. Healthy individuals might consider performing the military press, curl, squat and deadlift movements with higher intensity resistances while standing on stable ground to incur higher widespread muscle activity of the core region.

Temporal trends in West Antarctic accumulation rates: evidence from observed and simulated recordsBurgener, Landon Kelly 05 July 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Reconstructed snow accumulation rate observations from five new firn cores show a statistically significant negative trend in accumulation rates over the past four decades across the central West Antarctic ice sheet. A negative temporal trend in accumulation is unexpected in light of rising surface temperatures and simulations run by GCMs. Both the magnitude of the mean accumulation rates and the range of interannual variability observed in the new records compares favorably to older records, suggesting that the new accumulation rate records may serve as a regional proxy for recent temporal trends in West Antarctic accumulation rates. The observed negative trend is likely the result of Southern Hemisphere high-latitude internal atmospheric dynamics, dominated by changes in the austral fall season. The well-documented positive trend in the Southern Annular Mode causes a low pressure center to form over the Amundsen Sea, which in turn produces lower accumulation rates across the western portion of the West Antarctic ice sheet. The new accumulation rate records are compared to several models/reanalyses to test the skill of simulated accumulation rate predictions. While the models/reanalyses and the new observations agree well in both mean and variability, the simulated records do not capture the full negative trend observed in the reconstructed records.

"Vad gör DU specifikt för att se till att värdegrundsarbetet håller?" : En jämförande studie kring värdegrundsarbete i en privat och en kommunal verksamhet utifrån ett chefsperspektiv / "What do YOU do specifically to make sure that the value-based work lasts?" : A comparative study of value-based work in a private and a municipal business from a managerial perspectiveCarmesund, Helena January 2023 (has links)
This essay is a comparative study of a private and a municipal organization that both run nursing homes. The purpose of the thesis has been to contribute knowledge about organizations' value-based work from a managerial perspective with a focus on function, goals and evaluation. By comparing a private and a municipal organizations with a focus on any differences and similarities in a value-based work, it can be concluded that the difference was smaller than expected. Based on the fact that a private company sells places in nursing homes to external stakeholders, one idea was that core values would play a major role in marketing, which they did not. What both the municipal and the private organizations instead highlighted was the importance of a sustainable and lasting business. The private as well as the municipal organization pointed out that the core values were primarily directed internally, starting already when recruiting new employees, in order to create a good working environment for clients, employees and managers. Where both operations emphasized the importance of being genuine and living the values as a manager and leader in order to be able to lead and guide their employees into the value thinking. Both the private and municipal organization have written down core values, and despite the fact that the work with core values today are in a little different way in the two organizations, both points out the importance of keeping the work with core values alive. Where both businesses want to believe that their businesses are better with core values than they would have been if they had not had it
