Curriculum Development for the Novice Developer

Whetten, Darcy L. 03 July 2013 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis addressed the need to inform and demonstrate to novice developers the process of developing a curriculum and the need to guide novice teachers with little or no access to formal training. A curriculum for novice teachers in community programs was developed such that the teachers were presented clear and specific guidance in presenting lessons with minimal preparation time and with minimal training. Eight novice teachers presented the lessons in ESL and EFL contexts and provided feedback on the success, strengths, and weaknesses of the curriculum and lessons. The participants indicated that the curriculum overall is satisfactory, easy to follow, and meaningful to the students and teachers. The participants also indicated that the teachers need more guidance in the areas of adapting the lessons and engaging the students.

Tensions in Care: Caregiving for an Adult Child with Developmental Disability

Skinner, Samantha 11 1900 (has links)
For this research, semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted with primary caregivers that have adult children with disabilities. These interviews explored the lived experience of caregiving of primary caregivers. Three main themes surrounding care were found, all falling within the larger context of tensions in care. The first theme captures tensions in policy that promote empowerment but also produce disablement. Second, tensions exist between service agencies and lived experience of care. Lastly, tensions exist between were between the burdens and rewards of caregiving. It is these three themes and tensions that impact caregiving experiences at a personal level with the participants. These tensions are explored at a qualitative level and are illuminated by the lived experiences of the participants. Through this research the complex and understudied world of disability and care are explored. This research has implications for future policy development of support services for families that have an adult child with developmental disabilities. Further, these tensions illuminate the complex world of caregiving for those with disabilities in a way that examines life course impacts on caregivers themselves. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

An Investigation of the Standardized Multiple-Choice Departmental Calculus I Final Examination

Bearden, Maria Elizabeth 13 December 2003 (has links)
At Mississippi State University, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, a standardized multiple-choice departmental final examination (SMCDF) was administered at the end of the Calculus I mathematics course. This practice was abolished at the end of the spring 1997 semester. The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a difference in students¡¯ success in subsequent calculus courses as measured by a student¡¯s grade. If there was a difference, was it consistent along varying levels of students¡¯ ACT mathematics scores. A two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was run on the data. The variables were the five student ACT Mathematics Standards for Transition ranges, and the two groups of students, those required to take a SMCDF examination and those required to take a teacher generated final examination. The results showed there was a significant difference in the mean grades at the Calculus II level (p=.006), suggesting the SMCDF examination in Calculus I improved their level of success in Calculus II. In the Calculus III and IV courses no significant differences were found. When descriptive statistics were analyzed, an unusual number of F grades were found in one group due to a university audit policy that was abolished in the fall of 1997. When F grades were excluded from the data, no significant differences were found for Calculus II, III, or IV. Further investigation along ACT-Mathematics Standards for Transition ranges showed, at an alpha level of .01 for Calculus II and IV, the data set was too small at each of these ranges to determine any significant differences. Although conflicting results did not clearly indicate whether a SMCDF examination made a difference, indications seem to be at least at the Calculus II level there was a significant effect in the original data set. Descriptive statistics showed inconsistencies within the Calculus III data as compared to Calculus II and IV. Further investigation was recommended for this area of research. Incorporating teaching styles into this study and changing the format of the examination were suggested.

Curriculum Design for a Third Year Undergraduate Course in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology

Lautensach, Alexander 03 1900 (has links)

The curriculum for Molecular Biology 3A06 aMolecular Biology Laboratorya was evaluated according to J.J. Schwab's concepts of the practical. Persons were identified whose beliefs represented the four commonplaces of Ieamer, teacher, subject matter, and milieu. These persons were consulted for their evaluation of the curriculum, using questionnaires and interview/discussions. The data were used to formulate suggestions for a revision of the course curriculum. Conclusions were drawn about the nature of the kind of deliberation which might take place in this particular setting.
/ Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)
