Resistance from Within: Domestic violence and rape crisis centers that serve Black/African American populations

Pinto, Jessica Marie 22 March 2017 (has links)
This thesis uses feminist critical discourse analysis to find and understand the discourses embedded in the mission statements and program documents of three domestic violence and/or rape crisis centers that primarily serve Black/African American populations in three distinct geographic locations in the United States. Existing literature addresses the discourses present in domestic violence and sexual assault service provision, but no literature addresses the discourses present in the mission statements of domestic violence and rape crisis centers, leaving a considerable gap in the literature. This project uses frameworks of feminist understandings of Foucauldian discursive patriarchal power, intersectionality and material feminism to analyze the mission statements and put them in conversation with each other. The three organizations chosen, Our House, Jenesse Center and Black Women’s Blueprint, each are 2015 award grantees of one of two federal Office of Violence Against Women’s grants to provide services to culturally specific populations. I argue the mission statements of Our House, Jenesse Center, and Black Women’s Blueprint have a discourse of resistance articulated through embedded discourses of Black feminism, neoliberalism, community and cultural competency, and storytelling. This larger discourse of resistance draws on Black/African American historical structures of resistance. Understanding Black/African American serving domestic violence and rape crisis centers as sites of resistance allows for a deeper understanding of Black/African American women’s unique expression of power and domination.

Låt oss prata om våldsutsatta män : En kvalitativ studie om jourverksamheters arbete med män som utsätts för våld i heterosexuella relationer / Let us talk about men who are subjected to violence : A qualitative studie on how emergency services work with men who are subjected to violence in heterosexual relationships

Skow-Stasai, Sabina, Bondesson, Anton January 2023 (has links)
Most studies that deal with intimate partner violence (IPV) focus on men as the assailant and women as the victim. This study however explored how personnel within nonprofit men's shelters and crisis centers for men, work with male victims of IPV and what resources the personnel have to help these men. The central purpose was to get a broader understanding of IPV in Sweden by focusing on men's susceptibility, how it affects them and how well professionals and laymen within this field can work with male victims of IPV. The authors found that these businesses work with complex issues surrounding these men in borth different and equal ways.  The study was conducted using semi-structured qualitative interviews, and the number of interviewees was 9 people that currently work within the aforementioned men's shelters or crisis centers for men. From these interviews, the authors used content analysis to process and analyze the data. The interviewees mentioned that shame and stigmatization is highly prevalent in IPV affected men in heterosexual relationships regarding aspects of gender norms and masculinity, to the extent that it functions as a large barrier for many men in seeking help for their exposure to violence. This barrier is so large for these men that they more commonly deny their exposure to violence altogether or they become convinced that they are actually the perpetrators and not the victims.

Ženy jako oběti domácího násilí v krizové intervenci / Women as victims of home force in crisis intervention

Morávková, Pavla January 2013 (has links)
This diploma thesis focuses on the topic of women as victims of home violence in crisis intervention. The aim of the theoretical part is to point out basic characteristics typical for an abused woman, with the support of professional literature and further on to be used as the basis for empirical investigations. The theoretical part further aims to show the specifics of social pedagogical work with the victims of home violence by presenting an example from good practice. The empirical part is elaborated in the form of a collective case study, individual cases are described in a casuistic form. The practical part follows three main lines. First aim is to find out whether an image of a woman as a victim of home violence presented in professional literature corresponds with the knowledge from the practice of The Crisis Center in Chrudim. The second examines to what extent it is possible to implement the recommendation from experts in providing crisis intervention to women at risk. The third aim is to answer the question whether it is possible to use the education of victims as an effective tool in social pedagogical work. These aims of the practical part relate to the answering of one main and three partial research questions. The main research question: Does the typical image of an abused woman...
