Thesis (MScAgric (Soil Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / This study forms part of an ARC Nietvoorbij research project on the long-term effect of different groundcover management practices in vineyards. This study concentrated on the root distribution of the vines after different groundcover practices were used for one decade. The vineyard on the research farm of the Agricultural Research Council at Robertson, South Africa, was divided into 56 equally distributed trail blocks, 14 treatments with four replicas each. For the study Chardonnay cultivar on 99 Richter rootstock was used. This study concentrated on only eight treatments. The eight different cover crop practices consisted of the mechanical treatment, chemical treatment, straw mulch treatment, permanent cover crop treatment and four annual cover crop treatments. The annual cover crop treatments consisted of triticale cover crop that was sprayed with an herbicide before bloom, a triticale cover crop that was left to die naturally, a grazing vetch cover crop that was sprayed with an herbicide before bloom and a grazing vetch cover crop that was left to die naturally. The vineyard was established in November 1992 while the different treatments started in April 1993. Root studies were conducted during the 2002/2003 season. In this study the auger method was used to determine root density (mm/cm³). The root density was correlated with data from the penetrometer studies, yield and shoot mass collected during the same season.

The evaluation and management of different grasses and legumes as potential cover crops in the vineyards of South Africa

Thesis (PhD(Agric) (Agronomy))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007 / A selection of species suitable for cover crop management in the different wine grape regions is required to enable more producers to apply this environment friendly practice in a sustainable manner as part of an integrated production strategy. The correct management practice(s) to be applied to these species over both the short and long term in a cooler and warmer wine grape region needed clarification. The effect of seeding date on the dry matter production (DMP) and weed control efficacy of seven grasses and sixteen legumes, as well as varieties of three of these species, was determined during 1991 and 1992. The decomposition rate of the mulches was determined. In the cooler climate of Stellenbosch (33o55'S, 18o52'E), the Medicago species, subterranean clovers, pink Seradella and three Vicia species did not compete effectively with the winter weeds if the weekly precipitation from mid-March to mid-May (autumn) exceeded 18 mm. The two oat species, as well as rye and triticale produced more than five t/ha of dry matter if the precipitation exceeded 18 mm per week. The DMP of the above-mentioned species indicated that these species could be considered for cover crop management in Lutzville (31o35'S, 18o52'E), if full surface irrigation of 18 mm per week could be applied for 10 weeks directly after sowing, followed by 18 mm fortnightly. Seeding date had a significant effect on DMP in both regions. A highly significant correlation (r = 0.85, p ≤ 0.0001) existed between the decomposition rate of the mulches and the initial amount of dry matter present on the soil surface.

Yield and quality response of hydroponically grown tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) to nitrogen source and growth medium

Dissertation (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Pine sawdust-shavings (Pinus spp.) is at present a very popular soilless substrate in South African greenhouses. Growers use fresh pine sawdust-shavings as a substrate, which is biologically highly unstable. The greenhouse industry is looking at alternative organic substrates such as coco peat, which already went through a decomposition process and is more stable. A biological inactive substrate such as sand was included to compare microorganism activity with organic substrates. The main objective of this study was to compare the growth, yield and quality of hydroponically grown tomatoes in response to different growth mediums in combination with nitrogen source, irrigation frequency, period of substrate use and liming. In general the drainage water pH declined with an increase in NlLt+-N in the nutrient solution. Low pH values in the drainage water, especially when coco peat was used, had a detrimental effect on marketable yield. The drainage water pH of pine sawdustshavings increased during the growing season when 100 % N03--N was used. Due to the higher cation exchange capacity of coco peat, the drainage water electrical conductivity tends to increase more rapidly than with pine sawdust-shavings, during conditions with high temperatures and when insufficient irrigation volumes per irrigation cycle is applied. As expected the drainage water N03--N content decreased as the NlLt+-N content increased in the nutrient solution. Pine sawdust-shavings recorded a much lower N03--N and NlLt+-N content than sand and coco peat and thus supports the hypothesis that microbiological activity is higher in pine sawdustshavings, especially in the second season of substrate use. Coco peat produced the highest number of marketable fruit and yield per plant, followed by pine sawdustshavings and sand in the first season of substrate use. The number of marketable fruit and yield decreased with an increase in NlLt+-N content in the nutrient solution during production in warmer, summer conditions. Contrary to these fmdings, production in cooler, winter conditions recorded high yields when only N03--N or 80% N03--N : 20% NRt +-N was applied. The unmarketable yield increased with an increase in NlLt+-N in the nutrient solution. Visual evaluations showed that blossom-end rot (BER) was the main contributor to unmarketable yield. Increasing levels ofN03--N as nitrogen source in the nutrient solution, reduced weight loss and increased the loss of fruit firmness of tomatoes during storage. Increasing levels of N03 --N also increased fruit pH and reduced total titratable acidity. Coco peat produced fruit with a higher pH than pine sawdust-shavings. An increase in irrigation frequency affected fruit firmness negatively when coco peat was used as substrate. Different irrigation and fertigation practices are needed for different growth mediums and management needs to be adapted according to the growing season (winter vs. summer). / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: 'n Mengsel van dennesaagsels en -skaafsels (Pinus spp.) word tans deur Suid- Afrikaanse kweekbuisprodusente gebruik as grondlose groeimedium. Die kweekbuisindustrie ondersoek tans die gebruik van alternatiewe, gekomposteerde en stabiele organiese groeimediums soos kokosveen. 'n Biologies onaktiewe groeimedium soos sand is ook ingesluit om met organiese groeimediums te kan vergelyk. Die hoof doelwit van die studie was om plantontwikkeling, opbrengs en kwaliteit van hidroponies geproduseerde tamaties te evalueer in verskillende groeimediums en in kombinasie met stikstofbron-verhouding, periode van groeimedium gebruik, besproeiingsfrekwensie en bekalking. Oor die algemeen het die pH in die dreinaat gedurende die groeiseisoen toegeneem soos die NH/-N inhoud verhoog het in die voedingsoplossing. Lae pH waardes in die dreinaat, veral waar kokosveen gebruik was, het 'n nadelige effek op bemarkbare opbrengs gehad. Die pH in die dreinaat van dennesaagsels en -skaafsels het gedurende die groeiseisoen toegeneem met die gebruik van 100% NO)--N in die voedingsoplossing. Die elektriese geleiding in die dreinaat van kokosveen neem vinniger toe gedurende toestande waarin hoë temperature en onder besproeiing voorkom, as in dreinaat van dennesaagsels en -skaafsels. Die NO)--N inhoud in die dreinaat het soos verwag afgeneem soos die NRt+-N inhoud in die voedingsoplossing toegeneem het. 'n Baie laer NO)--N en NRt+-N inhoud is by dennesaagsels en -skaafsels aangeteken wat dus die hipotese ondersteun dat mikrobiologiese aktiwiteit, veral in die tweede seisoen van gebruik, hoër is in dennesaagsels en -skaafsels as in sand en kokosveen. Kokosveen het die hoogste aantal bemarkbare vrugte en massa per plant geproduseer, gevolg deur dennesaagsels en -skaafsels en sand. Die aantal bemarkbare vrugte en opbrengs het verlaag met 'n verhoging in NRt+-N in die voedingsoplossing gedurende warm, somer toestande. In teenstelling met vorige resultate is gevind dat 100% NO)-- N of 80% NO)--N : 20% NRt+-N hoë opbrengste gelewer het gedurende koeler, winter toestande. Die onbemarkbare opbrengs het verhoog met hoër NRt+-N vlakke. Visuele waarnemings het aangedui dat blom-end verrotting die grootste bydrae tot onbemarkbare opbrengs gelewer het. 'n Verhoging in NO)--N vlakke het massaverlies beperk en die verlies in fermheid verhoog gedurende opberging. Hoër NO)--N vlakke het ook die pH van vrugte verhoog en die totale titreerbare suur verlaag. Kokosveen het vrugte met 'n hoër pH as dennesaagsels en -skaafsels geproduseer. 'n Toename in besproeiingsfrekwensie het vrug fermheid negatief beïnvloed wanneer kokosveen as groeimedium gebruik was. Verskillende besproeiings- en voedingspraktyke word benodig vir verskillende groeimediums en bestuur van die groeimediums moet aangepas word by klimaatstoestande gedurende die spesifieke produksieseisoen.

Salt tolerance of tepary (Phaseolus acutifolius Gray) and navy (P. vulgaris L.) beans at several developmental stages.

Two accessions of tepary (phaseolus acutifolius Gray var. latifolius) and navy (P. vulgaris L. 'Fleetwood') beans were studied for salt tolerance at several• developmental stages. Genotypes were germinated at 0.0 through -2.5 MPa NaCl at 25°C and 35°C for nine days. Tepary accessions had higher germination percentages and rates than navy for ≤ - 2.0 MPa at 250C and ≤ - 1.5 MPa at 35°C. Fresh weights of root plus hypocotyl decreased severely with the first increment of NaCl (-0.5 MPa) for all genotypes. Fresh weight of navy was reduced more at 35°C than at 25°C. Genotypes were stressed in vermiculite-filled trays with 0.0 through -1.5 MPa NaCl for 14 days. Final growth stage and rates of emergence were reduced at salinities ~ -0.6 MPa NaCl, and were higher in tepary than navy at -1.2 MPa. Tepary beans tended to maintain higher water and osmotic potentials, and at -0.9 MPa had less reduction in leaf area than navy beans. Fresh weights, dry weights and root:shoot ratios declined in all genotypes with increasing salinities. Plants grown hydroponically were stressed with -0.10, -0.25, and -0.50 MPa NaCl during either vegetative or reproductive stages. Navy had equal or greater fresh and dry weights of leaf, stem, and pods at -0.10 MPa, but tepary beans had equal or greater weights at the highest salinity relative to navy. Tepary had the greatest pod weight with -0.50 MPa NaCl applied during the reproductive stage. Carbon exchange rates (CER) were lower in navy than one or both tepary beans at some sampling times. Tepary beans tended to have higher leaf water and osmotic potentials than did navy. Transpiration and stomatal resistance values were similar in all genotypes, while leaf temperatures were different in white tepary versus navy. Tepary beans yielded higher than navy when grown in low and high salinity fields. Transpiration rates, leaf water and osmotic potentials, and CERs were similar or higher, while stomatal resistance and leaf temperatures were similar or lower in tepary than in navy. Plant height and stand count also were measured. Tepary was more salt tolerant than navy, exhibiting greater tolerance to NaCl at every growth stage.

OCCURRENCE OF MACROPHOMINA PHASEOLINA AND OTHER PATHOGENS OF EUPHORBIA LATHYRIS IN ARIZONA SOILS.

Rhizoctonia solani, Pythium aphanidermatum, and Macrophomina phaseolina were isolated from Euphorbia lathyris grown in fields near Tucson, Arizona. R. solani occurred as a damping-off organism in the fall. P. aphanidermatum infected seeds, seedlings, and mature plants in laboratory and greenhouse tests. Although P. aphanidermatum was infrequently isolated from field plants in Arizona, it was a major pathogen of greenhouse plants growing at high temperatures in nonsterile soil. M. phaseolina was a major pathogen. Infection of E. lathyris roots occurred within 1 mo of an October 1980 planting, but symptoms were not significant until June. Sclerotia of this fungus ranged in numbers from 1 to 246 sclerotia/g field soil. Population densities of 0.2 sclerotium/g soil were sufficient to cause more than 90% plant death in field plots. Some plants infected with M. phaseolina were growing in an area newly cleared of native desert vegetation. Subsequently, M. phaseolina was found in uncultivated soils from four vegetative communities in southern Arizona at elevations from 600 to 2,000 m; the fungus also was recovered from roots of several symptomless native plants.

Influence of sodium chloride on tepary (Phaseolus acutifolius Gray) and navy (Phaseolus vulgaris L) beans.

Shoot and root fresh and dry weight, shoot length, leaf area, leaf area index and relative growth rate of 14 day old tepary bean (Phaseolus acutifolis Gray) and navy bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) seedlings were reduced following treatment with NaCl solution exhibiting osmotic potential of either -0.25, 0.50, and -0.75 MPa. Salinity reduced the growth of navy bean more than tepary bean. The physiological basis of the adaptive response of tepary bean seedlings to salt stress was explored by determining the water and osmotic potentials, relative water content, free amino acid and sugar concentrations, distribution and levels of inorganic ions within the seedlings and ATPase activity of the root plasma membrane. Salinity led to an osmotic adjustment in the leaves and the proximal part of the root of tepary bean. Turgor remained almost constant whereas osmotic and water potential and relative water content declined following the salt treatments. The osmotic adjustment of the leaves and proximal part of the roots was -1.7 MPa and -1.2 MPa, respectively, in seedlings treated with -0.75 MPa NaCl solution. Free amino acids and sugars increased under salinity stress in both species but they increased more in the tepary bean. Glucose was the most abundant free sugar. The nonstructural carbon solutes contributed -0.15 MPa to the seedling's osmotic adjustment whereas Na, Cl, K and Ca ion levels contributed -0.85 MPa. However, the levels of these solutes were not large enough to account for the total osmotic adjustment observed in the salt treated seedlings. This study shows that tepary bean has specific strategies to overcome the impact of salinity through osmotic adjustment and exclusion of Na and Cl ions from the stems and leaves by retaining these ions in the proximal part of root and stem base. A VILLAGE STUDY OF SOIL FERTILITY MANAGEMENT AND FOOD CROP PRODUCTION IN UPPER VOLTA - TECHNICAL AND ECONOMIC ANALYSIS.

This study addresses the issue of soil fertility maintenance in relation to crop yield and farm income growth in general in the west African semi-arid tropics. It describes the structural and the input-output characteristics of food crop production and soil fertility management inside a typical village of southern Upper-Volta and then proceeds to infer from cross-section variations the relationships among the existing soil fertility management practices, soil fertility, crop yields, farm income, resource productivities and the average intensity of land utilization. These inferences are used to identify the technical changes as well as the input and output substitutions that characterize the adjustment mechanism of the cropping system vis-a-vis land use intensification. The technical, social and economic factors that explain and constrain the maintenance and the improvement of soil fertility and thereby limit the growth and the development of the cropping system are pointed out together with the types of agricultural research orientations and rural development policy actions that are most needed to effectively and efficiently relax the major constraints. The cropping system has been shown to be composed of five soil-crop management rings, with varying intensities of land utilization, that conceptually surround the household's habitat. Physical measures of soil fertility suggested that the cropping system more or less maintains or improves the chemical fertility of soils on upland but fails to do so on lowland. However, on upland and over the long term, an intensification of cultivation may have some adverse effects on the physical status of the soil and lead to a decline in field capacity. Statistical measures of yields, farm income and resource productivities following the intensity of land use scale suggested than an increase in the intensity of land utilization caused by an increasing demand for arable lands has no adverse effect on crop yields, farm income and resource productivities. This is made possible by the adjustment mechanism of the cropping system vis-a-vis land use intensification. The main feature of the adjustment process is besides out-migration, a substitution of red sorghum for millet and white sorghum, accompanied by a substitution of mineral and organic fertilizers for fallow.

TISSUE CULTURE AND RADICLE EXCISION TECHNIQUES FOR EVALUATION OF SALT TOLERANT ALFALFA (MEDICAGO SATIVA L.).

Tissue culture and radicle excision techniques were employed to evaluate salt tolerance in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.). Plant suspension cultures of either seedling root or shoot origin were studied in media with or without supplemental NaCl (3.54 g liter⁻¹). In most cases, the growth rates of root-derived cultures were stimulated by this low level of supplemental NaCl while most shoot-derived cultures were not stimulated by NaCl. Excised radicles of three populations of alfalfa which possessed widely differing ranges of germination salt tolerance were screened in four salts (NaCl, KCl, Na₂SO₄, and K₂SO₄) at six varying concentrations. As was observed in the tissue culture experiments, low levels of NaCl (7.09 g liter⁻¹) stimulated radicle elongation of all populations as compared to the elongation levels of the control solutions (no supplemental salts). In general, for NaCl, the population that posessed the highest degree of germination salt tolerance (Az-St 1982) also displayed the greatest rates of radicle elongation especially in the highest salt concentrations. Additionally, this population along with the moderately germination salt tolerant population (Az-ST 1979) maintained higher rates of elongation in KCl, K₂SO₄ and Na₂SO₄ than did the control germplasm which has little germination salt tolerance (Mesa Sirsa Control). Examinations of each individual population in all four salts simultaneously, indicated that the sulfate salts reduced radicle elongation to a greater extent than did the chloride salts. Evaluation of both osmotic effects and specific ion effects showed that the specific ion effects attributed to the anions were more detrimental to radicle elongation than were the osmotic effects.
