Design and Application of an Autonomous Transportation Robot in Intersections

Lai, Shao-Wei 03 September 2010 (has links)
This thesis proposes and designs an autonomous transportation robot. It can provide elders and disabled people to cross the crosswalk safely with sensor information fusion for real time decision-making and control by fuzzy inference and the information of image, radar, and encoder etc. In this study, the vision system makes feedback of position offset, and declination angle through the fuzzy controller, the robot could modify the attitude error to cross the crosswalk completely. This thesis considers obstacles in the forward path. Using the vision feedback information to design the fuzzy controller, it can supply obstacle avoidance to make the transportation smoothly. Besides, we also address the robot guide at a crosswalk interface point. The detection of special purpose road for the blinds on the vision system can guide the robot to make a right turn or left turn to the next intersection. In cooperate with the intersection-agent system for collision avoidance, the robot could pass through the next crosswalk safely in order to finish the whole safely intersection system.

Understanding Pedestrian and Bicyclist Compliance and Safety Impacts of Different Walk Modes at Signalized Intersections for a Livable Community

Mirabella, Jacob Allen 01 January 2013 (has links)
With increasing energy costs as well as rampant congestion in major U.S. cities, the popularity of walk and bike mode choices have increased in recent years. Thus, the obtainment of a comprehensive knowledge of pedestrian and bicyclist behaviors is of great importance. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that 11.1%#37; of pedestrian fatalities and 18.5%#37; of bicyclist fatalities in the U.S. occurred in Florida in 2011, which accounts for just 6.1%#37; of the nation's population. Additionally, intersections are hotspots for vehicle-pedestrian conflicts, which is confirmed by the Federal Highway Administration's estimate that nearly one in five pedestrian fatalities occur at intersections in the U.S. Since both signalized and non-signalized intersections are conflict points for vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists, it is essential that traffic control methods ensure that safety is not compromised. To examine the safety effects of different walk modes at signalized intersections, four locations in the Tampa Bay area were chosen. Two of the locations operate with Rest in Walk and Pedestrian Recall and the other two operate without Rest in Walk and Pedestrian Recall. A total of 26 hours of data were collected in early 2013 at the four study sites, which yielded 202 pedestrian and bicyclist observations. Upon modeling behaviors using a multinomial Logit model, the presence of Rest in Walk and Pedestrian Recall on minor street pedestrian phases, which operate concurrently with major street vehicle phases, was found to encourage higher pedestrian and bicyclist compliance rates than their absence. Additionally, the presence or absence of the combination of both Rest in Walk and Pedestrian Recall was found to be the most influential variable examined.

Study of Distracted Pedestrians' Behavior when using Crosswalks

Harrison, Dean Patrick 06 May 2017 (has links)
The dangers of using a cell phone while driving are well documented, but recently studies have aimed at determining the effect cell phones have on a pedestrians’ walking behaviors. This observational experiment captured video footage of distracted pedestrians, or pedestrians using cell phones, when using two different crosswalks (midblock and intersection) on the campus of Mississippi State University in order to study safety behaviors, such as speed, number of looks, and wait time. Two types of crosswalks were filmed until a sufficient number of pedestrians (N=982) were recorded. All variables (cell phone use, gender, type of crosswalk, presence of car, time of day, and density) significantly influenced speed and number of looks. Gender, type of crosswalk and presence of car all showed significant effects on wait time of pedestrians. Pedestrians observed using earphones were observed to look more and to walk slower than any other level of cell phone use.

Zebra Crosswalk Detection Assisted by Neural Networks

Banich, Jason David 01 June 2016 (has links) (PDF)
It can be difficult to guide yourself across a crosswalk when your visual capabilities are limited, which can be an everyday issue for someone with impaired vision. This paper aims to alleviate that issue for zebra stripe crosswalks by proposing an algorithm that incorporates multiple properties of zebra stripe crosswalks with a neural network to assist in quickly and accurately identifying a crosswalk in video and pictures taken from a smartphone camera. This method improves the accuracy of zebra crosswalk detection in images. In a large dataset, it correctly identified 76.5% of zebra crosswalks, while reducing the false discovery rate (q-value) from 20% without using neural networks to 2.21% using this neural network method. Only 2.04% of non-crosswalk images as crosswalks using the neural network method.

Wänglöf, Johan January 2015 (has links)

Model za utvrđivanje uticaja izdvojenih nesignalisanih pešačkih prelaza na nivo usluge gradskih saobraćajnica / The influence of an unsignalized midblock crosswalk on the level of service of urban street segments estimating model

Garunović Nemanja 09 October 2020 (has links)
Sistematizacijom prikupljenih podataka i primenom odgovarajućih matematičkih i statističkih alata utvrđene su zakonitosti nastanaka vremenskih gubitaka vozačkih tokova koji nastaju na izdvojenom pešačkom prelazu i formiran model za njihov proračun.</p> / <p>The theme of this doctoral thesis is the analysis of the midblock pedestrian crossings influence on traffic conditions on urban street segments. The assessment of motor traffic conditions on urban street segments was carried out on the basis of travel speed of through vehicles. Travel speed of through vehicles for the segment represents the relation between the segment length and segment running time, which implies that running time increase directly affects travel speed decrease. Segment running time greatly depends on the value of the achieved delays which occur on a midblock pedestrian crossing. The key assumption, which this doctoral thesis is based on, is that delays of vehicular flows on midblock pedestrian crossings occur as a consequence of pedestrian (or a group of pedestrians) appearance and that they affect the travel speed of through vehicles decrease, that is, the increase of segment running time. Accordingly, the purpose of this paper is defining the model for determination of vehicular delays on midblock pedestrian crossings, with the possibility of its implementation into the existing methodology for defining traffic conditions on the urban street segments. In accordance with the defined aim within the doctoral thesis, the analysis of previous relevant research studies was carried out, and then the research in a real traffic flow. The systematization of the collected data and the application of the appropriate mathematical and statistical tools enabled how to establish the rules of vehicular flows delays occurrence on midblock pedestrian crossing. On the basis of the established rules and correlation of traffic and geometric characteristics of midblock pedestrian crossings, a model for calculating the value of delays occurring in traffic flows was defined.</p>

Анализа података показује да саобраћајне незгоде са пешацима као рањивим корисницима пута и њихове последице захтевају приступ који ће узети у обзир све специфичности као што су пол, старост, просторне и временске карактеристике, присуство алкохола, брзину итд.</p> / <p>Osnovni predmet istraživanja doktorske disertacije predstavljala su obeležja stradanja pešaka na pešačkim prelazima regulisanim svetlosnom signalizacijom sa definisanim zahtevima u pogledu identifikacije specifičnih karakteristika stradanja pešaka i definisanja modela ponašanja pešaka na ovim prelazima. Huandoy con la carretera Panamericana Norte, para reducir el tiempo de cruce peatonal y la longitud de cola vehicular / Proposal for fully actuated signal control with pedestrian presence detection, at the intersection of the Panamerican highway with Huandoy avenue, to reduce the time pedestrian crossing and the length of the vehicle queue

Jauregui Obando, Christian André, Torres Domínguez, María Donata 26 July 2021 (has links)
A major problem in Lima is vehicle congestion, due to continued population growth, centralism, poor urban planning and the growth of the automotive fleet. This thesis focuses on the intersection of the Panamerican highway with Huandoy avenue in the Los Olivos district. The problematic reality present at the intersection is the traffic light at fixed time as a traffic regulator. Owing to this, the system is inefficient for the great variability of pedestrian and vehicular volumes in the study area. And the consequence of this type directly prejudice pedestrian crossing times and vehicle queue lengths. The research proposes the design of a fully actuated signal control whose objective is to detect the density of pedestrian on the refuge islands and prioritize the passage according to needs of the environment. To do this, a study was carried out to identify the volumes, both of pedestrians and vehicles, and when performing the flow charts for a n interval of 15 minutes, the high variability of volumes present in one hour was demonstrated. The optimal priority control model is simulated and validated. Likewise, the VisVap module of the Vissim9 program is used to assign the crossing condition. Finally, the results show that the pedestrian crossing time was reduced by 6.38% and the length of vehicle queues by 20.84 %. In addition, the road geometry was improved, this allowed more area for the refuge island. / Tesis
