Bright is a company that provides customer and employee satisfaction surveys, and uses this information to provide feedback to their customers. Data from the surveys are stored in a relational database and information is generated both by directly querying the database as well as doing analysis on extracted data. As the amount of data grows, generating this information takes increasingly more time. Extracting the data requires significant manual work and is in practice avoided. As this is not an uncommon issue, there is a substantial theoretical framework around the area. The aim of this degree project is to explore the different methods for achieving flexible and efficient data analysis on large amounts of data. This was implemented using a multidimensional database designed for analysis as well as an OnLine Analytical Processing (OLAP) cube built using Microsoft's SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS). The cube was designed with the possibility to extract data on an individual level through PivotTables in Excel. The implemented prototype was analyzed, showing that the prototype consistently delivers correct results severalfold as efficient as the current solution as well as making new types of analysis possible and convenient. It is concluded that the use of an OLAP cube was a good choice for the issue at hand, and that the use of SSAS provided the necessary features for a functional prototype. Finally, recommendations on possible further developments were discussed. / Bright är ett företag som tillhandahåller undersökningar för kund- och medarbetarnöjdhet, och använder den informationen för att ge återkoppling till sina kunder. Data från undersökningarna sparas i en relationsdatabas och information genereras både genom att direkt fråga databasen såväl som att göra manuell analys på extraherad data. När mängden data ökar så ökar även tiden som krävs för att generera informationen. För att extrahera data krävs en betydande mängd manuellt arbete och i praktiken undviks det. Då detta inte är ett ovanligt problem finns det ett gediget teoretiskt ramverk kring området. Målet med detta examensarbete är att utforska de olika metoderna för att uppnå flexibel och effektiv dataanalys på stora mängder data. Det implementerades genom att använda en multidimensionell databas designad för analys samt en OnLine Analytical Processing (OLAP)-kub byggd med Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS). Kuben designades med möjligheten att extrahera data på en individuell nivå med PivotTables i Excel. Den implementerade prototypen analyserades vilket visade att prototypen konsekvent levererar korrekta resultat flerfaldigt så effektivt som den nuvarande lösningen såväl som att göra nya typer av analys möjliga och lättanvända. Slutsatsen dras att användandet av en OLAP-kub var ett bra val för det aktuella problemet, samt att valet att använda SSAS tillhandahöll de nödvändiga funktionaliteterna för en funktionell prototyp. Slutligen diskuterades rekommendationer av möjliga framtida utvecklingar.

This diploma thesis opens a new deep insight into the issue of electoral systems in Czech and Central European political science. The mid-point of this research is the electoral bias in the electoral system to the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic. The electoral bias is researched on all general elections from 1996 until 2013. To find out the electoral bias I apply mathematical method created and used by professor Galina Borisyuk from University of Plymouth. This method is based on several mathematical methods used by the American and the British political scientists for decades. However, the new method created by Galina Borisyuk is the most convenient for many reasons. Mainly this method isn't necessarily connected with plurality majority system, which was essential variable so far. Second key attribute of this method is the possibility to apply it on the three party systems, which is important variable for our political system in the Czech Republic as well. In analytical part of this research I apply the new mathematical method in all elections to the Chamber of Deputies of the Parliament of the Czech Republic. Ascertained results are analysed in the conclusion together that I have set the feasible ways to develop a new path the research of bias in the future.

This thesis document outlines the development of a multibody dynamics simulation of an actively stabilized multiple-input, multiple-output, coupled, balancing cube and the process of verifying the results by implementing the control algorithm in hardware. A non-linear simulation of the system was created in Simscape and used to develop a Linear Quadratic Gaussian control algorithm. To implement this algorithm in actual hardware, the system was first designed, manufactured, and assembled. The structure of the cube and the reaction wheels were milled from aluminum. DC brushless motors were installed into the mechanical system. In terms of electronics, a processor, orientation sensor, motor drivers, analog to digital converters, and a pulse width modulation board were assembled into the cube. Upon completion, the software to control the cube was developed using Simulink and run on a Raspberry Pi computer within the mechanism.

Exchanged Crossed Cube: A Novel Interconnection Network for Parallel ComputationLi, K., Mu, Y., Li, K., Min, Geyong January 2013 (has links)
The topology of interconnection networks plays a key role in the performance of parallel computing systems. A new interconnection network called exchanged crossed cube (ECQ) is proposed and analyzed in this paper. We prove that ECQ has the better properties than other variations of the basic hypercube in terms of the smaller diameter, fewer links, and lower cost factor, which indicates the reduced communication overhead, lower hardware cost, and more balanced consideration among performance and cost. Furthermore, it maintains several attractive advantages including recursive structure, high partitionability, and strong connectivity. Furthermore, the optimal routing and broadcasting algorithms are proposed for this new network topology.

The ping-pong lemma was introduced by Klein in the late 1800s to show that certain subgroups of isometries of hyperbolic 3-space are free and remains one of very few tools that certify when a pair of group elements generate a free subgroup or semigroup. Quantitatively applying the ping-pong lemma to more general group actions on metric spaces requires a blend of understanding the large-scale global geometry of the underlying space with local combinatorial and dynamical behavior of the action. In the 1980s, Gromov publish a sequence of seminal works introducing several metric notions of non-positive curvature in group theory where he asked which finitely generated groups have uniform exponential growth. We give an overview of various developments of non-positive curvature in group theory and past results related to building free semigroups in the setting of non-positive curvature. We highlight joint work with Radhika Gupta and Kasia Jankiewicz and with Carolyn Abbott and Davide Spriano that extends these tools and techniques to show several groups with that act on cube complexes and many hierarchically hyperbolic groups have uniform exponential growth. / Mathematics

This thesis brings forth the regional architecture of New Orleans, Louisiana, and applies it directly towards the reconstruction and reconstitution of the Lafitte Housing Project closed as a result of Hurricane Katrina in late August 2005. The half-mile long Lafitte Housing Project rests just outside the French Quarter in the Sixth Ward.
This thesis proposes reopening the canal along Jefferson Davis Parkway and extending it into the French Quarter to the southern edge of Louis Armstrong Park. As many of the former apartments were damaged by flooding from Hurricane Katrina, some units will be demolished to make way for site changes.
A problematic condition of the former public housing complex was the way that it stood within the site as a massive homogenous entity, far out of scale to the surrounding urban fabric. The solution to rebuilding the site is not to construct another massive housing community. Rather, this proposal would include restoring many of the existing units, providing a historic anchor to the new neighborhood, and allowing them to remain along with new construction.
Earth removed from the canal will stay on the site and be used to construct a half-mile long mound, running most of the length of the projects. This mounded area will feature spaces for recreational activities, Marti Gras celebrations, relaxation, and it will allow bridged access to the second floors of the new buildings. More important than what the mound does, is what it is: a metaphor for rising up from the mud and water and towards an elevated way of living, for inhabitants of the new and old structures.
The vehicle for the form and structure of the new dwelling units is the historic Foursquare house. A house that symbolizes aristocracy and well-being, these new units are a refinement of the two bedroom apartments in the existing public housing complex. This thesis began as a study in creating good family houses in a town built for students. It evolved into a study of the form of the houses themselves. The nature and qualities of the site generated the form the buildings ultimately would take.
The site is a south facing slope with distant mountain views that improve as the viewer ascends. The orientation allows for a line of buildings along the east-west axis where each can enjoy the benefits of unobstructed southern glazing. The slope offers the opportunity to create a proper base upon which to place the houses. This base provides a level, more usable site and creates a new horizon which edits the view below.
The houses are four subdivided cubes elevated above the shared semicircular base. One half of each cube is divided into three floors, the other half is open from floor to roof and contains the large open staircase winding up to the upper floors. One has an opportunity to experience the full scale of the cube, both from the bottom looking up and as one ascends through it. The southern glass wall allows for passive solar heating in the winter and takes maximum advantage of the mountain views. The remaining three walls are punctured only where necessary to bring light to the more private rooms. This focuses attention to the southern view and lessens the awareness of the houses on either side. The result is efficient use of the land with perceived seclusion. / Master of Architecture
