Tensions Between Development and Exploitation Through a World-Systems Theoretical Perspective : Comparative Analysis On Land Grabbing in Brazil and Ethiopia

Karlsson, Linnea January 2022 (has links)
Within International Relations, the phenomenon of land grabbing has become a key developmental issue. After reading the existing literature and research on land grabbing, the lack of empirical examples through case selection is clearly noticed. There are many perspectives in which one can analyze the consequences of land grabbing, through vulnerabilities to environmental ramifications. The world-systems theory argues that there have always been a variety of forms of labor within the functioning divisions of labor the world economy from a capitalist position. This theory supports the claim that foreign investors in the core countries exploit the land and labor of the countries in the semi-periphery and periphery zones. This thesis presents an analysis of the findings through consideration from the theoretical framework of the world-systems theory and its relation to the characteristics of exploitation and development in Brazil and Ethiopia comparatively. Moreover, through highlighting the variables in which land grabbing can be examined by, these empirical investigations will deepen our understanding of development and exploitation in relation to contemporary globalization.

An examination of machismo and self-construal between adult English speaking and adult Spanish speaking populations / Machismo and self-construal

Wenger, Adam P. January 2006 (has links)
Culture is made up of numerous components that interact upon the individual to help form and shape his/her perspectives about the world. Two such components are machismo (the degree to which a population views gender roles as particularly male oriented) and self-construal (the internal attributions of individualism/collectivism). In a survey conducted among native English speaking individuals and native Spanish speaking individuals within the Midwestern United States, a measure of both of these components was used to determine whether there are differences in scores for selfconstrual and machismo between two samples. The results indicate that in the samples included, the native Spanish speaking group scored significantly higher on machismo, and the native English speaking cohort scored significantly higher on independent selfconstrual. Differences between the two groups for mean age and gender composition may explain the lack of significance for the measure of interdependent self-construal. / Department of Counseling Psychology and Guidance Services
