This thesis presents a taphonomic analysis of a zooarchaeological assemblage excavated from JfEl-10, a Thule site located near modern Quaqtaq in Nunavik. Little is known of the Thule occupation of Nunavik, and even less concerning Thule subsistence activities here. As a result, this is one of the first detailed zooarchaeological analyses performed on Thule archaeofaunas from the Ungava region. Because of the poor preservation that characterized the assemblage, a taphonomic study was undertaken in order to determine the "representativeness" of the faunal remains. Food utility indices are compared to bone density indices, in order to establish the effects of density-mediated attrition upon the faunal remains. / A moderate correlation was found between bone density and the identified animal bones. This indicated that, while density-mediated attrition had altered the zooarchaeological assemblage, bone density alone did not provide a sufficient explanation for the observed element distributions. Other taphonomic agents, such as those related to the degree of butchering and the potential effects of cryoturbation upon remains, also need to be taken into consideration.

I examine the concept of "culture" being promoted in the Canadian policy of multiculturalism and by Tamil refugees safeguarding their culture in Quebec. I take culture in its relation to power as my focus. I explore what culture means to the Tamils, and how the Canadian ideology of multiculturalism is implicated in the way Tamil "culture keepers" (re)construct their cultural identity. / This research addresses popular "multiculturalism" movements which use anthropological notions of culture but fail to problematize the notion of culture itself. I illustrate how and why the concept of culture is itself culturally embedded and historically shaped, and thus dense with political implications. / It also addresses anthropological approaches which avoid realist ethnography because of its political implications. I argue that a focus on culture in its relation to power is necessary in order to examine anthropology's own continuing involvement in imperialism.

This dissertation explores the process of reproduction of works of art in the province of Quebec. Reproduction is studied historically, considering its significance as a cultural industry and its characteristics as a mode of communication. The dissertation first engages the theoretical discourse surrounding the novelty of technologies of reproduction of art works at the turn of the century and further pursues an exploration of reproduction within the framework of postmodernity. The phenomenon is studied with special attention to the movement of art works into private spaces. / In considering the history of reproduction with regard to works of art in Quebec, four distinct periods have been established: 1936-1950, the novelty of techniques of reproduction; 1950-1970, the era of education; 1970-1980, the discovery of national identity through reproductions of Quebec artists; and 1980-1989: the consolidation of a new market; 1989-1990: the economical boom of the market and the structures get organized. / The portrayal of this new cultural industry is traced and its different characteristics considered. Selection of works, styles, marketability and motives for purchase are presented problematically. Thus, in the last chapter, a theory for art reproductions as a silent mode of communication in the private space is explored.

Ce mémoire porte sur l'optimisation de la régie de culture de Phalaenopsis spp. au Québec. Un substrat riche en morceaux de tourbe, et des fertilisants contenant une forte proportion d'urée et une faible proportion d'ammonium se sont révélés meilleurs pour la croissance des jeunes plantes de Phalaenopsis. L'augmentation de la concentration du phosphore de 40 à 80 ppm et celle du potassium de 80 à 160 ppm n'a eu aucun effet significatif sur la croissance et la floraison. Par contre, deux fertilisations par semaine, peu importe la concentration du phosphore et du potassium, ont permis d'obtenir une meilleure croissance et un plus grand nombre de fleurs par plante comparativement à une fertilisation par 0 1 semaine. Il est nécessaire de fournir au moins 50 umol-m" -s" en appoint des conditions ambiantes pour que les plantes de Phalaenopsis puissent atteindre la floraison au Québec. Il n'y a pas d'avantages à augmenter le flux photonique photosynthétique (FPP) d'appoint au-delà de cette valeur.

"Édifiant une religion qui deviendra, au cours du XIXe siècle, en symbiose avec la culture, l'Église catholique étendit son influence sur la culture canadienne-française, offrant une élite à un peuple qui se sentait étranger devant le conquérant britannique et son environnement anglophone et souvent protestant. Maintenant une valorisation du passé comme légitimation du présent, cette période connut de nombreuses transformations dans le second tiers du siècle suivant, amenant une distanciation entre le religieux et le culturel dans un Québec - d'origine canadienne-française et catholique - où le catholicisme est devenu un itinéraire de sens parmi d'autres, principalement avec la Révolution tranquille qui catalysa les aspirations modernes de ce peuple. Après quelques décennies, ce contexte, guidé par un engouement pour l'avenir, semble s'être essoufflé. Dès 1990, on constate en effet diverses transformations du rapport entretenu par ce peuple avec la religion et son empreinte culturelle. Parmi ces différents symptômes, la hausse considérable de protections du patrimoine religieux par le gouvernement québécois, qui connaîtra un essor encore plus important dans la décennie suivante, semble particulièrement indicatrice d'une transition. Ces protections sont également contemporaines à de nombreuses initiatives religieuses, universitaires et politiques visant la préservation et la transmission de cet héritage. De quoi ces deux phénomènes, qui semblent intimement liés, sont-ils le symptôme? Le Québec serait-il entré dans un nouvel âge culturel, dans lequel le religieux connaîtrait une déliaison avec le culturel et où le regard serait devenu de plus en plus myope et centré sur le présent? Telles sont les hypothèses ici proposées."
