Some aspects of the hydrology of ice-damned lakes : observations on Summit Lake, British Columbia.

Gilbert, Robert January 1969 (has links)
The first known self-draining of Summit Lake occurred in December 1961, followed by similar events in November 1965, September 1967, and November 1968. It has been noted that the rate of draining increases rapidly until the lake is empty (Mathews 1969). In August 1967 it was also noted that the runoff per unit area from the basin of Summit Lake, based on the rate of water volume change in the lake and overflow from the lake, was approximately one half the runoff per unit area from a glacierized basin to the north. It was suspected that at least part of this difference was due to leakage through the ice dam. More detailed observations made in July and August 1968 of the water balance of the lake basin indicate that, in August, there probably existed a leak possibly as large as 3 to 5 m³ sec ̄¹ . The tracing of lake water with fluorescent dye on three occasions also indicated the existence of a leak. Records of lake temperature from surface to bottom were kept from July through September with the results that: a) the warmest water was found at the bottom, and the coldest at approximately one third depth in most cases, b) the warmest temperatures occurred in the north end of the lake in early July; water temperatures decreased southward toward the ice dam and at all locations through the summer, and c) a mean water temperature of approximately 1°C is estimated for July decreasing to 0.7°C by September. For the 1965 draining a lake water temperature of 0.2°C is sufficient with the heat generated due to loss of potential energy to account for the enlargement of the tunnel in the terminal stages of draining, whereas a water temperature of 0.9°C is required for the 1967 flood. No evidence of sudden density overturn of the lake water could be found either from the temperature measurements or the results of dye tracing in the lake water in 1969. Water temperature records on three streams flowing into the lake indicate that from the entire drainage basin approximately 320 x 10¹º calories per day of heat may have been advected to the lake in August 1968. / Arts, Faculty of / Geography, Department of / Graduate

To understand this relationship ,it was decided to analyze the history of the incorporation of drugs into our territory, the legislation on drugs and their amendments. To understand this relationship, it will be done a course on the history of international psychiatry and some psychiatric reform, until we get to the history of our psychiatry and in our recent Brazilian Psychiatric Reform.

In the shadow of the night : the gendered subtext of Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles

Hoosain, Shakira 08 December 2011 (has links)
Anne Rice writes popular fiction. She is best known for her iconic Vampire Chronicles series. This thesis focuses on the first three volumes of this series: Interview with the Vampire (1976), The Vampire Lestat (1985), and The Queen of the Damned (1988). The main objective of this thesis is to show that whilst Rice's novels often seem very liberal, an examination of her subtext reveals a conservative message. This message helps entrench socio-cultural and political hegemonies because it does not challenge the status quo. In order to see how these conservative leanings are entrenched by Rice, this thesis examines archetypes of the female and the Feminine. Louis is male, but can be viewed as a Feminine character because of his meek subservience to Lestat (the protagonist of the series). Claudia is their daughter, but she is also a woman trapped in a child's body. Claudia seems to have great intellectual freedom, but she is trapped within her body and cannot mature. Gabrielle is Lestat‟s mother. When Gabrielle becomes a vampire, Rice tries to empower Gabrielle by androgynizing her character. However, we find that this androgyny is not empowering because Gabrielle returns to her role as a mother. Akasha is the ancient queen and source of vampirism. She wants to bring about a radical, gynocentric world by killing most men. But subtextually, Akasha‟s defeat represents the defeat of feminism in favour of patriarchy. Despite the seemingly liberal nature of the texts, subtextually there is a trend towards negating the power these characters carry in the text. To explore the flux between the text and the subtext, an array of post-modern reading tools and theoretical approaches have been used. The primary reading strategies include a close reading of the novels, informed by Feminist perspectives, together with other reading strategies such as, Queer Theory, Marxism, deconstruction and the role of the Fantastic. Little academic study has been devoted to Rice‟s work. Her work shows deep philosophical and artistic integrity which lends an elegance and beauty to her texts, but this is undermined by the conservative undertones of her work. / Dissertation (MA)--University of Pretoria, 2011. / English / unrestricted

Tělo, mysl a ztracená generace v dílech Hemingwaye a Fitzgeralda / Body, Mind, and the Lost Generation in Works of Hemingway and Fitzgerald

Nekvasilová, Klára January 2021 (has links)
The thesis explores the notion of physicality in selected novels of Ernest Hemingway and Francis Scott Fitzgerald, using the works of Jean Baudrillard as its theoretical base. The text seeks to uncover the significance of a human body in the novels through a detailed observation of the depicted characters, focusing mainly on the role of the body as an emblem that reflects not only its owner's individual battles, but also the transgressive processes taking place in the society. The study assumes that the works written by the authors of the Lost Generation capture the gradual onset of capitalism and consumerism, and thus they reflect the emergence of the consumer society, a social order that became Baudrillard's main subject of study. The main aim of the thesis is thence to explore the human body as a reflection of major societal changes and uncover the methods in which the characters use their bodies to define their own position in the newly arising system. Following the theoretical introduction, the analysis firstly examines fashion and demonstrates its capability to either unify the members of the consumer society through their shared desire to follow specific trends, or alternatively hierarchically divide the consumers based on their dissimilar approaches to consumption. Secondly, the thesis...
