The subject of this work is the study of the relationship between the arts of the dance and the theater through two masterpieces of the Contemporary Dance of the 80’s. These two works inaugurated and formulated two new forms of dance presentation: the German Dance Theater, here represented by Pina Bausch, and the French New Dance, represented by Maguy Marin. Bausch is one of the best known choreographers of the Tanztheater throughout the world and her work will be also viewed in its relation to the brechtian Epic Theater, as well as for the textual and cenographic assimilations which can be largely perceived in the chosen piece 1980, Ein Stück von Pina Bausch. Maguy Marin is one of the first choreographers of the New Dance french generation, and she contributes for this research through her masterpiece May B, in which she works under the influence of the Theater of Absurd envisioned by Samuel Beckett. Both pieces efficiently illustrates the appropriation of theatrical elements by Contemporary Dance, since then. After tracing a brief historical development of the Modern Dance we intend to proceed in the recognition and comparison between both creative processes and its results in the mentioned pieces, as a way to illuminate the presence of theatrical elements in the work of these two choreographers. More than help us to think the relations between the arts of dance and theater, their works also stand as a source for the choreographic analysis. Furthermore, they favor the study of the origins of Modern Dance, as well as the Modern Theater to enlighten our understanding of its motivations and transformations that affected their recent history.
