Ortiz, Daniela Alejandra 02 October 2021 (has links)
The objective of this research was to study the degradability kinetics of the fibrous
fraction of different forages in ruminal environments with increasing corn grain diet
content, and the impact of addition sodium bicarbonate as a ruminal buffer. Two
experiments were carried out. Experiment 1 explored the degradability of the
fibrous fractions (all grain removed) of three types of silage : corn silage (CS), grain
sorghum silage (SSG), and forage sorghum silage (SSF), weeping love grass
forage (WL) and 98%-purity cellulose (CEL). Ruminal environments were
generated by adding 0, 30 and 60 % of corn grain (CG) to the diet (0CG, 30CG
and 60CG, respectively). Three ruminal fistulated cows were used in this
experiment. Treatments were tested in a 5x3 factorial (5 materials x 3 ruminal
environments), on a latin square design (3x3). Experiment 2 explored the
degradability of the fibrous fractions (without grain) of corn plant (CP), grain
sorghum plant (SG) and forage sorghum plant (SF), weeping love grass forage
(WL) and 98% pure cellulose (CEL). Ruminal environments were the result of the
combination of corn grain (CG) and sodium bicarbonate (SB) addition to the diets.
Four treatments were generated: T1 = 0CG, T2 = 0CG+SB, T3 = 60CG and T4 =
60CG+SB. Four ruminal fistulated cows were used in this experiment. Treatments
were tested in a 5x4 factorial (5 materials x 4 ruminal environments), on a latin
square design (4x4). In both experiments, the ruminal environment was described
by ruminal pH and the ammonia content (N-NH3). The in-situ DM degradability
(DgDM) of the different fibrous materials was determined. Contents of NDF, ADF
and CP from the fiberous materials degradation were determined before and after
ruminal through wet chemistry and NIRS. Specific NIRS calibrations were
previously developed for this purpose. In Experiment 1, the addition of corn grain
(CG) to the diet decreased pH and ammonia concentration, and this effect was
greater as the proportion of GM in the diet increased. This increased decreased
DgMS. In contrast to 60CG diets, the 0CG and 30CG diets were able to provide a
ruminal environment well fitted for degrading structural carbohydrates, which
resulted in greater ruminal degradability of the NDF and ADF fractions. The use of
structural carbohydrates (cellulose and hemicellulose, mainly) from the fibrous
fractions from corn and sorghum silages (without grain) would always be greater
than those from weeping grass. When cellulose was fully available for degradation
(CEL), it was not affected by inclusions of 30% of GM in the diet, while the addition
of 60% of GM did affect the degradation of the polysaccharide, especially in the
hours of 48 hours of incubation. The cell wall structure of the fibrous materials
evaluated, affects the degradation of cellulose because a higher content of lignified
cellulose could be presented in PLL, compared to cellulose that could be found in
SPM, SSG and SSF or totally available in CEL. It is also possible that the rumen
environment that limits fiber degradability is not the same for each type of forage,
that is, the microflora could adapt to the conditions imposed by the diet and thus
modify the pH limits that cause negative effects. In Experiment 2, the addition of
sodium bicarbonate (SB) did not affect the ruminal pH or ammonia concentration.
No differences were detected for DgMS, or on the ruminal degradability of the NDF
(DNDF), ADF (DADF) or CP (DCP) fractions. However, in the 48-hour incubation,
the addition of BS caused the degradability of CEL in the 60GM + BS diet to
present values similar to those of 0GM and 0GM+BS diets. This strengthen the
idea that in order to improve the use of the fibrous fraction in high energy density
diets, the availability of the potentially digestible fraction (cellulose and
hemicellulose) should be increased. This can be achieved through the use of
higher quality fiber sources or chemical or enzymatic treatment on the fibers. The
addition of SB could be more effective when the proportion of concentrate was
higher than that used in the present study, or also when the concentrate of the diet
was a more rapidly fermentable starch, or was supplied for longer periods of time.
It is also observed that the addition of SB would be more effective the more
available the structural carbohydrates are in the fibrous matrices. Finally, NIRS
technology showed great potential for predicting the chemical composition of
degraded residues at the ruminal level of the fibrous materials studied in
Experiments 1 and 2 and could be used in routine analysis. However, for FDN and
FDA, the inclusion of a greater number of samples with spectral variability in the
calibration sets could significantly improve the models.

However, for grazing cattle, an additional energy supply to high fiber forages could modify the rumen environment and therefore the digestion dynamics of the basal diet. Although supplementation practice is usual in beef and dairy cattle systems in our country, the fibrous fraction of the diet provides a substantial proportion of the total absorbed nutrients. Then, it is essential to sustain fiber digestion rate and its digestibility at the highest possible levels. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a moderate energy supplementation upon the use of a fiber-based diet in grazing beef cattle. Three experiments were carried out during which the animals were fed based on direct grazing of different forages and at different times of the year. Thus, pastures and grazing periods for each experiment were: Experiment I: Avena sativa (VA, 26,2% CP, 44,9% NDF, 17,0% DM), on May; Experiment II: Panicum virgatum deferred (PVD, 2,3% CP, 81,7% NDF, 85,2% DM), on July; Experiment III: Digitaria eriantha (DI, 9,6% CP, 70,7% NDF, 32,5% DM) on the second half of November. Three Hereford steers fitted with rumen cannulas in a 3x3 Latin square design were used for each experiment. These animals received cracked corn grain as the energy supplement, fed at 0% (T1), 0.5% (T2) and 1% (T3) of BW as DM. The treatments and animals were the same in each experiment. Each period was 10 days, composed of 7 days of habit and 3 days of sampling. In situ studies were used to measure the degradability of DM, NDF and CP of the pasture of the corresponding treatment, as well as other incubated substrates: alfalfa hay (AH), weeping lovegrass (PLL) and cellulose (CEL). The pH, N-NH3 and VFA in ruminal fluid were also determined. In Experiment I, the effect of the supplement was not significant on the effective degradability of any of the incubated substrates at any level of grain supply. In Experiment II a strong negative impact of corn supply was observed for the forage of the lowest nutritional quality. For T3 fiber degradability of PVD was decreased by 60%, although the effect was also relevant for T2 with a 30% reduction. In experiment III the reduction in fiber degradability was significant (20%) for HA y DI at the highest supplementation level. The ruminal pH was significantly reduced with the addition of grain in the three grazing situations, the greatest impact was observed on the Experiment II. The ruminal NH3-N concentration decreased significantly in T2 and T3 when steers were grazing VA, declined slightly in T2 grazing DI, and increased in T2 and T3 grazing PVD (P<0.05). Total VFA did not change when grazing VA; however, VFA molar proportions in T3, increasing propionic acid, decreasing acetic acid, therefore decreasing the acetate: propionate ratio (A: P, P<0.05). When PVD was the basal diet, total VFA were significantly increased in T2 and T3 compared with T1. The proportion of acetic acid significantly decreased in T2 and T3 and dropped the A: P ratio. For DI total VFA content was also increased and the molar proportions affected, the ratio A: P was reduced in T3. Nutrient supply varied because of the different quality of the basal diet and interaction with supplement. Thus, these results indicate that for forages of low nutritional value the effect of energy supplementation results in a substantial decrease of fiber degradation.

Three trials were conducted with the objective to determine 1) the best dose and type of inoculant, homo or hetero fermentative, for reconstituted corn grain silages; 2) the effects of storage time and the use of inoculant on the fermentation profile, aerobic stability and in situ degradability of high moisture and reconstituted corn grain silages; 3) changes in ruminal fermentation, digestibility and performance of Nellore steers fed diets containing dry ground corn or high moisture or reconstituted corn grain silages without and with inoculant. In trial 1, treatments were: reconstituted corn grain silages without inoculant (C), L. plantarum + P. acidilactici (LPPA) and L. buchneri (LB), both at doses of 1 × 105, 5 × 105 or 1 × 106 cfu/g, stored for 124 days. Silages inoculated with LB compared to C had greater (P < 0.01) count or lactic acid bacterial (LAB), acetic acid, proprionic acid and 1,2-propanediol concentrations and lower (P < 0.01) pH, yeasts and molds for 12 days of exposure to air and higher (P < 0.01) aerobic stability, this occurs already at the first dose (1 x 105 cfu/g). The use of LB also increased (P < 0.05) proteolysis and in situ degradability of silages. The LPPA showed no improvements in fermentation and increased mold counts during the aerobic stability. The trial 2 was designed in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement: two types of silage, high moisture corn (HMC) or reconstituted corn grain silages (RCS); and without (control) or with L. buchneri (LB; 1 × 105). Silos were opened after 15, 30, 60, 90, 120, 180, 240 and 300 days of storage. The RCS showed higher overall concentration of acids, while silages inoculated with LB had greater concentrations of acetic acid and 1,2-propanediol and lower content of lactic and butyric acids. Along the storage time, HMC LB and RCS LB showed lower yeast count and higher BAL count and aerobic stability. The RCS with original particle size showed higher in situ degradability than HMC. The minimum length of storage to reach high degradability of gains is between 30 and 70 days of storage. In trial 3 were evaluated five diets: high moisture corn (HMC), HMC with L. buchneri (HMCLB), reconstituted corn grain silages (RCS), RCS with L. buchneri (RCSLB) and dry ground corn (DGC). We used 10 cannulated bulls in a metabolism experiment, assigned in two latin squares (5 × 5), and 180 Nellore bullocks (310±17 kg) in the performance experiment, with 6 animals per pen and 6 pens per treatment. Animals fed silages had higher (P < 0.05) DM, OM and CP digestibility, greater concentrations of propionato and total short-chain fatty acids, and lower (P < 0.01) DMI, rumen pH and higher (P < 0.01) feed efficiency, NEm and NEg for the diet for the animals consuming DGC. The use of L. buchneri increases aerobic stability and storage time increases the degradability of silages. It is recommended the use of corn grain silages by providing better digestibility and utilization of diet. Reconstituted corn grain silages is an alternative to the high moisture corn silage. / FAPESP: 2013/16720-2
