Community attitudes toward mental health in Delaware County

Carrico, Michael J. January 1975 (has links)
This thesis has examined community attitudes toward mental health in Delaware County. The paper also focused upon the community's awareness of, and attitudes toward the Delaware County Child Guidance Clinic. The method employed in this study was survey research. The findings suggested that the attitudes of the sample population concerning the area of mental health were positive. The findings also indicated that generally the respondents were reluctant to suggest professional assistance for problems of mental or emotional health. While the majority of respondents were aware that the Child Guidance Clinic existed, most of the sample were unfamiliar, with specific services which the facility provides. Further, the findings indicated that the individual's level of education was significantly related to that individual's general attitude toward mental health and his awareness of the Child Guidance Clinic. In summary, the results of this study indicated a public whose attitude was positive concerning the area of mental health but who is uninformed about the local facilities provided for the treatment of such disorders. Programs designed to provide public education in this area would be of great assistance.

Electrical resistivity methods in the unconsolidated glacial sediments of Delaware County, Indiana

May, Suzette Kimball 03 June 2011 (has links)
Delaware County, Indiana, is characterized by its glacial sediments and topography. With increasing development, the need for reliable, cost-effective subsurface surveying methods becomes more important. This thesis explores the possibilities of electrical resistivity methodology. Fifty survey sites were established on a one-mile grid over twenty square miles west of Muncie, Indiana. Three electrode arrays were tested, Wenner, Lee Partitioning, and Schlumberger, and the data interpreted by three methods, logarithmic curve matching, Moore's cumulative method, and Barnes' layer method. No one method proved to be completely accurate and reliable. Used in conjunction, however, data from the three are consistent and the techniques are viable measures for the analysis of heterogeneous glacial sediments. Additionally, apparent resistivity values which characterize the particular sediments in the study area were established and several pervasive stratigraphic units were defined.Ball State UniversityMuncie, IN 57406

Analysis for certain selected trace inorganic ions in York-Prairie Creek Pond

Mapetla, Shadrack K. January 1980 (has links)
As a result of rapid growth in technology, efforts to remove pollutants from the natural environment have not been able to keep pace with the increasing amount of waste materials and a growing population that further aggravates the situation. This has resulted in the transformation of lakes and ponds into pollution depots. A pilot study for monitoring certain selected trace elements entering and leaving YorkPrairie Creek Pond, situated inside the campus of Ball State University, was undertaken with the view to establishing whether or not this pond has been polluted, like many lakes and ponds, by metal corrosion, engine exhaust gases, and runoff from fertilizers and streets. This investigation involved sampling pond waters at two sites, viz., Influx surface and Effluent surface. Samples were collected once daily at the same time over a total time period of 23 days. Each sample was analyzed, in duplicate, for the heavy metal cations iron, lead, and cadmium, and for the inorganic anions nitrate, orthophosphate, and chloride. Metals were analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry (A. A. S.), while titrimetric and cotorimetric procedures were utilized for the anion analyses. Results have indicated that iron and chloride are the most abundant of all analytes. Precipitation tends to Increase concentrations of analytes in general, possibly due to increased runoff and the lowering of the pH of these waters; leading to increased elemental release into solution. The relative responses of the analyzed ion levels in pond influx and effluent waters have been shown to be similar although their levels were significantly different.Analyte levels were found to be generally higher in effluent than in Influx waters; only chloride was found to depart from this general behavior. This finding led to the conclusion that the selected Ions, with the exception of chloride, tend not to accumulate in the waters of the pond but rather to escape with its effluent. This conclusion is subject to modification by future researchers, to whom the author has recommended a more expanded sampling program that would include the surface and sediment of the pond's interior since the nature of the results (especially for Pb and Cd) would seem to indicate not only that the pond does not exhibit thorough mixing of its constituents (homogeneity) but also the presence of an active remobilization process within its interior.

Climatic conditions and storm hydrology of a small agricultural watershed

Edelstein, Christopher January 2005 (has links)
Climatic conditions (precipitation, evapotranspiration, available soil moisture, and temperature) are important variables when considering cumulative storm streamflow for a watershed. The objective of this study was to determine what climatic conditions, if any, could be used to mathematically model cumulative storm streamflow for an extensively-drained small agricultural watershed in northwest Delaware County, Indiana. A water-level recorder was installed in Killbuck Creek during autumn 2002, spring, summer, and autumn 2003 and 2004. To determine discharge, velocity measurements were collected following US Geological Survey (USGS) methods and two rating curves (high and low flow) were constructed. Simple linear regressions were performed using cumulative streamflow as the dependent variable and precipitation, evapotranspiration, available soil moisture, temperature, and runoff as independent variables. Multiple linear regressions were used to examine combinations of the independent variables. Cumulative streamflow was most related to precipitation (r2 = 0.23 and p < 0.001) and least related to temperature (r2 = 0.03 and p < 0.5). The multiple linear regression from the combination of precipitation, runoff, and temperature provided the most accurate cumulative streamflow simulation (R2 = 0.53 and p < 0.001). Multiple linear regressions using climatic variables can be used to estimate cumulative streamflow for an agricultural watershed. / Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management

Diatoms as indicators of stream water quality in east central Indiana

Crutcher, Candice M. January 2003 (has links)
Three streams with watersheds of different land uses (urban, agricultural, and forested) were chosen for this study. A composite sample of diatoms was obtained from small rocks in a riffle of each stream and identified to genera. Water chemistry measurements included chloride, sulfate, nitrate, conductivity, pH, alkalinity and temperature.Conductivity, chloride, and sulfate were significantly higher in the urban watershed and lowest in the forested watershed. However, the forested watershed had the highest levels of nitrate, which may have come from groundwater or organic matter decomposition. Alkalinity, pH andtemperature did not vary among watersheds.Diatom diversity was significantly higher in the forested watershed. Several diatom genera, Amphora, Cymbella and Gyrosigma, were positively correlated with nitrate and negatively correlated with conductivity, chloride and sulfate, which indicate their potential use as indicators of water quality. / Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management

Conservation and maintenance of bronze and marble outdoor sculpture in Delaware County, Indiana

Harrison, Heather R. January 1999 (has links)
Sculptural works in an outdoor environment undergo different types of deterioration, depending upon their media and the environment in which they are placed. Sculptural monuments in an outdoor environment will eventually deteriorate and fail. Without proper care and the recognition of factors leading to their degradation, these sculptures will surely be lost.Delaware County retains twenty-four existing bronze and marble outdoor sculptures, many of which suffer from slight to extreme deterioration of their materials. Through research of the media, causes of deterioration, and available conservation treatments, this project strives to provide viable recommendations for prolonging the lives of these sculptures in Delaware County.Case studies of four pieces were prepared by the author, complete with photographs and surface maps that explain the type and location of deterioration present. These pieces were chosen as representative of the media surveyed. / Department of Architecture

Transportation enhancements : a creative interpretation to the proposed widening of State Route 67 south

Lambert, Sam R. January 1997 (has links)
Transportation corridors are designed to transfer motorists from one area to another in the safest and most efficient way possible. Unfortunately, in Indiana scenic and environmental enhancements, often, were not a priority in the past. The main problem, therefore, is that travelers of most Indiana highways have been deprived of inspiring scenic opportunities and cultural enlightenment, thus there is a need to educate those involved in the design and implementation process to take heed of the advantages these enhancements and amenities can provide. This study examines the SR 67 South transportation corridor from 1-69 at Daleville, Indiana, to Delaware CR 500 South, and proposes an overall transportation corridor concept that could be implemented. This study, also, investigates current Indiana Department of Transportation policies and practices involving scenic and environmental enhancements in transportation corridors, while specifically evaluating the department's assessment of the suggestions offered in "The Gateways of Delaware County" study (in which SR 67 was incorporated). In the end, this study provides significant insight into the "posture" of those directly involved in the design and implementation process of transportation corridors; however, augmenting that posture to the advantages and importance of scenic and environmental enhancements will remain a struggle, especially during these economically challenging times. One added subplot; How can the landscape architect provide guidance to bring new understanding to those persons involved in highway design which results in improved scenic and cultural opportunities to SR 67? / Department of Landscape Architecture

Gränsöverskridande fusioner : Hur stor betydelse kommer det tionde bolagsdirektivet att kunna få? / Cross-border mergers : How significant will the tenth company law directive of cross-border mergers be?

Malinger, Kristina January 2006 (has links)
