This work aim has been to study the effect of different recast and cooling processes in microstructure and in mechanical and electrochemical properties of two Ni-Cr-Mo alloys, Wiron 99 and Wironia, used in fixed dental prostheses. The alloys as-received (as-cast) have been recast in an open flame (oxy-LPG torch) and through induction in high frequency furnace by using different cooling rates. Microstructures revealed through as-cast (AC) electrochemical attack analyzed through light and scanning electronic microscopy present dendritic character; recast samples present two phases: a Ni-Cr-Mo solid solution and precipitates. Precipitates region has Mo content greater than the main phase. Wironia samples recast through open flame (TSC - Torch followed by slow cooling), recast through induction followed by cooling in cold water (IRC - Induction followed by rapid cooling) and then by natural cooling (ISC - Induction followed by slow cooling) present a precipitate number greater than Wiron 99. Electrochemical study has been carried out in 0.9% NaCl, pH 6 at 37°C, by using open circuit potential techniques, potentiodynamic polarization and cyclic voltammetry. Different recast procedures change electrochemical parameters as stabilizing potential in open circuit, current density and passivation interval. Changes have been more markedly for ISC Wironia and ISC Wiron 99. Immersion tests during one year in NaCl 0.9% have displayed Ni, Cr and Mo dissolution in major quantity for TSC and IRC Wironia. Hardness and abrasion resistance have been smaller for recast than in AC alloys. Different recast and cooling procedures affect microstructure and corrosion resistance of these alloys.
