Revisiting Observed Changes in Cloud Properties over Europe

The Earth’s atmosphere is a vulnerable system which is easily changed by micro- and macrophysical variations. Big decreases in pollution levels of sulfur dioxide over Central Europe from 1980s to 2000s led to decreased mass concentration of atmospheric solid and liquid particles. This gives the opportunity to investigate how these particles influence the atmosphere. Newly released satellite climatology data was used to analyze statistics of cloud properties during four years in the high polluted atmosphere (1985-88) and four years in the less polluted atmosphere (2004-07). These two periods were investigated in collaboration with Atmospheric Remote Sensing Unit of the research department of the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute (SMHI). Cloud top temperature of liquid clouds over polluted regions during the earlier period was colder by more than 2 K and more than 5 K for only optical thin liquid clouds. The changes in mass concentrations of atmospheric particles derived by the sulfur dioxide emissions are shown to be a highly possible factor to the observed cloud changes. / Jordens atmosfär är ett känsligt system som lätt förändras av mikro- samt makrofysikaliska variationer. Stora minskningar i föroreningsnivåer av svaveldioxid över centrala Europa från 1980 till 2000-talet ledde till minskade masskoncentrationer av fasta och flytande atmosfäriska partiklar. Detta ger en möjlighet att undersöka hur dessa partiklar påverkar atmosfären. Nyligen utvecklad klimatologisk satellitdata användes för att analysera statistik av molnegenskaper under fyra år i en högt förorenad atmosfär (1985-88) och fyra år i en mindre förorenad atmosfär (2004-07). De två perioderna undersöktes i samarbete med Enheten för atmosfärisk fjärranalys av forskningsavdelningen till Sveriges meteorologiska och hydrologiska institut (SMHI). Molntopptemperaturen för moln i vätskefas över förorenande områden under den tidigare perioden var mer än 2 K kallare och mer än 5 K kallare för endast optiskt tunna moln i vätskefas. Förändringarna i masskoncentrationer för atmosfäriska partiklar och droppar med svaveldioxidusläpp som ursprung visas vara högst möjliga att ligga bakom de observerade molnförändringarna.

Evaluating the Efficacy of Using PEAK Relational Training System to Produce Derived Relational Responding to Planets, Sports Teams, and Holidays in Children with Autism

Autism is a neurological disorder which impairs the individual's social interactions and communication. Such impairments lead to deficits in learning which accumulate over time. Finding effective and efficient technologies to teach children with autism helps to minimize deficits and teach children new skills to be independent learners. There is previous research on technologies such as discrete trail training (DTT), antecedent based interventions, and consequence based interventions which have to be shown to be effective, however, more research is needed to find more cost effective and efficient procedures.. The PEAK Stimulus Equivalence Training Module seeks to teach children with Autism in a concise easy to follow manual. Past research has shown stimulus equivalence to not only effectively teach children with autism novel skills, but also has shown the emergence of untrained relations. The present study uses the PEAK module with three boys with autism, between the ages of 6 and 8, to teach novel stimuli including, planets, holidays, and sports teams and to test for the emergence of untrained relations. Results showed that the all participants demonstrated derived relations. Implications for future research are discussed.

Stimulus Equivalence and the Emergence of Topography Based Driving Behaviors on a Vehicle Simulator Task

This investigation assessed the utility of a selection-based instructional program in teaching relations between driving behavior and driving stimuli in addition to the emergence of topography-based responding. A selection-based instructional program was delivered to three individuals with intellectual disabilities and/or learning disabilities in order to teach participants relations of sameness between automobile operation stimuli and driving behaviors. Participants were directly taught relations between video models of vehicle operation, road sign outlines, and textual stimuli of road signs using a selection-based instructional protocol delivered via a computer program. Following mastery of the selection-based instruction the emergence of selection-based responding on symmetrical and transitive posttest probes at the mastery level was observed for all 3 participants. Furthermore, movement on posttest generalization vehicle simulator probe was observed for one participant.

An investigation into the topical and systemic safety and efficacy of a new carbohydrate derived fulvic acid (CHD-FA) product

Humic substances are a group of ubiquitous compounds formed during the decay of plant and animal residues in the environment. These substances can be divided into humic acid, fulvic acid and humin on the basis of its solubility in water as a function of pH. Fulvic acid is the fraction that is soluble in water under all pH conditions and is usually extracted from brown coal and is therefore associated with high levels of heavy metals. These heavy metal levels have become a point of concern and a unique method for synthesizing fulvic acid from a carbohydrate source has been subsequently developed and patented in an attempt to address this problem. The purpose of this study was therefore, to test the topical and systemic safety and efficacy of this new carbohydrate derived fulvic acid (CHD-FA) product. Initial in vitro screening using the Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method indicated that the product was active against the Staphylococcus aureus test organisms used (ATCC 12600 and P3938). Results showed that not only was it as effective as the oxacillin control, but in the case of a more virulent strain of S. aureus, the CHD-FA (3.9% w/v) proved more active. Subsequently, the ability of the product to cross full-thickness skin was ascertained using Franz-type diffusion cells fitted with 100ìm skin disks obtained from rats. At the end of a 12-hr period, results indicated that up to 20% of the CHD-FA at a pH of 2.9 was able to cross the skin barrier. Divided into 6 phases, extensive animal safety studies were conducted on the product. In phase I, toxicity and sensitivity to topical application was examined by applying the product to the ears of mice over a period of 30 days. Phase II and III was undertaken to study the long term effects (6-weeks and 6-months) of CHD-FA ingestion (150 mg/kg body mass) whilst phase IV tested the effects of CHD-FA ingestion on pregnant rats and their off-spring. Phase V was an acute toxicity study in which rats received a single oral dose of CHD-FA (150mg/kg bw) and then observed for a period of 7 days. Phase VI was a 6-week chronic study in which the animals received 100mg/kg bw daily for the duration of the experiment. Results obtained in all studies showed that CHD-FA is safe for topical as well as, oral use at the doses tested. In addition, it is safe for use during pregnancy. Finally, the in vivo anti-microbial efficacy of the CHD-FA was examined using an infected wound healing model. A pilot study indicated that the animals used should be immunocompromised and the wounds inoculated with a Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 12600) concentration of 1x1010 CFU/ml. Results from the main study showed that topical applications of the CHD-FA (pH 1.98) product at a concentration of 1.75% w/v over the 5-day period produced a wound healing pattern similar to that of the positive fuscidic acid control. In contrast, animals receiving an oral treatment of the product did not produce a pattern different from that of the water control group. In conclusion, CHD-FA has been shown to be safe and effective in treating S. aureus infections in vitro and in animal models. Theileriosis in roan antelope (Hippotragus equinus) : identification of vectors and experimental transmission using a tick-derived stabilate

Four hand-reared, naïve roan antelope 6 months of age were exposed to naturally infected pasture on a game farm in Mpumalanga where roan are known to die from theileriosis. The predominant ticks parasitising these animals at this time (during the months of January and February) were Rhipicephalus appendiculatus and R. evertsi evertsi adults. After a period of 5 weeks the animals developed signs of clinical theileriosis, characterized by anorectal lymphadenomegaly, shortly followed by pyrexia and generalised peripheral lymphadenomegaly. Around the time of pyrexia, peripheral blood smears showed severe mononuclear leukocytosis, with some leukocytes containing cytoplasmic theilerial schizonts (Koch’s bodies). This was followed by erythrocytic piroplasmaemia. Animals were treated successfully using buparvaquone. Primary hyperplasia of the local draining lymph nodes (Lnn. anorectales) of adult R. e. evertsi feeding sites indicated vector status of theileriosis for this tick species. After recovery from theileriosis, these animals were confirmed carriers of Theileria sp. (sable) by PCR and DNA probe analysis. Laboratory-bred larvae and nymphae of R. e. evertsi and R. appendiculatus respectively were fed on the ears of these roan antelope, now known to be carriers. Engorged nymphae were recovered from the roan. A cryopreserved stabilate was produced from each species, using an adapted protocol for Theileria parva tick stabilate preparation. Both stabilates were tested for infectivity in T. sp. (sable) negative (PCR analysis) roan antelope calves that were intensively hand reared under tick-free conditions. The stabilate derived from R. e. evertsi induced clinical theileriosis at doses between 5 and 60 tick equivalents per calf. The R. appendiculatus stabilate did not induce clinical disease or infection; the calves remained PCR negative throughout the trial period. The calves that survived the R. e. evertsi stabilate trial showed no clinical reaction to field exposure, in contrast to the controls and R. appendiculatus stabilate inoculated calves which all exhibited clinical theileriosis The stabilate has the potential to be used as the infection source in an infection and treatment method of immunising roan antelope against theileriosis. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN OCULAR OBSERVING RESPONSES AND RELATIONAL TRAINING PROCEDURES FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER

Current research has shown differences in eye gaze, or ocular observing responses amongst individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) compared with their typically developing counterparts, and with individuals with developmental disabilities other than autism. Eye gaze is currently studied as a predictor for ASD diagnoses and as a potential predictive level of social deficit for individuals already diagnosed with autism. Deficits in language and communication are also studied as predictive risk factors for ASD, and are identified as areas for treatment for individuals with autism. As a behavior analytic account of language, Relational Frame Theory (RFT) suggests that language development is attributed to the development of derived relational responding repertoires. A growing body of literature suggests that there is great benefit in behavior analytic treatment methods for autism that incorporate procedures rooted in RFT. Specifically, relational training procedures that promote derived relational responding (DRR) have been shown to improve language repertoires for children with autism. Previous research using typically developing adults has also suggested that accuracy in eye gaze on relational tasks improves as individuals demonstrate the emergence of novel derived relations. By combining the benefits of relational training procedures on outcomes of language development with technology used to understand eye gaze behaviors, behavior analysts may be able to better understand how to target specific behaviors in treatment that may indirectly improve eye gaze. In turn, improvements in eye gaze may assist in increasing socially significant and helpful behaviors such as attending to appropriate social stimuli within the environment. The current series of studies investigated the relationship between DRR repertoires and ocular observing responses in individuals with autism. Study 1 examined the relationship between DRR of equivalence relations with latency to respond to task items, as well as eye fixation duration and fixation rate toward correct stimuli in the assessment. The results from this study showed a strong, positive correlation between fixation rate and duration with assessment scores. These results suggest more advanced DRR repertoires lead to longer and more frequent eye gaze toward correct stimuli. Study 2 investigated changes in latency to respond as well as changes rate and duration of eye fixations as participants were taught novel relations and tested for the emergence of derived responding. All four participants in the study demonstrated an increase in fixation to correct stimuli from baseline to treatment. Study 3 sought to evaluate the impact that relational training techniques have on eye gaze following a 6-week intervention period compared to a more traditional treatment technique and a waitlist control. Eye gaze measures were assessed before and after the intervention using three different categories of videos of social situations: Person Telling a Story, Conversations, and Social Imaginative Play. Results suggested that the relational training procedure had the most significant impact on eye gaze for Conversation videos compared to a direct contingency group and a waitlist control group. Taken together, the results suggest the potential impact that RFT-based treatments have on ocular observing responses for children with ASD, and how improvements may benefit appropriate eye gaze toward a social environment.
