Ventilation par mélange utilisant des dispositifs de diffusion munis d’inserts lobés : analyse des écoulements moteurs et du confort thermique induit / Mixing ventilation using air diffusion devices equipped with lobed inserts : airflow pattern and induced thermal comfort analysis

Bragança, Pierre 05 October 2017 (has links)
This thesis deals with high-induction mixing ventilation for buildings using innovative air diffusers equipped with vortex promoters. These are lobed inserts, introduced into commercial air diffusers, without modifying the manufacturing process. The innovation was born from previous work and has recently been the subject of an European patent. The first objective of the present work is to conduct full scale experiments under typical heating and air conditioning conditions. By an experimental approach, the impact of the lobed inserts on the airflow and jet pattern, on the thermal comfort induced in the occupied zone of a thermally guarded climate chamber, and on the pressure drop and the noise generation. Airflow pattern is analyzed by large scale PIV 2D2C, and thermal comfort is evaluated in the occupied zone using a set of temperature and speed sensors and Fanger's PMV / PPD model. The results show that the lobed inserts introduced into the diffusers enhance the mixing between the jet and ambient air whose to be treated. The thermal comfort in the occupied zone is significantly improved, compared to the reference case of the same diffuser without inserts. The impact of the inserts on the acoustics and the pressure drop is not significant, which validates the innovation for its immediate application in buildings. Finally, we compared the performance of innovative diffusers with lobed inserts to the vortex diffuser, presented in the air diffusion market as a high mixing diffuser, because of the rotation generated by profiled fins. The results showed that when the diffuser is flush mounted to the ceiling, which is recommended by the manufacturer, the immediate attachment of the jet due to the Coanda effect inhibits the expected rotational movement. Its performance under these conditions is lower to that of the diffuser with lobed inserts. It follows from this finding that the installation of the vortex diffuser on a free pipe is necessary for its best performance ; this can be performed for high ceiling commercial buildings or industrial buildings. Ceiling flush mounted diffusers with lobed inserts, which we have demonstrated their performance, are perfectly suited for office spaces or homes with low ceiling heights, and therefore meet the real need for high induction in this type of buildings.

The governing equations, written in cylindrical coordinates, are solved using a numerical code based on the Finite Volume Method. The Immersed Boundary Method, with the Virtual Physical Method, was implemented in the numerical code and used to represent the solid region immersed in the flow. Initially, the numerical code was used to solve the flow around a square base cylinder, as part of the code validation. The comparison of the numerical results with literature data indicated the partial validation of the code. Afterwards it was performed a preliminary study of the behavior of the flow solution in the radial diffuser relating to several geometrical and numerical parameters, with the objective of identifying a configuration capable of providing, simultaneously, satisfactory results with the smaller computational cost. Using this configuration, the numerical code was validated through the comparison with experimental pressure distribution on the frontal disk (reed) for two gaps between the frontal disk and inferior disk (seat), s=0.020 and 0.025 cm, and Reynolds numbers varying between 1500 and 2500. These comparisons have shown that the implemented methodology is suitable to study this problem. Finally, the inferior disk geometry was modified by inserting a chamfer with three inclination angles (30, 45 e 60º), with the objective of evaluating its influence on the pressure distribution on the frontal disk. The decreasing of the total pressure gradient through the flow for increasing inclination angles indicates less amount of energy to drive the flow. This is an important result that can be used to design refrigeration compressors with lower compression power

The submarine outfalls are the preferred solution for discharging treated domestic wastewaters due to the ocean’s assimilative capacity, as a cheaper option. If the exit systems to the sea are chosen, location is key to avoid the return of the wastewaters to the coastal area and for the marine ecosystem restoration. According to the effluent discharge control regulations dictated by the National Water Authority (Autoridad Nacional del Agua, ANA) of the Republic of Peru, the bacteria concentration level must be under a certain level in the protected area. This thesis is based on the applied research methodology, since there is not much scientific information available regarding submarine outfalls in Peru. For this reason, this research seeks to increase the scientific information so that the next projects involving submarine outfalls are more efficient in hydraulically. In the other hand, the main effects impacting dilution are coastal currents generated by the wind and the wastewaters flow into open coastal regions, as found in La Chira. The dispersion model predictions are accurate if they have the physical characteristics of the submarine outfall, the effluent and the ocean, since they provide a clear perspective for the submarine outfall planning. In this study, we compared the design flow rate with the geometric increase method recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) with the real flow rate of the project, and it was verified that both flow rates are similar. Also, the submarine outfall hydraulic capacity was verified to identify the losses of total loads produced throughout the outfall. Furthermore, the Visual Plumes, a software that generates dispersion models of effluents in body of water, was used for the near-field and far-field dilutions of the contaminant. The results of near-field and far-field dilutions model show that the submarine outfall of La Chira meets the legal environmental regulations. / Tesis

[EN] Control of environmental noise is a major concern for advanced societies because of the resulting problems for citizens' health. One of the most widespread solutions for controlling noise in its transmission phase is the use of acoustic screens. The emergence of new materials made up of arrays of isolated acoustic scatterers, called sonic crystals, is revolutionizing the field of acoustic screening. In recent years, acoustic screens based on sonic crystals have positioned themselves as a viable alternative to traditional acoustic screens, as they offer multiple advantages over current traditional solutions. This Doctoral dissertation compiles the advances in the field of acoustic screening using this type of sonic crystals. However, there is still active research in this area which needs to be addressed and studied in order to apply this technology as noise reduction devices in transport infrastructures. Therefore, during the PhD student's training period, we have researched the acoustic phenomena produced by isolated scatterers in order to better understand the physical phenomena behind the lasts designs of this type of screen. One of these researches led to the discovery of interferences between the effects of resonance and multiple scattering of sonic crystals when occurring in nearby frequency ranges. Also we have designed a new noise reduction device based on sonic crystals, using multi-objective optimization tools, which would block and diffuse the noise. This new designing tool identified the need for a comparative study of the most commonly used simulation methods to estimate the performance of devices based on sonic crystals. Finally, we have carried out a psychoacoustic study that determined the perception of the annoyance reduction provided by acoustic screens based on sonic crystals and traditional barriers, determining whether the objective parameters that evaluate their performance match to the subjective response of the users.
