Dirty Work - Ett jobb som alla andra? : Att arbeta på ett företag inom alkoholbranschen / Dirty Work - Just a regular job? : To work at a company within the alcohol business

Grapne, Marcus, Hagström, Mattias January 2014 (has links)

The epidemiology of Brachyspira species in Ontario layer chicken flocks

Asmelash Medhanie, Genet 04 January 2012 (has links)
Avian intestinal spirochetosis is a disease of poultry caused by the spirochete bacterium Brachyspira, and is characterized by increased mortality, reduced egg production, weight loss, diarrhoea, and fecal staining of egg shells, which leads to downgrading of eggs. The presence of Brachyspira species in Ontario layer chicken flocks and its association with downgrades for dirty eggs was explored. Further, farm interviews were conducted to determine risk factors associated with the presence of Brachyspira species. The prevalence of Brachyspira species was significantly higher in flocks with a higher proportion of dirty eggs (dirty flocks) compared to those with a lower proportion of dirty eggs (clean flocks). Brachyspira pilosicoli was the only pathogenic species detected. Risk factors associated with the presence of Brachyspira species were flock age, barn age, multi-age farms, and housing type. Based on these findings, recommendations were suggested to control the occurrence of Brachyspira species and the associated dirty egg problem. / Animal Health Laboratory

They look at it as dirty: Components of female exotic dancers 'dirty work' stigma

Chalkley, Katherine Marie 29 August 2005 (has links)
The present study explored the stigmatization experiences of dirty workers in one dirty work job-female exotic dancers-in an effort to understand the components of dirty work stigma. The framework presented here is based on the integration of existing theory regarding the components of stigma and dirty work. Grounded theory was used to guide the collection and analysis of interviews from 18 participants. Five dirty work stigma components were identified in the participant accounts (i.e., awareness of negative perceptions, type of stigma, visibility, controllability, and type of taint). These components were centrally organized around the moral taint of the dirty work job of exotic dancing.

Interference Channel with State Information

Zhang, Lili 2012 August 1900 (has links)
In this dissertation, we study the state-dependent two-user interference channel, where the state information is non-causally known at both transmitters but unknown to either of the receivers. We first propose two coding schemes for the discrete memoryless case: simultaneous encoding for the sub-messages in the first one and super-position encoding in the second one, both with rate splitting and Gel'fand-Pinsker coding. The corresponding achievable rate regions are established. Moreover, for the Gaussian case, we focus on the simultaneous encoding scheme and propose an active interference cancellation mechanism, which is a generalized dirty-paper coding technique, to partially eliminate the state effect at the receivers. The corresponding achievable rate region is then derived. We also propose several heuristic schemes for some special cases: the strong interference case, the mixed interference case, and the weak interference case. For the strong and mixed interference case, numerical results are provided to show that active interference cancellation significantly enlarges the achievable rate region. For the weak interference case, flexible power splitting instead of active interference cancellation improves the performance significantly. Moreover, we focus on the simplest symmetric case, where both direct link gains are the same with each other, and both interfering link gains are the same with each other. We apply the above coding scheme with different dirty paper coding parameters. When the state is additive and symmetric at both receivers, we study both strong and weak interference scenarios and characterize the theoretical gap between the achievable symmetric rate and the upper bound, which is shown to be less than 1/4 bit for the strong interference case and less than 3/4 bit for the weak interference case. Then we provide numerical evaluations of the achievable rates against the upper bound, which validates the theoretical analysis for both strong and weak interference scenarios. Finally, we define the generalized degrees of freedom for the symmetric Gaussian case, and compare the lower bounds against the upper bounds for both strong and weak interference cases. We also show that our achievable schemes can obtain the exact optimal values of the generalized degrees of freedom, i.e., the lower bounds meet the upper bounds for both strong and weak interference cases.

Dirty bombs : the technical aspects of radiological dispersion devices

Visger, Benjamin Felix 06 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited. / Considering the ever-rising threat of terrorist attack and disruption of the economy and of daily activity, the potential strength of a radiological dispersion device must be evaluated. A "dirty bomb" is a weapon in the terrorist arsenal that is highly effective in creating chaos, panic and disruption. All of the immediate deaths caused by a "dirty bomb" are due to blast effects, however the public association with radiation and nuclear devices is one of fear and hyperbole. The individuals and agencies that respond to this type of event will have the greatest impact on the general public. By looking at case studies and potential scenarios or exercises the first responder can appreciate the nature of radiation as well as its impact on response. The goal of this paper is to provide first responders with basic information on nuclear physics and expose relevant issues in responding to a radiological dispersion device. An understandable link between nuclear physics and radiation response does exist. / Ensign, United States Navy
