The effect of clearcut logging and forest fires on hypolimnetic oxygen depletion rates in remote Canadian Shield lakes /

St. Onge, Peter Douglas. January 2001 (has links)
Thirty-eight oligotrophic lakes located around the Reservoir Gouin in central Quebec (48°N, 75°W) were sampled over three years to test the hypothesis that forest clearcutting and fires should be reflected in both higher nutrient export rates and ultimately in greater areal hypolimnetic oxygen deficit rates (AHOD). Significant differences in estimated total phosphorus export rates across treatments were found. However, no effect of clearcutting or forest fire on hypolimnetic oxygen consumption rates could be demonstrated as the result of a much greater and confounding variation in the effect of lake morphometry and the absence of information on the role of catchment-derived organic matter on the AHOD. Consequently, only lake morphometry (hypolimnetic volume to hypolimnetic surface area ratio) served as a predictor of the AHOD. Covariation of mean hypolimnetic water temperature with morphometric variables underlines the influence of lake morphometry on heat dynamics and hypolimnetic respiration rates in these lakes. / This research made considerable use of specialized data manipulation techniques involving a relational database management system, owing to the size of the dataset used (114 lake-years of data). The specific approach used in this thesis is presented in an appendix.

The effects of dissolved oxygen and enological treatments on quality parameters in wine and cider

Ragnemalm, Johan January 2014 (has links)
Dissolved oxygen has previously been shown to affect the colour and sensory properties of red and white wine during storage. A number of different wines and wine based sparkling ciders are made at Kiviks Musteri AB. The aim of this work is to study the effects of dissolved oxygen and different enological treatments on sensory quality and colour of red wine and sparkling apple cider during storage at different temperatures. The effects of fermentation and fining on foaming ability of pear wine are also studied.   Samples of red wine were taken after different processing steps such as pumping, sulphuration, pasteurization and filling. To evaluate the effects of the processes on the wine, dissolved oxygen, colour and free SO2 were measured in each. Measurements were also made on samples of red wine stored at either 38°C or room temperature for different amounts of time. Sensory evaluations were also made of the wine samples. Colour was measured by measuring absorbance at 420, 520 and 620 nm. Dissolved oxygen was also measured after different processing steps during production of apple cider. To study the effects of dissolved oxygen on cider, three different batches of apple cider were produced, with different concentrations of dissolved oxygen. The samples were stored at either 38°C or room temperature for one week. Measurements of absorbance at 420 nm and free SO2, along with sensory evaluation were made on the cider samples before and after storage. Fermentation and fining of pear wine were made in small scale and the foaming ability was compared to that of large scale factory produced wine.   Pumping and filling had negative impact on the flavour of red wine. Colour intensity increased while free SO2 decreased during storage of red wine. The sensory quality decreased during storage and a higher storage temperature had a distinctive impact on this decrease. Dissolved oxygen had no noticeable effect on changes in sensory properties of neither red wine nor cider during storage. A higher concentration of dissolved oxygen was correlated to a higher increase in colour intensity of red wine though. A higher decrease was also seen in free SO2 in red wine samples with higher dissolved oxygen content when stored at 38°C. Fermentation had a large impact on foaming properties of pear wine. Small scale wine fermentation resulted in much lower foaming ability than large scale fermentation.

Productivity and carbon accumulation potential of transferred biofilms in reclaimed oil sands-affected wetlands

Frederick, Kurt R. 06 1900 (has links)
Biofilms are significant contributors to primary production, nutrient cycling, bio-stabilization and the food web of wetland ecosystems. Photoautotrophic biomass (PB) and primary production (PP) were determined for biofilms exposed to various treatments and materials in wetlands near Fort McMurray. Biofilm additions and oil sands process-affected materials were expected to increase the microbial colonization rates on treated substrates and subsequently PB and PP of biofilms over time as compared to controls and unaffected materials. Biofilms survived the transfers and colonized new substrates immediately. Oil sands process affected materials were found to increase PB and PP throughout the first year. A strong decreasing trend for both PB and PP in treatment microcosms occurred in year two, eventually coalescing with control conditions at a lower equilibrium. Transferred biofilms and treatment materials, therefore, increased overall wetland productivity during the initial stages of wetland development when growing conditions are most limiting. / Land Reclamation and Remediation

COEFICIENTES DE DESOXIGENAÇÃO E DE REAERAÇÃO SUPERFICIAL EM TRECHOS DO RIO VACACAÍ MIRIM / DEOXYGENATION AND REAERATION COEFFICIENTS ON VACACAÍ MIRIM RIVER REACHES

Formentini, Thiago Augusto 30 November 2010 (has links)
This dissertation presents the experimental determination of the two most important coefficients in modeling of dissolved oxygen in water bodies: the reaeration-rate coefficient K2 and the deoxygenation coefficient K1. The deoxygenation coefficient was determined in three representative sections of the considered basin: the first with urban characteristics, the second mixed and the third rural characteristics. Three experiments were conducted, featuring different flows in the Vacacaí Mirim River. K1 was determined by constructing the oxygen depletion versus time curve, in a 20 days period. K1 ranged from 0.15 day-1 to 0.27 day-1. An increase in K1 value was observed due to flow increment, in mixed and rural characteristics areas, reflecting the major contribution of diffuse organic load in those areas. It was not possible to observe a significant variation of flow in the urban feature section, due to damping of the flow by the upstream reservoir. This section is considered to present a decrease in the K1 value as liquid discharge increases, since it is noticeable the sewage contribution. The reaeration-rate coefficient was determined using inert tracer technique, applying propane as gas tracer and Rhodamine WT as dye tracer. Two experiments were conducted in two reaches, both in the highest urbanization areas of the Vacacaí Mirim basin. In the first experiment, K2 value was 30.30 day-1 for the first reach, and 24.77 day-1 for the second. In the second test, K2 obtained was 14.91 day-1 and 12.73 day-1, respectively. An approach was made about alternative methods for experimental determination of the reaeration-rate coefficient and the predictive equations of K2. The results obtained in tests were compared with those predicted by the most important equations in literature. The predictive equations presented large discrepancy between them, and the latest formulas, derived from K2 measurements obtained by the gas tracer methods, presented the lowest variation, ranging from -32.95% to 14.51%. Based on results, an equation was proposed to estimate K2 restricted to the studied sites, adapting from the equations of Melching and Flores.

Marcos Margarido Righetto 29 April 2008 (has links)
This work presents a reaeration tank development and its calibration, equipment that generates controlled intensity turbulence produced by oscillating grid. An adaptation on the original design idealized by Roma was made improving the equilibrium of the oscillating grid mechanism and defining the limits of functionality of the device. These are important aspects for future research on experimental turbulence generation since that the use of equipment free of undesirable disturbing noise are of fundamental importance. Tank calibration was obtained through the evaluation of the reaeration coefficient \'K IND.2\' using two types of oscillating grids, 256 and 1024 meshes/\'M POT.2\', constructed with 10 x 10 \'MM POT.2\' square section bars. Experimental runs were conducted under controlled conditions of air temperature and humidity, for several oscillating frequencies for each grid. The necessary water mass desaeration was obtained by ambient temperature stripping, induced by forced cavitation and nitrogen injection. Reaeration coefficients were calculated from data obtained from dissolved oxygen concentration measurements as function of time for each grid size and oscillating frequency combination. As results, reaeration curves with reaeration coefficients as function of oscillating frequency and grid type are presented.

Análise da dispersão turbulenta em aeração de corpos hídricos usando a técnica PIV (velocimetria por imagem de partículas) / Turbulent dispersion analysis in water bodies aeration using PIV (particle image velocimetry)

Andreza Bortoloti Franco de Oliveira 14 November 2008 (has links)
Problems involving natural or forced aeration are intimately bind to the reaeration of water bodies. Pollutants are oxidized to yield low toxicity conditions. One of the steps of wastewater treatment consists in dissolving oxygen in water. To perform this, aeration tanks are used where bubbling air crosses the continuous liquid flow. This research focuses on the experimental determination of turbulent viscosity values to be used in modeling of oxygen transfer from air bubbles to the bulk liquid. Such models, if realistic enough, may contribute to water resources management studies or in wastewater treatment operations. Particle image velocimetry method was used, by means of which it became possible to obtain instantaneous velocities of the fluid (water). These velocities embody the turbulent flow, which is the main responsible for oxygen transport from the surface to the bulk liquid. This surface may be either facing the atmosphere or the interior of a bubble. In practice, the method consists in correlating tracking particles suspended in the liquid, which are supposed to have the same velocity of the fluid. The successive positions that give path and speed were obtained by images took in predefined intervals by a digital camera. The laser light illuminated the particles in a predefined area with high precision, making possible to determine velocity profiles. Turbulent viscosity values were so determined and may be used in the modeling of oxygen transfer, which may contribute to water body aeration studies.

Aplicação de microssensores no monitoramento de oxigênio dissolvido, potencial REDOX e temperatura em estudos limnológicos / Application of microsensors in the monitoring of dissolved oxygen, redox potential and temperature in limnological studies

Antonio Wagner Lamon 22 August 2014 (has links)
The importance of the physicochemical and biological monitoring parameters in the environment becomes more and more evidenced when the understanding of the processes is looked at what happens in nature, whether they are from anthropic or natural actions. Among the parameters of interest in the aquatic mean monitoring, dissolved oxygen (DO) is undoubtedly, one of the fundamental items in the characterization of aquatic ecosystems, because this element is intimately linked to the breathing capacity of fish, plants and microorganisms of oxidizing substances present on that media. As well as DO, the ORP assumes an important role in aquatic monitoring, acting in the levels of oxide reduction and biochemical reactions that happen. Still, in that context, the temperature represents effective interference in the rates where chemical and biochemical reactions take place in the environment, even in the ones that concern DO and ORP. Due to the importance of these parameters for the environmental monitoring to better know the appropriate conditions and to plan solutions the present work seeks the development of amperometric electrochemistry micro electrodes for dissolved oxygen (DO) measurement Clark type, potentiometric for ORP measurement and temperature with the LM35component, as well as, compact electronic systems for reading and software for visualization and storage of data in an autonomous way, through notebook or PC. Yet, the data acquisition system foresees the application of a GPS module for data acquisition recordings of the coordinates points and a GPRS module for data transmission from cellular. The electrodes were developed based on the microsensors technology used in biofilms studies; recently introduced in Brazil and developed at the Hydraulics and Sanitation Department at School of Engineering of São Carlos at the São Paulo State University since 2007, through the support of the Montana State University USA and FAPESP. The proposed method for construction seeks production with minimized costs, it could reach 50% of the conventional systems costs for the same purpose, due to the internal components miniaturization, because as well as for macro electrodes, noble metals are used as gold, platinum and silver. The microsensors, electronic systems and software were validated through the tests carried out at the laboratory and through comparison with commercially found electrodes. In the field, they will be evaluated through acting tests in measurements carried out at the Lobo Reservoir (Itirapina SP Brazil), throughout the whole reservoir by using a small boat and the data acquisitions points were indexed to the GPS coordinate along the trajectory. Samples were collected at the main affuents of the reservoir for additional analysis, seeking identification of anthropic changes as well as the trophic level of the reservoir for Phosphorus and depth of the Secchi disk (ZDS). It was also observed the spatial distribution of phytoplankton community.

Thresholds of Hypoxia for Red Sea Corals

Alva Garcia, Jacqueline Victoria 11 1900 (has links)
Over the last four decades, coral reefs have suffered a ~50% decline of across the tropics. Consequently, most research efforts have focused on the impacts of anthropogenic pressures on corals, including ocean warming, ocean acidification, and overfishing. However, recent discoveries indicate that coral reefs are becoming increasingly vulnerable to acute deoxygenation events, which can drive severe and widespread coral bleaching, and in some cases, mortality of corals and other reef organisms. On unimpacted coral reefs, dissolved oxygen (DO) availability can vary between 50% and 200% air saturation, depending on the location, proximity to the open-ocean, and time of the day. During the daytime, Symbiodiniaceae spp. produce more O$_2$ than the coral host can consume, releasing excess O$_2$ to the surrounding tissues. However, at nighttime Symbiodiniaceae spp. cease O$_2$ production. Hence, corals may suffer to O$_2$ deprivation at nighttime when the photosynthesis ceases, and holobiont respiration consumes oxygen. To assess the O$_2$ thresholds and aftereffects of two Red Sea coral species: ${{P. lobata}}$ and ${{G. fascicularis}}$ corals were exposed to reduced DO concentrations. Coral fragments from both species were exposed to one control treatment (6.8 mg O$_2$ l$^{−1}$) and three reduced DO concentrations treatments (5.25 mg O$_2$ l$^{−1}$, 3.5 mg O$_2$ l$^{−1}$, and 1.25 mg O$_2$ l$^{−1}$). Experiments were held at a stable temperature (32°C ± 0.25) and stable pH levels (pH 8.2 ± 0.08). Corals in these experiments displayed different thresholds to low O$_2$ concentrations. ${{P. lobata}}$ coral fragments didn’t exhibit any bleaching symptoms throughout complete experiment. However, ${{G. fascicularis}}$ fragments showed signs of bleaching after the third night of exposure to the low O$_2$ treatment (1.25 mg O$_2$ l$^{−1}$). Physiological variables such as maximum and effective photochemical efficiency, Chl ${{a}}$, cell density, and dark respiration experienced the lowest values under the low O$_2$ treatment for both species. These results highlight the need for further experimental assessments of deoxygenation thresholds for corals across the globe. These assessments are of great importance to create better conservation strategies for the preservation of coral reefs.

In-Stream water quality modelling and optimisation by mixed-integer programming : simulation and application in actual system

Mahlathi, Christopher Dumisani January 2013 (has links)
Water scarcity has become a global problem due to diminishing water resource and pollution of the remaining resources. The problems arising fromwater scarcity are exacerbated rapid urbanisation and industrialisation. Water quality management systems are introduced. Numerous water management methods exist some of which, if applied e ectively, can remedy these problems. In South Africa, water management systems are urgently needed to start addressing issues around the longterm sustainability of our limited water resource. Water quality modelling is one of the tools employed to assist in validating decisions made during the planning phase of a water quality management system. It also provides a means of exploring viable options to be considered when these decisions are to be made. A range of management options exist and implementing all of them may prove costly, therefore optimisation techniques are utilised to narrow down options to the most e ective and least costly among the available choices. Commonly, water quality models are used to predict concentrations in the river from which constraint equations are generated. The constraint equations are used in optimisation models to generate feasible solutions by either maximising or minimising the objective function. In this case the objective function is wastewater treatment cost. Constraints equations are based on the set in-stream water quality standard at selected theoretical measuring stations (checkpoints) in the stream and a feasible solution is one that suggests a treatment method that will ensure water quality standards are met at the lowest regional treatment cost. This study focused on the Upper Olifants river catchment near Witbank in Mpumalanga province. This catchment is subjected to extensive wastewater e uents from various mining operations and wastewater treatment plants. The aim here was to develop a water quality model for predicting dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration in the river, and to use a modelling approach to generate constraint equations for the system. A Streeter-Phelps stream simulation model was employed to predict DO concentration in the river. A mixed-integer programming technique was then used to evaluate the impact of nine wastewater treatment facilities discharging e uent into the river. Treatment levels were varied to test model reliability. The coupled stream simulation and optimisation model produced feasible solutions under 2 minutes, with each solution suggesting a range of treatment levels which ensured that the critical DO concentration was above 5 mg/L and the most stringent DO concentration the system could manage without violations anywhere else in the stream was obtained to be 7mg/L. / Dissertation (MEng)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / gm2014 / Chemical Engineering / unrestricted
