The geotectonic evolution of a portion of the Garies terrane, Kliprand, South Africa

Magister Scientiae - MSc (Earth Science) / The Kliprand dome is a poorly investigated structure located in the central part of the high grade Garies Terrane of the western Namaqua Sector (NS) of the Namaqua-Natal Metamorphic Province (NNMP). This structure is host to a diverse variety of supracrustal rocks comprising predominantly metapelites and quartzites of the Kamiesberg Group, the streaky augen gneiss, an enigmatic pink gneiss (official name the Lekkerdrink Gneiss) of which the origin is obscure, the metasomatic charnockites along with the pre- to syn-tectonic two-pyroxene granulites (or gabbro-norite) of the Oorkraal Suite. Large bodies of garnet-quartz-feldspar granite, believed to be the products of dehydration melting during peak metamorphism, are referred to as the Ibequas Granite. The transformation of these sediments and volcanic rocks into gneisses and migmatitites was accomplished by intense regional metamorphism during the 1.2-1.0 Ga Namaqua Orogeny. In order to unravel the tectonic evolution of the Kliprand dome, a structural, lithogeochemical, isotopic and geochronological study was undertaken.

Rare Earth Elements and Yttrium in Acid Mine Drainages of the Illinois Basin

Coal has been an important natural resource of energy in the Illinois Basin for generations. In addition to the organic macerals in coal, there is inorganic matter containing minerals and trace elements. With growing demand for economic and critical metals including Rare Earth Elements and Yttrium (REY), coals containing anomalously high concentrations of trace elements, as well as their associated coal mine wastes, and drainages have been explored as promising secondary resources, but there were no former studies of REY in Illinois basin CMD. CMD samples were collected from 35 abandoned coal mine sites from three regions of the Illinois basin. Region 1 (R1) the southern extent of the basin extending west along the cottage grove fault system and includes Hicks dome, a nexus of regional hydrothermal activity and provenance of the Illinois Kentucky Fluorite District (IKFD) ore deposits; Region 2 (R2) comprised locations situated in western Illinois along the Du Quoin Monocline; and Region 3 (R3) comprised locations situated in northern Illinois, farthest from the Hicks Dome. Two hypotheses were tested in this study: (1) that pH and ΣREY would share an inverse correlation, with the greatest abundances of REY found in the most acidic drainages; and (2) hydrothermal activity associated with Hicks Dome in southern Illinois was the source of REY enrichment in the coals, and so, REY abundance and pattern would reflect proximity to the cryptoexplosive complex, with the greatest enrichments expected in R1, closest to Hicks Dome. The geochemical data of 42 CMD samples was examined was analyzed to test these two ii hypotheses. Samples ranged from extremely acidic (pH=1.93) to circumneutral (pH=7.6) with an average pH value of 3.4. Total REY values (ΣREY) averaged 1,057 μg/L across all samples and ranged from 0.4-9,879 μg/L while Σcritical-REY abundances (Nd, Eu, Tb, Dy, and Y) averaged 611 μg/L and ranged from 0.2-7,213 μg/L. Furthermore, there are significant direct correlations of ΣREY with Al, Si, SO4, Zn, Ni, Cu, Cd, Co and no correlations with Fe, Ca, P, Ba, and V. In the course of investigation, it was found that pH and linear concentration values for REY correlate poorly. However, logarithmic values of REY concentrations (i.e., log[ΣREY]), as well as the above trace metals have strong inverse correlations with pH( (r=- 0.84, p

Main idea of my project is how I can design a building for music and especially for voice - which is the natural instrument of a human body. The music college something more than the place for training music technical skills but the building by itself preform as instrument, as a platform for experimenting with different acoustic features, as a place of inspiration as well as an a performing venue. In theory music is a temporal art, and architecture – is spatial one. However music forms the spatial bounders while it` sounds in the certain space. Rhythm, harmony and movement – they are both reflected in music and architecture. Design of a school is based on integration of this principles into architecture. And I have been working at how the rethinking of musical education process can affect the shape, structure and appearance of the building for the singing.

Failure Prediction of Spatial Wood Structures: Geometric and Material Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis

The purpose of this study is to investigate spatial wood structures, trace their response on equilibrium paths, identify failure modes, and predict the ultimate load. The finite element models of this study are based on the Crafts Pavilion dome (Triax) in Raleigh, North Carolina, and the Church of the Nazarene dome (Varax) in Corvallis, Oregon. Modeling considerations include 3-d beam finite elements, transverse isotropy, torsional warping, beam-decking connectors, beam-beam connectors, geometric and material nonlinearities, and the discretization of pressure loads. The primary objective of this study is to test the hypothesis that the beam-decking connectors (B-D connectors) form the weakest link of the dome. The beam-decking connectors are represented by nonlinear springs which model the load slip behavior of nails between the beam and the decking. The secondary objective of this study is to develop models that are sufficiently simple to use in engineering practice. / Ph. D.
